Mark Ruffalo & Amanda Seyfried Up for Leterrier’s Magician Heist Flick

Louis Leterrier has been associated with a handful of tentpole projects over the past year or so, being shortlisted at one point as a director for The Avengers – not to mention, being eyed for the Fantastic Voyage remake. Earlier this year, however, the director instead signed on for Now You See Me, a heist flick that concerns a crew of illusionists with the mindset of Robin Hood (sort of).

Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) and Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) are officially onboard for Leterrier’s bank robbery thriller – and now, two well-known names look to join them.

Variety has learned that Mark Ruffalo and Amanda Seyfried are both in negotiations to join the cast of Now You See Me, which is being produced by the ever-busy duo of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Cowboys & Aliens) through their Kurtzman Orci Paper Products production company.

Now You See Me is a cat-and-mouse thriller that revolves around a team of the world’s greatest illusionists, who join forces to pull off a series of dangerous bank heists – while they perform onstage. The tricky magicians then hide their stolen funds by distributing part of it out to members of the audience.

Ruffalo is up to portray an FBI agent who is hot on the criminals’ trail. Seyfried would star as a knowledgeable technician who is responsible for designing the equipment used by the law-breaking magicians.

Jason Statham as ‘The Transporter’

Leterrier jump-started his career as a director back with the original Transporter movie in 2002, which eventually helped him to land jobs helming big-budget blockbuster titles like The Incredible Hulk and Clash of the Titans. His forte is arguably that of hyper-kinetic thrillers – not effects-driven tentpole pics – so Now You See Me sounds like a good project for Leterrier to tackle next.

Boaz Yakin (From Dusk Till Dawn 2, Prince of Persia) is co-writing the script with relative newcomer Edward Ricourt. All the same, this isn’t really a film that calls for the most innovative of screenplays – just one that sets the stage for a helmer like Leterrier to ratchet up the tension and create some exciting set pieces, while also keeping things moving in between the action sequences.

The casting so far is good, if a bit goofy, in standard Hollywood fashion (case in point: most technical experts don’t look like Seyfried). Now You See Me might not end up being the most memorable of heist flicks, but given the people working behind the scenes, it certainly has the potential to be entertaining. As always, take that for what it’s worth.

We’ll keep you posted on the status of Now You See Me as more information is released.

      • He’s just speculating, but I won’t mind seeing another Hulk movie. Hopefully the Avengers makes it more possible.

        • My comment was mostly about his strange syntax and phrasing.

  3. I love that the director of Marvel Studios’ “Incredible Hulk” is teaming up with the guy who’s now playing the part.

    • Yeah this made me think this was going to be about a Hulk movie at first.

  4. About time someone did a heist film with magicians. Soooo much potential with the angle that it amazes me this hasn’t been tried yet.

Hopefully they’ll do a scene at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. Its a fun place to go when you’re in the area but you have to be a member or with one to get in.
