Who here had Mannequin in the 80’s remake pool? What? You guys didn’t have a “Which 80’s movie will be announced next as a remake” pool going with your buddies? I’m telling you, if you don’t have one going, then I highly suggest starting one because there are sure a lot of classic 80’s films out there just ripe for the remake pickin’. Of course, you could always do shots but then half of the people that follow movie blogs would die of alcohol poisoning in just under a year.
According to our buds over at Movie Hole, they have it on good word that Gladden Entertainment – who released the original Mannequin back in 1987 – are just in the early stages of putting together a remake. This news is not entirely all groan worthy because Gladden also put out the classic 80’s gems, The Manhattan Project, Gleaming the Cube, Weekend at Bernie’s, The Fabulous Baker Boys and Mannequin 2: On the Move. So maybe that last one wasn’t so dandy but the rest are great 80’s films and since M2 was made in 1991, technically it’s not an 80’s film and therefore doesn’t count against them.
Mannequin is not without its charms, as slightly risqué 80’s rom-coms go. Jonathan Switcher (Andrew McCarthy) works in a department store and through some magic brings his mannequin to life as Emmy (Kim Cattrall) who was an Egyptian princess in 2145 BC. She immediately takes to shopping in a Manhattan department store and together she and Jonathan design some of the most unique and eye-catching window displays in town.
Soon after, the two fall in love and with the help of their lively friend Hollywood (Meshach Taylor) manage to stay one step ahead of the competition and keep their love a secret. It’s your timeless, boy builds girl, girl comes to life, boy dresses girl in different outfits, boy falls in love with girl, boy wakes up next to a fake girl made of wood. If I had a nickel for every time that has happened to me, I’d have a sock full of nickels.
Gladden Entertainment is now in search of a writer to turn this rehashed idea into cinematic gold and my guess it will star some teens that are way too young for the role, ala Jaden Smith as The Karate Kid. Oh well, we can’t stop this train, so we might as well sit back and enjoy the ride.
What are your thoughts on a Mannequin remake?
No dates announced for Mannequin yet.
