Greef Karga's backstory is finally revealed in the season finale of The Mandalorian. Greef Karga was introduced at the beginning of the series as the leader of the Bounty Hunter's Guild and a long-time associate of the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal). Greef Karga is portrayed by Carl Weathers, the actor known for playing Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise.

Weathers' character in The Mandalorian set Mando's story in motion by sending him to do a task for the Client (Werner Herzog). Greef Karga turns into an antagonist when Mando goes against the bounty hunter code and tries to save Baby Yoda. In episode 7, Karga attempts to lure Mando into a trap, but when Baby Yoda heals a wound that he sustained in battle against a group of flying creatures, Karga experiences a change of heart and forms an alliance with Mando, Cara Dune (Gina Carano), and Kuiil (Nick Nolte). Karga assists Mando in dealing with their enemies and saving Baby Yoda.

In the final chapter of The Mandalorian's first season, Mando and his allies are engaged in a tense standoff with Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), who tries to convince them to surrender. He speaks to each character individually, and demonstrates his knowledge by using their full names, including Mando's. When addressing Karga, Gideon refers to him as a "disgraced magistrate," which is the show's first big reveal about Karga's past.

Not much is known about the leader of the Bounty Hunter's Guild, but apparently Karga was a respected government official at some point in his past. The position of magistrate exists in various governments in the Star Wars universe, including the Galactic Empire. Based on Gideon's comment, Karga may have worked for the Empire in an official capacity.

If this is the case, Karga may have conducted some sort of illegal act, or did something else that the Empire frowned upon. Exactly why Karga is a "disgraced" former magistrate is open to speculation. But whatever this act it was, it must have led either to Karga leaving the Empire on his own, or the Empire dismissing him from his post. After the Empire's ties with Karga were severed, Karga's experience in could have helped him attain the job as leader of the Bounty Hunter's Guild, a role that has allowed him to operate outside the parameters of the Empire. As Karga still holds this position at the end of the season, he could make a return in The Mandalorian season 2 as an ally of Mando.
