The Mandalorian season 2's bittersweet finale saw Baby Yoda taken away to be trained by Luke Skywalker - but how will he survive Kylo Ren's burning of the Jedi temple and the massacre of Luke's students? It's possible, of course, that the little green infant doesn't survive the slaughter, but that doesn't bear thinking about.

"The Rescue" was a bittersweet conclusion to The Mandalorian season 2, in which Din Djarin gathered together a group of allies to rescue Baby Yoda - whose real name is Grogu - from the clutches of Moff Gideon. He succeeded, but shortly after their reunion they were saved from Gideon's Dark Troopers by the arrival of a single Jedi, whom Grogu had called out to through the Force while he was on the planet Tython. That Jedi was the legendary Luke Skywalker, now at the height of his powers, who invited Grogu to come and train with him so that he could master his volatile connection to the Force.

In isolation, the scene appears to promise a bright future for Baby Yoda. However, Star Wars: The Last Jedi revealed that in a little more than a decade after The Mandalorian takes place, Luke Skywalker's Jedi training academy will be destroyed by a raging Ben Solo - as a direct result of his master failing him. The Star Wars tie-in comic The Rise of Kylo Ren revealed more details about how the temple was destroyed. Immediately after his confrontation with Luke, Ben experienced a moment of pure rage at the apparent betrayal by his master and a Force Storm ripped through the temple, killing the students inside. If Grogu was among them, then things don't look good for him.

Luke Skywalker Jedi Temple Destroyed Kylo Ren

That said, Luke survived Ben Solo's attack despite being left for dead in the ruins of his hut, so it's not inconceivable that Grogu could have survived as well. For starters, the child has Force healing powers that he used to save Greef Karga's life in The Mandalorian season 1, and he could have used those same powers to heal his own injuries from the temple's destruction. Baby Yoda has proven to be surprisingly durable; despite Mando's best efforts to keep him safe, he's been thrown around, punched in the face, and experimented upon by Dr. Pershing, all without looking much worse for wear. It makes sense that a species capable of surviving for centuries would be more resistant to damage than humans.

The other way that Grogu could survive, obviously, is by not being in the Jedi temple when it is destroyed. It seems likely, given how much audiences love the relationship between Mando and Grogu, that the child will be reunited with his guardian in The Mandalorian season 3. Ahsoka Tano warned that Grogu's attachment to Mando could prevent him from effectively being trained as a Jedi, so it's possible that Luke will decide against encouraging his powers, or that Grogu will choose to cut himself off from the Force and rejoin his Mandalorian father instead.

Regardless of what happens, it will be interesting to see how The Mandalorian's story ends up intersecting with what lies in Luke Skywalker's future. Luke promises Mando, "I will give my life to protect the child" - a promise he no doubt made later to Han Solo and Leia Organa about their child. Knowing how Ben Solo's training under Luke turned out, fans can't be as confident as Mando that Baby Yoda is safe.
