‘Man of Steel’ Trailer: The Epic Origin of Superman (Plus 48 Images)

Published 1 year ago by , Updated December 12th, 2012 at 4:47 pm,

You’ll hear some people claim that we’ve seen the origin of Superman before, but the truth is, it’s only been in recent years that the iconic character’s origins have been re-examined on the comic book page, let alone on film. As such, there’s plenty of room for Zack Snyder’s reboot film, Man of Steel, to offer the world a modern and complex look at Superman like they’ve never seen before.

Judging from this Man of Steel trailer, what we’ll be getting is a mix of deep character exploration and the sort of big-budget blockbuster visuals you’d expect from a summer tentpole crafted by Snyder (300, Watchmen).

The story and script for the film come our way courtesy of  Dark Knight Trilogy scribes Chris Nolan and David S. Goyer, who are seemingly drawing from some recent (and seminal) Superman comic book storylines like Mark Waid’s “Superman: Birthright” and Geoff Johns’ “Superman: Secret Origin” – both of which re-examined the Man of Steel’s formative years – and decision to become a worldly protector – within the context of the modern era.

Man of Steel will similarly delve into the period of time in which “Superman” wasn’t yet a persona adopted by Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill), as the young man was still lost between his identity as a superpowered extraterrestrial and the all-too “human” son of Smallville, Kansas residents Ma and Pa Kent (Dian Lane and Kevin Costner). The arrival of Zod (Michael Shannon), a militant figure from Superman’s home planet, presumably pushes Clark/Kal-El to a decision about which planet his loyalties (and considerable powers) lie with.

After the disappointment of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, a lot of moviegoers are still waiting on a film that can truly reconnect Superman with a wider cinematic audience; the question is: will Man of Steel be that movie?

What is seen here is certainly convincing that it can be.

Man of Steel will be in theaters on June 14, 2013.

  1. Fresh, different and innovative. Not what I was expecting to say, but feeling so buzzed for this film following that trailer.

  2. Okay… i just came a little in my pants. I can’t wait to see this because ZOD!!!! trailer was pretty epic, but i think the movie will have some difficulty rectifying the new gritty realism with what many people (geek or otherwise) know superman to be. People complaining about they didn’t do supe’s right because he’s supposed to be family friendly and fun need to get over it or just watch the Christopher Reeves superman.

    • I agree that all these characters(DC & Marvel)can have different interpretations in every film series that features them, but don’t knock the Christ Reeves films(at least not the first two). Those were great films.

    • Thank you for that! Seriously if they like the old movies so much (good movies! they are!) that they won’t accept any new version of one of the most famous superheros (if not THE most famous) then they need to either chill out or just stick to the old ones. If I hear “he’s not Christopher Reeves” one more time I’m going to go bonkers!

      • I understand where you’re coming from, but look at it from the other side also. To many people like myself Christ was the first to make us believe that a comicbook character could be brought to life without making the character look goofy on-screen. He was & to many is still that character because of his performance in all those movies. So it’s not so much people are criticising the other guys for not being him. It’s just that people don’t want to let go because of what he meant to them & the franchise. People still say Michael Keaton is Batman after Christian Bale’s performance. It’s tough to replace actors that are that great in what they do… that’s all.

    • It’s Christopher Reeve, not Reeves

      • Yeah…and he’s still the best.Thanks

      • People get it mixed up because George Reeves played Supes in the 1950′s TV series. I’m a huge comics and film nerd and I still accidentally say “reeves” instead of “reeve.”

  3. EP…wait for it…. IC!

  4. So i’d love for this to be a trilogy and that we don’t come across lex luthor until part 2 or 3 or just have him have a cameo in this movie setting him up to later become a major villain. or hint at Doomsday.

    • I’ve thought that too about the possible trilogy layout. We (movie goers and fans) may actually get a better story by having this just be all superman and not just throwing in a JL film between individual superman films because WB want to$$$$$$. The dark knight trilogy would certainly not have been as well regarded if the films had been separated by JL events that would have had to be factored into the dark knight films plots. If WB do a DCCU it must ALL be up the same high standard otherwise forget it as far as I’m concerned it is all about quality

      • Are you saying that DC following in the footsteps of MARVEL is “Completely” wrong!? Which I think would be a mistake on their part big time.

        • What I mean is that a DC Cinematic Universe would be waaaayy better than “ANYTHING” we’ve been recieving so far from DC & WB.

          • Sorry, maybe I didn’t completely explain what I mean. Don’t get me wrong a DCCU would be great if done well. But based on certain factors including a very poor first attempt at a GL film, the fact that seemingly out of the blue a JL film was announced with no credible universe yet established (you know the first film has yet to be seen) and major characters still never tested on a mass audience – MM, WW are the ones causing me concern.

I just don’t want this potentially amazing new take on superman to be damaged because WB want loads of money, I can see no other reason for WB making this move now. Chris Nolan has proved that s*** loads of money can be made at the box office from a film focusing on one character if the product is quality – the 3 batman films of his have made so so so much more than all marvel films except the avengers.

I just hope that they have a plan and coherent plot that arches over the whole DCCU. I do want to see a DCCU and I do agree if done well it would blow marvel out of the water. Hello batman and superman in the same film plus WW and all the others, hell a batman superman film would be just as big as a JL film. I just want a quality product because if WB does it wrong then DC in cinematic form is frankly buggered as the media will all get on the band wagon and say WB copied and failed with their team up film. Think of this too if MOS has been a success but JL fails (I’m not talking box office as it will do well with marketing, I mean in terms of a lack of quality story – lets be honest the avengers was good but the plot was not the strongest, all a bit convenient) how do you then go back to MOS II and continue that with out making reference to the rubbish JL film.

Sorry for the essay but I feel strongly that WB should really focus on the quality of the universe that they are attempting to bring into existence as MOS looks ace so far but long term it could end up being a one off in a poop DCCU

            • I can clearly tell based on what you wrote that you’re a “BIG” DC fan. I for one don’t choose sides as I feel both worlds have their ICONS & Scrubs. I do think it’s unfare though to compare the dark knight trilogy(which “EVERYBODY” does)to all/any of these other films. Remember…just because two or more films belong to the same genre doesn’t mean they all have to be the same. Having “EVERY” single comicbook film similar or the same as the dark knight would be pointless & at the end of the day SUCK.

              • I am a big DC fan and equally I do think that the MCU is good – it’s a great first step at truly establishing comic book films longevity and the style that they have taken works for their films. However you are clearly not reading what I have written. A quality DCCU would only work if it was all to the same tone and clearly WB wants a Nolanesque tone – hint they got him to produce the first film in this DCCU. So they must make sure that they replicate this throughout their DCCU.

Anyway how can be anti-films that are potentially of a standard that they are nominated for oscars. Lets be honest, in many years to come what are the big superhero films that will be remembered from this era, I can guarantee that most will be DC heroes, plus the avengers film, as they are simply going to be better movies. They are going for better casts and frankly better plots. I have never ever been against the MCU and will happily go and see all their films in the cinema – I love superhero movies and do enjoy the marvel ones but I do appreciate that the Nolan batman films where of a higher cinematic standard. I am just suggesting that WB could do it differently.

One way of doing this could be to now focus on making superman films and let marvel have their day in the sun with a connected universe and make quality superman films for a bit. Then for a JL film they could do something completely different. My thoughts include doing a LOTR style three movie epic filmed back to back to back with the heroes being in their suits basically the whole time and have the league already established with a complex plot over the three movies.

If WB go for a DCCU they must attempt to blow marvel out of the water though as they are the competition and it might be best to do something completely different rather than MOS, then the JL just to compete with A2, then it will basically be the same formula as marvel with a ‘team up’ film every few years and solo films in between. I’m just suggesting different things really as it might get a bit irritating really to keep waiting for ‘team up’ films. Just suggesting alternate ideas but it is a really interesting debate on the approach that WB should take with their DCCU, I guess the pencil pushers at WB will say don’t mess with marvels clearly profitable formula. I do see what you are saying broadway but WB have to offer a different product to marvel so that general movie goers do not get confused between the two also if both connected universes are of the same style then that suck for everybody. I am happy for the MCU to stick with its current tone and for WB to keep to the tone it has established for DC in recent years. Again sorry for essay!!!

        • Why does DC have to copy the way marvil did avengers, what happened in TDK trilogy was men fighting amongst themselves it would take a Cosmic threat from another world that wants to destroy the world and enslave mankind. GL was in space and Superman and Wonder Woman don’t show them selves until the whole world is threatened

  5. Holly crap this looks so much better than I expected which is saying alot because i’ve been stoked about this movie since it began production. Finally we’ll get a three dimensional portrayal of Superman one that understands the choices this character has to make on a daily basis. I seriously can’t wait to see it.

  6. Awesome, has a very different feel to it, looking forward to this

  7. WOW! Every time I see something new for Man of Steel, I get more and more excited! I loved the first trailer, and this one was just incredible! I like not knowing all the details about the film in the trailers. Ultimately, I don’t really want to know Zods plot until I see the film itself.

As for the origin story, I got sort of a “Smallville” TV series vibe, which is a good thing. I always thought Smallville was the definitive Superman origin story, but this could surpass it.

And no, the purpose of this film ISN’T a “realistic” Superman. This film is meant to demonstrate how our world would ACTUALLY react to this character coming to our world. It looks like this movie is going to show the many stages of Superman gaining trust from the people. Im VERY excited for this! :D

  8. Not losing my mind over it so far…
-Nice hazy if somewhat Smallvillish visuals.
-Superman knows he can’t get every cat out of every tree
-Cue appropriate level threat: Gears-of-War Zod
-But is Superman that frog from afar that wrecks the ecosystem?
I guess I can see how Snyder’s and Nolan’s talents were suited to this.
Cavill looks a lot better in the role than I expected.
    We shall see…

  9. Not to bad, looking forward to seeing more.

  10. I’m a little tired of the continuous rehashing of the whole child Clark Kent being given the Big Lecture by mama and papa Kent. Same old same old. Seems trite.

I don’t like the beard. WTF? I don’t like the removal of his s-curl and red pants. I hope I can get to like Henry Cavill- he just seems a bland sort of person. Even though Superman returns was an atrocious movie, I think Brendan Routh was an excellent Supes.

Let’s hope the action and story can overcome these drawbacks.

    • You don’t like the beard? Considering he shaves it off there’s no reason to complain. As far as the curl I agree but that too is minor & probably won’t matter in the long run. Last but certainly not least where his suit is concerned you have to keep an open mind about that & any other changes they’ve made. I bet if this movie ends up being one of the best ever made all those gripes will be long forgotten.

      • I bet if I win the lottery I won’t mind the price of stamps.

        • LOL

I agree that this movie has a lottery like chance of “being one of the best ever made”.

          Seriously, like 1:175,000,000

          • You’re basing your opinion on a trailer which is unfair & narrowminded thinking. Why don’t you wait for the film to actually drop first before saying something like that.

        • What the heck are you saying?

  11. Looks great cant wait !

  12. Any concerns I had about how Cavill would look as Superman on film (not the cheesey photos) are gone… As soon as we saw the close up with him clean shaven as Superman I was sold…
As others have said this has a very Batman Begins vibe though. I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all, I’m glad they’re going that route. But I think the seriousness of it all may be a big turn off for a lot of people…

    • I think it’s unfare though to compare the dark knight trilogy(which “EVERYBODY” does)to all/any of these other films. Remember…just because two or more films belong to the same genre doesn’t mean they all have to be the same. Having “EVERY” single comicbook film similar or the same as the dark knight would be pointless & at the end of the day SUCK.

  13. I am so excited to see this movie. I am a HUGE Comic Book fan and I love what both Marvel and DC are doing with their films. Marvel struck Gold with the Avengers and DC returned Batman to glory with Nolan’s films and now its time for the Man of Steel to do the same. :)
    So Stocked lol

  14. It’d be funny if Amanda Waller appeared in a post credits scene as the Nick Fury of the DC Cineatic Universe.

    • She would make sense to be the one to connect all the solo films actually regardless of where she shows up. She would have a similar presense to Fury if presented the write way.

    • The JL would never work under a govt group the way the Avengers did. It’s completely out of their character.

      • It doesn’t have to be exactly like that setup. She could just bring to their attention that the “World” needs them to work together to battle a common enemy. It doesn’t mean they’ll work directly under any government agency.

  15. So everyone just loves this? Really? A whole lotta nothing if you ask me – this serious take on the big blue boy scout has no chance of capturing an audience the likes of the Avengers or Bats.

I don’t think Snyder is going to prove me wrong.

    • You’re basing your opinion on a trailer which is unfair & narrow-minded thinking. Why don’t you wait for the film to actually drop first before saying something like that.

      • You should be more consistent about the way you spell unfair.

        • Thanks “Spelling” monitor. I assumed leaving a comment was based on giving my opinion not to participate in a spelling bee. Just saying. I hope I didn’t “Mispell” anything for “Ya”.

    • Yes, I DO love this trailer. I think it’s done a wonderful job setting up a Superman film worthy of the long history of the character…as well as of his greatness.

  16. lots of water for superman?
    Seems more like aquamans thing.

  17. K, first just WOW. Loved everything about that, now as far as Wonder Woman goes, i dont get why people think that would be a hard sell, were talkin LotR meets Xena with a superhero gloss. That movie sells its damn self! Need more proof, go watch the animated WW film. Call Peter Jackson and get it rolling already DC. Also if they did ever do a Nolanverse Bats/Supes teamup film (which im sure they wont) would Bruce use his ridiculous Bat voice around the Leaguers? Anyhow this film is gonna be fantastic. And i hate to be a jerk but seriously, those of you who enjoyed Brandon Rouths “take” on Superman, i wish bad juju upon you for all eternity.

    • I think DC will reboot batman before or in JL itself and i’m pretty sure (more hopeful actually) that they’ll do away with the infamous ‘voice’.

  18. trailer looks great in my opinion. Cant wait for the movie. Next summer will have some pretty epic movies… Personally, thinking that Ironman 3 might make more money, but thinking (hoping) Man of Steel will actually be the better movie… and yes, im biased (huge Superman fan).

The trailer does spark a few questions..
    1) is that clark’s spaceship or Zod’s rumored Black Zero spaceship?
    2) will this segway into JLA in 2015? (please, please, please)
    3) (joking) will the dog he was playing with from the teaser trailer end up being Superdog, Krypto? (lol.. please no!!!)

anyway, cant wait… looks great… Not, that the Dark Knight triology wasnt great, but im hoping this will “tentpole” and add a decent blow to the competition with Marvel. Love and adore Avengers but would LOVE to see JLA compete and beat it. Might be wishful thinking… but… ya never know.

    • Zod has been done before. What is it with DC comics messing up its own franchise? and re-filming the same comic book movies that they had already filmed? All of Chris Nolan’s Batman with the Joker, Catwoman, Terrorists was done by Tim Burton, Brian Singer re-doing Lex Luthor, and now Zod, which Richard Donner and the Great Christopher Reeves already had done great versions of. DC has no idea what it is doing. They are ruining their own creation. Marvel Comic’s big guns came after DC comic’s big guns, and Marvel is kicking their butt left and right. DC needs to get new fresh ideas, instead of recycling the same great stories that they already have out there.

      • 3 points I have about your comments….

1)Your right that new & fresh aren’t bad ideas for them to work with however…

2)If the ideas they are using are still great to watch(The Dark Knight)then why is that a bad thing?

3)Yes MARVEL is winning “For Now” but lets be honest. Their lineup (minus The Marvel Cinematic Universe & Spidey franchises) hasn’t exactly been flawless to say the least.

I hope both(DC & MARVEL) continue to churn out great films to challenge eachother. In the end it works out for all the fans.

    • I personally don’t mind a reboot with a character that’s been used before. The old superman with zod was done eons ago and I can’t bring myself to watch that movie again it’s just too old. You could argue zod was done again recently in smallville but the last few seasons of that show were pretty poor. So I say bring on zod again.

In addition, you have to believe that WB/DC have looked beyond just this first movie, a trilogy perhaps and zod may be integral to a bigger story.

Who can really complain about joker being redone? Heath Ledger’s Joker was nothing like Nicholson’s and it was amazing. Anne Hathaway’s and Michelle Pfeiffers catwomans are totally different, as was Halle Berry’s :).

      • This is what I wrote in response to Serge’s comments….

    • “Kicking their butt left and right”
So because Avengers made 1.5 Billion and Dark Knight Rises “only” made 1 billion while DC dominates comic sales right now along with an animation department that Marvel isn’t even trying to match?

And honestly, who else would you want them to do with Batman other than the Joker? Hell, does it even matter what character they do as long as they do a unique spin on it? Nolan’s Bane was nothing like Schumacher’s, so why complain? This Zod looks to be completely different from the previous one, and the tone of this film looks to be, again, completely different from the Donner era Superman films.

Furthermore, how is trying to tell a mature cinematic story for Superman “ruining their own creation?” Flawed logic is flawed.

      • This is what I wrote in response to Serge’s comments….

      • @ Dredd, I am applauding your comment, especially the last sentence.

  20. Oh wow.. I was a bit skeptical about this reboot, well, any superman reboot really, because he is just too implausible in my opinion, and the normal superman costume is just so ridiculous that I can’t take him seriously… BUT… I think this is exactly what was needed… i LOVE the costume! And i am loving the gritty look of it, and the monologue.. and Henry Cavill too, though i don’t like him much generally. But here he looks like he was made for this. I should have trusted Zack Snyder with this, rather than Superman himself. I had a mind that if Bryan Singer could not do superman right, then no one could. I make an exception for Zack Snyder. I will definitely give this a shot.

  21. that was epic and looks so much better then superman returns

  22. i know trailers sometimes give away to much, but sometimes trailers can take you’re breath away from how they do them.

For example, tron 2 trailer 2 was one of the best trailers i seen in last few years, but now, superman trailer 2 just took top spot. well done for those who made it

  23. I just jizzed my pants, WOW!!! massive goosebumps watching this, Everything in this trailer was perfect, Shannon as Zod looks friken awesome, Superman taking off is where I lost it lol, boy I cant wait for this, its been far too long since a proper Superman was made, MOS looks like it will smash Superman 77, I still love those films dont get me wrong, but this Superman looks something else!! Eat that Marvel.

  24. I admit this came out far better than i expected it. The only drawback came from a part of the film i didn’t expect. I would have thought Hans Zimmer would be done with the “Gladiatoresque” singing. I’m getting tired of hearing it every time a movie wants to be dramatic. For the first time in my life, i’m beginning to doubt Zimmer :(

  25. Looks absolutely awesome! Without doubt the most anticipated superhero movie in quite some time! Cavill looks perfect as Superman & I’m thinking they got this movie right this time!

Simply amazing! Don’t want to wait another 6+ months!

  26. without reading the article or anyones comments, i think this film is gonna rock. looks very promising indeed, i think the new costume looks great and cant wait to see this. now im gonna scan the comments. cya.

  27. Staggeringly lukewarm.

Don’t think I’ll bother. This franchise is like the drunk that has to hit bottom before it sees the problem.

Yet another origin story after two big screen versions and a tv series that lasted A DECADE (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I’m just dumbfounded they couldn’t come up with better than ma and pa kent and general zod. I am dumbfounded.

Superman is 73 years old and there are literally THOUSANDS (T*H*O*U*S*A*N*D*S!!!!!!!!!!) of stories they could have chosen and they bring back baby superman and young clark’s first school bus rescue and General Zod.

The lack of imagination is disturbing. I think it’s gonna flop, big time.

    • dude its not the same story as the old series or a s***** tv show, its a fresh take on sup mythos and a different take on zod and sup.

    • I don’t think anyone should judge “lack of imagination” until we see the actual film and what they do with the characters. So, JUST because Joker has been used a million times, you would say The Dark Knight film lacks imagination because they used him instead of any other villain? It all depends on how good the script is and what they do with the characters. And hey, it’s not like we are getting ANOTHER Lex Luthor story.

    • What story would you prefer? Based on what’s been released, they’re trying to paint Superman in a different light than previous incarnations on film (it’s not fair to compare tv to film as they are completely different mediums), so it makes sense to take it back to origin. Otherwise, the film would just expect us to accept this guy on camera. Had they not changed anything substantial of the character, I would agree on avoiding the origin, but sometimes, you need the character’s motivations to understand him/her.

      • I’m just tired of people putting down a movie that hasn’t even been released. Wait & see all of them look like complete fools when they see how good it really is.

    • dude bite a bullet its a new fresh take on sup mythos.

      • If your comment is directed towards me then you clearly didn’t read or understand what I wrote. My statement is against people talking crap about the trailer & film altogether. Got it now?

  28. these trailer alone, bent the old movies over and kicked them off a cliff, dont get me wrong i enjoyed superman and superman 2:the richard donnor cut and parts of superman returns, this hopefully new series looks closer to the mythos and cant wait to see a fresh new take on sup and zod , im hoping this hints at future villains like chris nolan batman series , like Brainic, lex luthor, parasite, bizzarosuperman, lobo, darkseid, cyborg”hank henshaw”, doomsday

  29. I’ve noticed that there have been a significant amount of people who seem to be very much opposed to this film, mainly because of the darker tone, and the fact that Superman is different from how they remember him.

I am honestly at a loss for words as to why people are so vehemently opposed to a different interpretation of Superman than the original and iconic series of the 70s and 80s. It’s worked for other franchises.

We’ve had Gothic Batman (Burton), Glittery Batman (Schumacher) (try to forget about that one:)), Gritty/Realistic/Relatable/Modern Batman (Nolan), and maybe you can throw in comic-bookish Batman (Animated Series). We’ve had the tough Bond (Connery), the funny Bond (Moore), the serious Bond (Dalton), the suave Bond (Brosnan), and the brutal Bond (Craig).

I really don’t get why we can’t have different interpretations of Superman.

The only possible explanation I can get is an insane amount of nostalgia for the original Superman series. There are so many people who loved the original series so much and refuse to acknowledge any different interpretations. Maybe it’s because I’m a child of the 90s, but I honestly don’t see the appeal of the original series. Obviously, 3 and 4 were horrendous, but I didn’t love 1 or 2 either. They came off as very light, campy, and not at all what I wanted to see in a superhero movie. (Plus the special effects were bad, but that’s irrelevant, because I’m sure they were great for their times).

Anyways, I wasn’t really a fan of the original Supermans, and although I’m only one example, I think this is an indication that these iconic characters are all products of their respective generations. The 70s and 80s loved their Superman, but it didn’t really click with my generation. Example: Superman Returns. It was essentially a 70s/80s Superman movie, just it was in 2006 and had better special effects. (Personally it’s my favorite, but that’s a different story). But Superman Returns didn’t do well at all at the box office, and I think it’s because it didn’t fit with my generation, who’s used to seeing superhero franchises like Spiderman, X-men, and the Nolan Batman films.

So now, we’re finally getting the Superman of my generation. I’m sorry, he’s not going to be parading around in bright blue tights. He’s not going to change from Clark Kent into Superman in mere seconds in a revolving doorway. He’s not going to throw his cellophane S at his enemies. And I’m sorry, but the iconic John Williams music will not be playing. Yes, I know it’s iconic, and it’s the definitive Superman music, but it wouldn’t fit with this modern take on Superman.

This film is going to look on the character as if no other incarnation has been done, and start from there. It’s not just going to have a happy, carefree Superman saving cats from trees and being indestructible. It’s going to ask us, “Why is he Superman? Why does he do what he does? What is going on his mind? What does it mean to be Superman?” It’s going to delve into his psychosis. It’s going to deal with issues such as why he’s here, and how he can possibly save everyone. How he can be an outsider to our society. How he can deal with his vast difference to the rest of humanity. And importantly, how the world would realistically react to him. (Obviously, this is a lot of speculation, but it seems pretty logical when you take the trailers and interviews into account).

This doesn’t mean this is Dark Knight 4. This doesn’t mean he’s going to be Batman, sitting around depressed and brooding, watching criminals from the shadows. He’s still going to be the Man of Steel we know and love, he’s just going to be from a different perspective and with a different tone.

Seriously, grow up. I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to give up the nostalgia of the original series. That’s life. Progress is good. Change is good.

End rant. Haters are welcome to debate.

    • You were arguing your points in such a civil manner until you had to throw in “seriously, grow up”. Such a condescending turn of phrase.

      • Yeah, I guess my passion got the best of me. I want to keep this a civil debate, so if you were offended by the “grow up” comment, please ignore it.

    • Very well said. Couldn’t agree more.

    • Top post ezra.

How anyone has watched that trailer and thought ‘dark knight 4′ is absolutely mind-boggling.
