‘Man of Steel’ Trailer: The Epic Origin of Superman (Plus 48 Images)

Published 1 year ago by , Updated December 12th, 2012 at 4:47 pm,

You’ll hear some people claim that we’ve seen the origin of Superman before, but the truth is, it’s only been in recent years that the iconic character’s origins have been re-examined on the comic book page, let alone on film. As such, there’s plenty of room for Zack Snyder’s reboot film, Man of Steel, to offer the world a modern and complex look at Superman like they’ve never seen before.

Judging from this Man of Steel trailer, what we’ll be getting is a mix of deep character exploration and the sort of big-budget blockbuster visuals you’d expect from a summer tentpole crafted by Snyder (300, Watchmen).

The story and script for the film come our way courtesy of  Dark Knight Trilogy scribes Chris Nolan and David S. Goyer, who are seemingly drawing from some recent (and seminal) Superman comic book storylines like Mark Waid’s “Superman: Birthright” and Geoff Johns’ “Superman: Secret Origin” – both of which re-examined the Man of Steel’s formative years – and decision to become a worldly protector – within the context of the modern era.

Man of Steel will similarly delve into the period of time in which “Superman” wasn’t yet a persona adopted by Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill), as the young man was still lost between his identity as a superpowered extraterrestrial and the all-too “human” son of Smallville, Kansas residents Ma and Pa Kent (Dian Lane and Kevin Costner). The arrival of Zod (Michael Shannon), a militant figure from Superman’s home planet, presumably pushes Clark/Kal-El to a decision about which planet his loyalties (and considerable powers) lie with.

After the disappointment of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, a lot of moviegoers are still waiting on a film that can truly reconnect Superman with a wider cinematic audience; the question is: will Man of Steel be that movie?

What is seen here is certainly convincing that it can be.

Man of Steel will be in theaters on June 14, 2013.

  1. Hope the movie is awesome, loved the trailer. I wanna see Lex and Brainiac as the villains in the sequel.

  2. Personally, and i dont mean to offend, ive found most of Supermans villains pretty lame with the exception of Darkseid, Metallo, Brainiac, Zod, Luthor and Bizzaro sheerly for the goofy factor, Doomsday looks cool and could make for some badass fight scenes but story/character wise hes a bore. Mxypzktyl or whatever is funny but i cant see that working at all. The rest are all C list villains. Altho maybe Toy Man could work if done right lol. I agree with all who have been saying we need to see some knock down drag out balls to the wall battles in this movie. Superman can lay the beatdown like no other and its time we saw that on the silver screen!

    • The cape and the flying. They managed to make those things exciting again. Amy Adams is cute.

Great trailer. Now I hope they can get that to work over an entire movie.

I never understood all the flak about Zod being the villain. I figured it would look and be entirely different from the 1980 version. The more I see, I think this Superman is SO different from previous film versions that it’s smart to go with some familiar things. And unlike Lex, Zod can be punched.

      • Opps. I was going to reply to Scarecrowe, then changed my mind. I just noticed that you started off saying Superman’s villains are lame, but then list enough exceptions to pad out a nice series of movies.

    • @ scarerowe

EXACTLY! I agree with you there.

    • Use your not alone I despise most of the bad guys in Supermans rouges gallery I always thought they were lame as hell

    • I love Metallo, he has so much potential as a villain

  3. Superman is the strongest charcter in the DC universe isn’t he? Doesn’t that take away from the drama

    • He wasn’t born thinking “I’m going to go save the world!”. He’s an alien raised by humans so he’s going to have a more human mindset with superhuman abilities. That’s what the world would need in that universe. A superhuman on our side. Right now, it’s trying to find out who he feels he should be in the future

    • I think Captain Marvel is supposed to be stronger. I could be wrong, but in the 70s Marvel was stronger. Not that I agreed with it.

  4. Looks great, more epic than Superman Returns.

    • Hell yeah dude

  5. I notice there wasn’t a single shot of Clark in glasses. Has this been replaced by a super-growth beard?

    • They may or may not give us Clark ala Daily Planet, but if not it’ll be interesting to see where they go instead with his daily activities.

    • In comic-con trailer, you would see clark was wearing his glasses

  6. I`m really loving what I`ve seen from this film thus far :)The music selection is superb :D Its exotic and global. It really makes Superman come across as a Citzen of the World and not just a flag totting American… I`m thinking Action Comics #900 — Where Superman Renounces his American Citizenship. Is having (perhaps) strong influence on the tone of this film :D

    • Geez, I hope not. That’s what gave us ‘Quest for Peace’.

Superman’s adherence to ‘Truth, Justice & the American way’ has always been the core of his fight for freedom and goodness.
Any world level threat would also encompass America, so he can still be a world-savior/hero while keeping his American small-town upbringing.

  7. I think Clark Kent will be in the film, I think the trailer was designed to get the point across that they are exploring Superman’s struggle with being an Alien. Pretty simple.

Plus the fact hes standing in what appears to be the Fortress, wearing a white shirt and black tie…

    • Plus which superhero on the planet doesn’t have a double identity. It would be “INSANE” to have one & not the other in this film.

      • The only hero I know who could possibly pull that off is Batman.

But only for the “Justice League” movie. Give him a sense of mystery before revealing that he is only a man, but has established an immortal persona.

    • @ Metal Artois, I believe there was a picture on this site some time ago that had Cavil dressed up with his glasses on.

      • There was, I think its safe to say Clark Kent will be in it….but I would say the Daily Planet Clark Kent maybe at the end….people forget, there will be more than one film…This one is clearly about getting to be Superman, I think you will see him working at the Daily Planet at the end….my bad, cos in the trailer its just a white t-shirt.

  8. I know I’m ready

  9. Holy s***! That was awesome! This movie is going to be a blockbuster, I’m sure of it!

I’ve read commments criticizing the tone of this and TDK movies made by Nolan and I understand that there are too many and different opinions regarding visual styles of films and other stuff, but in this case, I just love everything about it! This is how a man with super powers who can fly and dresses in blue and red would look like in real life…you see, I liked Thor, but Asgardians costumes looked simply ridiculous when they were on earth…I know Marvel did this on purpose, because of their humoristic tone of films, but real life is more dark, less color, just like Nolan does. Maybe this move is a little to dark than it should be, but anyways, this is realistic and it’s going to be justo AWESOME! Just my opinion :D

Let’s hope that, for all us DC fans, this’ll be the star of something big!

  10. OK!

    So Here’s an anti rant.

I had absolutely ZERO expectations about this movie. Thinking “oh this is going to be another Superman Returns/watch-it-once kind of movie”.

    BUT WOW.

30 seconds into the trailer I was getting chills. This genuinely looks amazing! And if it does tie in the future Justice League Movie, I’ll be extremely optimistic about that movie as well!

Will be seeing this in the Theatres.

  11. My name is Kal-El, . ..and
    “I AM READY”

Ok, just fooling around there, I sure hope theres
a scene with such undertone, when kal-El finally
decides which side he will fight for. ..
From the looks of it this movie would be a smashing hit!

I’m getting a feel of the batman undertone but better and
regarding this i think it has to do with story,
the story demands that the theme should be a little dark,
it dosent have to be toyish and unrealistic.

  12. I guess I’m one of the few dissenters. I was not all that impressed with anything I saw and it felt more like “Superman: An introspective Journey” than what I would have preferred.

I also still dislike the suit (even the boots had the silly texture!?) and flying with his arms at his sides just looked wrong to me but whatever.

  13. I love this trailer I think the music is beautiful and it looks like a great new take in the character. I hope it is, I never realized how much Cavill really feels like superman until this trailer. Looking forward to this movie, in times like this I need a superman

  14. I can already tell this movie is completely different than any of the others. I think it will be badass, I always loved DC more than marvel but Superman has never been my favorite hero. So the fact that I think this will be one of the best Super hero movies ever shows how amazing i think it looks

    • That’s… relevant. Thank you for expressing your views on the topic at hand, rather than promoting your music video.

  15. Dark Steel Rises

    • Actually, it’s called Man of Steel.

      • Yes Captain Obvious.

  16. From the beginning I have had faith in this film. This trailer just strengthens my belief even more. Now one can just say the film on the whole will be great but so far the trailer presents a convincing entry.

I love the direction they have gone with this version of Superman. Truly to me he does not seem so much Nolanrized but yet modernized. Some principles that were used to tell a story decades ago do not quite fit into the principles we live by now.

Art sometimes is in direct correlation with our culture. Batman from the sixties is completely different from the one from the eighties. I love the changes I have seen so far to the Man Of Steel. He still seems to hold the same ideals of his character. Saving and protecting. It just seems he is applying a more modernized take on it.

Love it or hate it, it is on it’s way. Now lets just hope it all works out, and we can enjoy a great film with the Man of Steel again.

  17. I;m not a Superman fan but I love superhero movies weather there from Marvel or DC,I’m into the genre so I will being seeing this and I have to admit MOS seems to have a more personal yet epic tone and look than Superman Returns,so with this and Pacific Rim it just maybe one of Warner Brothers biggest years at the box office. Bring on the blockbusters and lets postpone the apocalypse!!! :)

  18. “You’ll hear some people claim that we’ve seen the origin of Superman before, but the truth is, it’s only been in recent years that the iconic character’s origins have been re-examined on the comic book page, let alone on film.”
I don`t understand what that means, but this film seemed to invite something whole lot new into the world of superman. it looked like they`re going to explain the origins of his childhood which wasn’t mentioned in the originals.
“Man of Steel will similarly delve into the period of time in which “Superman” wasn’t yet a persona adopted by Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill), as the young man was still lost between his identity as a superpowered extraterrestrial and the all-too “human” son of Smallville, Kansas residents Ma and Pa Kent (Dian Lane and Kevin Costner).” Meaning he`s trying to figure out who he is?
And although superman returns was a disappointment, i am quite excited to see this film. Zack said this would be his most “realistic” film yet, so i don`t know how well that`s gonna carry into what we expect of this film. But i`m quite excited to see a whole new diversity fleshed out in the world of superman.

  19. Superheros have been “reinvented” or presented with a different slant in print for decades. Comics are an art form, so is film. Sure, the charactors should have some core elements but I continue to be shocked at the dumb struck and stilted approach so many have at adding some flavor to superheroes. Yes superheroes, we are not reinventing the history of Lincoln or other great personas of reality. C’mon, sit back and enjoy. If the movie sucks, it will suck because of acting, production, script, effects etc. That is the nature of modern cinema. Let Superman and other great characters (especially of the DC universe)grow with the present era while new ideas uplift us.

    • @AJ Steele,

      Well said, sir. Well said.

  20. will this Superman top George Reeves’ classic 1950′s portrayal of the Man of Steel. Reeves’s sensitivity to his dual role, the excellent stories (at least for the first couple years) and wonderful background music have yet to be topped. There’s more to a movie than special effects–we’ll see.

  21. Want to know why there are no red trunks on Superman in Man of Steel?
Want to know more about the costume? Want to know more about Zack
Snyder and company’s take, and how they stayed true to the roots of
Superman but made things “fresh?” Well, here’s a fan blog about Man of Steel. Go check it out
