With Britain in turmoil over leaving the European Union, only one man can sufficiently express the rage and anger of the British people. Enter, Malcolm Tucker. Before his adventures in space and time, Peter Capaldi was perhaps best known for his role as government director of communications Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It and resulting movie spinoff In The Loop. Of course, the landscape of British politics has undergone an almighty change since Tucker was last seen and many fans have been wondering what the foul-mouthed politician would have to say about this divisive event.

For those unfamiliar with the term, Brexit is the colloquial name for Britain’s recent decision to leave the European Union. The vote proved to be a highly controversial one, with the issue splitting the British population down the middle and both sides passionately arguing their points of view. Whether you believe Brexit is a good idea or not, campaigners have been unanimous in their criticism of the British Government’s handling of the situation and Theresa May continues to make The Thick of It look more and more like a documentary with each passing day.

As such, it is arguably the perfect time for Malcolm Tucker to make his reappearance and provide his own unique take on the issue. The return was confirmed via a Twitter posted recently by series creator Armando Iannucci who stated “I have good news for those asking for Malcolm Tucker on Brexit….”

While Iannucci’s Tweet (coming just as Peter Capaldi is about the hang up his sonic screwdriver, incidentally) may have got The Thick of It fans excited for a potential on-screen return, it has since emerged that Tucker will instead be resurrected in written form alongside another famous Iannucci creation, Alan Partridge. Armando will be guest editing next week’s issue of The Big Issue magazine and will be penning a four-page debate between Tucker and Partridge over the topic of Brexit.

Some fans may be disappointed that the announcement wasn’t hinting towards another series of The Thick of It or a sequel to In The Loop but the announcement is nevertheless very exciting for comedy fans. Both Malcolm Tucker and Alan Partridge are the cream of the British comedy character crop and even though the debate will be taking place in print, it’s bound to be a hilariously over the top affair. Furthermore, with actor Steve Coogan still occasionally returning to his Partridge persona and Capaldi out of a job, the possibility of this debate making it to the screen at some point can’t completely be ruled out.

Of course, the big question is will Tucker be “Leave” or “Remain?” Partridge has already been described as a “hard-line Brexiteer” so you can perhaps expect Tucker to be arguing for the Remain camp on this occasion. Whether he can keep his cool for the 4 page duration, however, remains to be seen.

The Malcolm Tucker-featuring issue of The Big Issue is released October 16th.
