The idea of a Major League 4 is almost a year old, but Major League writer/director David S. Ward is finally discussing the project, which is in development. He wants to reunite as much of the original cast as possible in order to hand over the reigns to a younger crew of Major League misfits.
The original Major League released in 1989 and remains, by far, the best of the trilogy. With each subsequent attempt at baseball humor, the creators got farther and farther away from actual comedy. Major League III: Back to the Minors is so ridiculously bad that it should be stricken from the record like a Barry Bonds home run.
Ward, who wrote and directed Major League, is persistent in his attempt to reunite the original cast and destroy all memory of Major League III. Those key members include Tom Berenger, Corbin Bernsen, Wesley Snipes and Charlie Sheen. Sheen is the only actor Ward has spoken to directly.
“He’s excited to do it if and when it happens. But he can’t shoot it this year, because he’s back doing Two-and-a-Half Men, but we could potentially shoot it next year – in his hiatus from the show.”

Ward also discussed the concept behind the film. I’m not too sure what to make of it, because Scream 4 is doing the exact same thing. Ironically, both trilogies ran a similar course of disintegration.
“We’re actually talking about doing one right now. I’ve written, what I see, as Major League 3. We’re putting that together as we speak – in fact, next week I’m off to talk to James Robinson at Morgan Creek about it.”
“It’s 20 years later, and Wild Thing comes out of retirement to work with this 19-year-old player. We’ve actually got three new characters in the new film. And if the new film is popular, they could carry the franchise on.”
Essentially, this is Indiana Jones 4 meets Rookie of the Year. I want this to work out, but remain very skeptical. Major League is yet another staple of my childhood that Hollywood is desperately trying to milk. But even box office milk has an expiration date.
There is hope if Ward can bring back Rick Vaughn (Sheen), Jake Taylor (Berenger), Willie Mays Hayes (Snipes) and Roger Dorn (Bernsen). But all four of the actors who portrayed the hilarious bunch are in the twilight of their careers and may be unwilling to subject themselves to self-parody.

At the least, they need to add Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert) to the call list. He may be busy filming Allstate commercials, but Cerrano was just as integral to the first film as anybody else.
The rate of success for ’80s remakes is slim, but it has happened. The reuniting of the original crew provides a glimmer of promise to this production, but it will really come down to the young stars of the film. If they can produce original comedy in a genre (sports comedy) that is dead and gone, then you won’t be hearing any complaints from me.

there was a 3?
yes, it had scott bakula lol
You read my mind.
hahaha. I thought the same thing, too!!!
if it had the R rating humor of the first and a good chunk of the core original cast im all for it, anyone know if james gammon is still alive?
Wow didn’t know there was a two lol only watched the first. Might watch more though if Scott Bakula is involved Mr Beckett is the man he was the only decent part of that horrible excusse for a trek show enterprise.
LOL..he beter not be in this one, or else iwont be seeing it at all, he should just stick to tv stuff
somebody needs to tell the movie industry to stop beating the dead horse jeez
The first Major League IS one of the best baseball movies, nay, SPORTS movies, ever made. I still enjoy watching it every chance I get. That said, I really hope they don’t make a 4th one. The second one was bad enough that I didn’t even realize there was a third. Did it even make it to the theaters??
But we all know that Hollywood is going to ruin every franchise that anyone has ever cared about.
Agree Andy S….but I’m sorry to say Back to the Minors very much exists. I’ve seen it a few times. It’s one of those movies right on par with Dumb & Dumberer.
To second Anthony’s comment, what made the original Major League so enjoyable was the R rating, since it showed audiences a side of the locker room far removed from the squeaky-clean image of the Golden Age of Baseball, and closer to the foul-mouthed hijinks of “Ball Four”. You got a sense that you were getting closer to a sort of authenticity.
Major League 2 ruined this by kowtowing to a family demographic ignored by the first film. Trying to backtrack from “Ball Four” to Squeaky-Clean ended with the movie appealing to neither the non-existent family demographic envisioned by whoever created the second movie nor fans of the first film.
If Major League 4 can recapture some of that R rated rawness, add enough original castmembers to the mix in BELIEVABLE capacities, AND stay relevant to a perception of today’s game, it could hit paydirt, and make up for the other 2 failures since the original.
If they falter… well… couldn’t be worse than 3, right?
I remember the first real movie “Major League”, the protagonist, (because in addition to having a team in the history of Indians) the only actor ages and we are talking about the great actor Tom Berenger, who had a history well built outside the team, Including the presence of the beautiful Rene Russo.
“Major League 2″ as the story was OK, this time the protagonist was Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger co-star.
Incredibly Charlie Scheen, ruined half the film, as recited as in a soap opera (with all respect for the actors of Soap Opera) when in fact the plot is very good on moved on Tom Berenger movie got up to pace, unlike when the plot to target Charlie Sheen “that is a good actor, but not Tom Berenger is a great actor), the rate fell, and the film was flat.
Charlie Sheen is not Major League.
But Major League is especially great actor Tom Berenger, along with Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bersen, Wesley Snipes, Serrano (I not remember the name of the claimant) and other talented characters.
For finish and you really want to do, “Major League 3, not be guided on the role of Cahrlie Shenn but on all cast from Tom Berenger and Wesley Snipes.
blame the WRITERS, not the actor..then blame the STUDIO for making sure it was a PG-13 sequel……one of the funiest things to me about the original was james gammon though, he had me laughing hard in all his scenes, he played the crusty, take no BS manager to the hilt, it was a great performance
I did’t realize that Pedro Cerrano was the guy doing the Allstate commercials. I knew I recognized him but never put that one together.
It was really Bob Euker that made these movies. He was always the best part of them. The first one was awesome. The rest could have been good if they would have kept most of the cast. Okay so maybe not but It would have had a fighting chance.
dennis haysbert….well, i think thats how you spell his last name, but yeah, samne guy from the unit, 24…great actor
plain and simple both major league and its sequel were good. The third was pointless. People need to stop hating on Charlie Sheen. All people ever do is critize him. Put in his position in the 80′s how would they have turned out by now?
ummm jeffn, the second one SUCKED man, i think the majority here would agree
No
I do NOT agree with just about everyone. The first and second movies were good. The 3rd, my dad loves it, but I didn’t. I would like to see them do a 4th. I miss baseball humor. Baseball is a GREAT sport and they don’t make enough “GOOD” movies about it. I think they could pull it off, bringing back some of the original cast, just to pass it down to another, seems like a good idea. Let’s just hope they choose another good cast to replace them. I would say bring is Seth Rogan somewhere, Jason Segal, Paul Rudd, maybe even someone like Adam Sandler for the aging veteran. Sounds good to me, bring on the 4th movie, I will be one to watch it.
I like charlie sheen and I really love paying attention to his webpages and stories and I like his eyes and you know what, when I look at pictures when he was younger, I think of him like a young man, I like young men but I see my age, other people don’t, and they have stories and excietment or have a wild experince, so I don’t knock if people like younger people, older people, and I like my head into Charlie, and he looks sio great young or older,, I just started paying attention to him this year, I think it’s something about the way he acts and what he presents , I’m glad at some point I could have noticed films and TV shows, especially his, It all looks new, better then books
I like the idea of Major League 4, I’m sure the movie will be a blast to work on, But before you can make plans to buy your ticket. Snipes will have to be out of jail in time for the movie set anotherwords even Sheen will have to stay out of jail if he want’s to make the movie. The cast is a great group of guys just having fun. There are many other movies doing the same thing, When you have a great movie with an awsome cast you just want to make them as many as the fans want them.
A Major League 4 with most of the original cast would be a “Grand Slam”!!!
