[UPDATE: It seems that Mr. Oldman has backpedaled on his statement. According to Quint at AinItCool.com Oldman said "well, I'm sure they want to do another one... it might 2 or 3 years..."]
Live from the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, Screen Rant Editor-In-Chief Vic Holtreman has some major news about Christopher Nolan’s next Batman film.
Check it out here: Screen Rant Twitter Announcement
Gary Oldman did jokingly say “don’t quote me on this” to a crowd of 6,000 people.

Starts shooting next year? FREAKIN SWEET. Is Nolan coming back? Is The Joker gonna be back and did they find a replacement? Who is gonna be the villian(s)?.
Did he mention if Nolan was still going to direct?
There’s a possibility that Nolan will direct since by next year he would be finishing Inception. So maybe they’ll start filming after that film’s release, which is in mid-July. I really hope he directs, he should know which direction the third one could take. But the question is if it will be released on 2011 or 2012…
Starts filming next year means nothing if Nolan isn’t involved but I’m assuming he is.
I think it’s safe to say that if they had any other information, they would have posted it.
Also, not to nitpick, but why do we have to click on a link for one sentence of information?
Can’t you just have it HERE?
Which means either Nolan won’t take a break from shooting between inception and Batman 3 or (more likely) he’s not going to be doing the next Batman except maybe as a producer (or excec producer).
The fact that it’s shooting next year comes from the mouth of Gary Oldman (and you’d think he’d know
), but that’s pretty much all he’s told people.
I’ll take this with a pitcher of salt, but it would be excellent news indeed.
Sounds like a 2011 or 2012 release date which I think is perfect. Hopefully they’ll get Nolan back to helm the director’s chair and give him time to put his own personal touch on the film, and by personal touch, I mean making it completely awesome.
That’s the announcement? That it starts shooting next year? How is that “major”? It’s basically what I had assumed anyway. Who didn’t think they were going to make another one immediately? The movie is like the second highest grossing film of all time. Of course they’re shooting again soon.
A “major” announcement would be something along the lines of Heath Ledger reprising his role as The Joker. Also, there are about twelve too many exclamation marks in this post.
Evan are you serious? Clearly you havn’t been following the news on the movie. Also Heath Ledger is dead so that wouldn’t be major news just scary as all hell.
@ Daniel F
Don’t listen to Evan. I know him. He’s full of Sugar Honey Ice Tea.
He still cries when Maggie G dies in The Dark Knight.
I’LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE PROOF.
Evan let me give you a tissue to clean up your baby tears.
This is all I’ll say, “Nolan or Bust.”
Holy “Mountian out of a mole hill”…
Yeah, Michael Caine used to claim all kinds of stuff. Actors are probably just repeating what their handlers are telling them. Or, hoping if they keep the heat up, movement will start on the project. Until Nolan says it’s a go, don’t put too much stock in it.
I meant to draw a parallel to Caine’s statements about The
Dark Knight before production began (none of which were true– google them they’re out there somewhere).
I’m surprised I’m not really as excited about this news as I thought I’d be.
I guess Heath Ledger’s death hit me more than I thought. I really don’t care for anybody reprising the role, actually.
Call me when they announce who the villain for this movie is.
Let’s all just hope the villain doesn’t turn out to be WARNER BROS.
@ Daniel F, Kofi Outlaw, fightjokeorange,
All I’m trying to say is that the filming for the next Batman movie is something that should be readily assumed, considering the rampant success of the last two films, especially The Dark Knight, and that this “announcement” should elicit more “yeah, so?”s than “oh my god!”s. Show me some set photos, costume designs, or plot points and maybe we’re in “major announcement” territory.
Daniel F: You are right, I have not been keeping up with all the news. I’m not as hardcore as many of the people who read and comment on this site, but I’m trying to change that, which is probably a mistake. And yes, having the dead Heath Ledger be The Joker again would be just about the most “major” announcement I can think of. Except, of course, for bringing back Michael Keaton (arguably the most entertaining Batman actor).
Kofi: You cried in Star Trek and told me so.
fightjokeorange: Yes, you may get me a tissue. Kudos on the term “baby tears,” btw.
@Evan
The reason most of us are surprised is because a) WB have said they’d rather wait for Nolan to be ready to do another Batman instead of rush one out straight away without him as they have a lot of faith in the guy and b) Nolan is currently filming an alleged $200 million film (Inception) which won’t even be released until next year.
Which essentially means that contrary to what we’d all assumed (that if Nolan did do the next Batman and if WB would wait for him to do it then it wouldn’t even start pre-production until late next year, let alone shooting), either Nolan is power-housing through both these films, or Nolan won’t be back for the 3rd Batman. But at no point did we think filming for the next Batman would start as soon as next year.
So no, shooting to start next year was not readily assumed, no matter how much of a hit TDK was.
@Joshi
Fair enough, and thanks for actually reading anything that I wrote. Suffice it to say, you have enlightened me. But don’t think that this will be the last time that I opine on something that I know nothing about.
Also, although I don’t make any predictions about inception (not too thrilled with the title already) I’m pretty sure that Nolan is untouchable in the good-Batman-movie department, so I would be incredibly surprised if the third movie wasn’t awesome as well. Of course, it’s a knife edge to ride on Ledger’s coattails for the next villain (that’s a mixed metaphor). Partly because Ledger did such a good job, and partly because the Joker is such a good character. But they still have a huge amount of wiggle room for another movie. They haven’t even introduced a Robin yet!
That being said, I felt the same way after Spiderman 2. And even though I liked 3 more than most people, it still couldn’t touch 2.
Evan they will not have Robin. Not as long as Bale and Nolan are working on the film. Both have clearly stated they will not do these films with a robin in them.
Ledger wasnt THAT great, they could easily find a replacement for him… I just dont see why everyone thought he did such a great job, there are plenty of other actors out there that could replace him and do an equal if not better Joker
Im hoping Joker is back, and hoping some of the movie is set in arkham
also, Bale is replaceable imo
Oldman should have kept his mouth shut.
It shouldnt have been announced in that way.
Gary why does that matter to you? What is wrong with it?
Shamose you are one of the biggest dopes alive today!
I can understand where GARY (post earlier) is coming from. For the past year we’ve been hearing bits and pieces about Batman 3. It’s time for something to be official. Because yes this was Oldman making the news, but again nothing from Nolan officially.
