Mads Mikkelsen has expressed interest in playing the lead role in 20th Century Fox's upcoming Doctor Doom movie. This past March, Mikkelsen revealed that he had taken part in an audition for Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot, though he didn't reveal what role he was auditioning for. Considering that the actor tends to gravitate towards villainous roles, such as playing Le Chiffre in Martin Campbell's Casino Royale and Dr. Hannibal Lecter in NBC's Hannibal TV series, many people assumed Mikkelsen had auditioned for Doctor Doom.

Although he didn't end up starring in that movie, Mikkelsen did get his chance to appear in Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange in 2016, playing the villain Kaecilius. The thing is, he might get another chance at playing Dr. Victor Von Doom. At San Diego Comic-Con 2017, Legion executive producer Noah Hawley revealed that he was working on a standalone Doctor Doom movie for Fox, though he didn't confirm whether or not he would direct the project. Of course, one of the first questions that came to people's minds was, who will be playing Doctor Doom?

In an interview with Screen Geek at London Film and Comic-Con this past weekend, Mikkelsen expressed interest in playing the eponymous character in Hawley's solo Doctor Doom film, especially since it's not something that has been done yet -- at least not on this scale.

"Yeah, it’s always interesting. They are experimenting with doing some of the villain’s stories as well. Let’s see if they do that. I’m not familiar that they’ve done it with anyone yet. They haven’t done it with The Joker [and] they haven’t done it with The Penguin. So we’ll see when that day comes."

Since Mikkelsen has played plenty of villains over the years, which may soon include the villainous mayor in Doug Liman's Chaos Walking, Screen Geek asked the actor what qualities he looks for when taking on evil roles.

"Well, I hope that all characters have a little more rounded shape in the sense that they have two sides of the coin. Yes, they are villains. Hannibal is a baddie – but at the same time, we kind of like him. I think all characters – goodies or baddies, should have a little of both and I think that every actor looks for that in a character."

Mikkelsen has been one of the fan favorites to play Doctor Doom for quite some time, and comic book fans would undoubtedly love to see the actor take on the role. If he were to be cast as the eponymous character, he would be setting a precedent for playing two major supervillains on the big screen: Kaecilius and Doctor Doom, though he wouldn't be the first person to play two comic book villains in general. At this point, there's no telling when the Doctor Doom movie will release, or if the Fantastic Four members will be involved in some fashion, but at least we know Mikkelsen is interested in the project.
