[UPDATE: Deal is close to being done for Mad Men Season 5]

Despite verbal commitments from AMC executives, Mad Men still hasn’t been renewed for a fifth season. Licensing and renewal deals have stagnated for so long that some, including star Christina Hendricks, worry about the show making its usual summer debut.

The word around Hollywood seems to indicate that a fifth season of Mad Men is inevitable. What’s keeping the renewal from happening are two different agreements that have yet to be made: show creator and executive producer Matthew Weiner hasn’t renewed with Lionsgate TV, and Lionsgate hasn’t renewed with AMC. Though there’s no official word from either party, it’s reasonable to assume that money is the prime negotiating point.

In a recent interview, Christina Hendricks took some time to let her own feelings be known. Hendricks has played the salacious Joan Harris for the previous four seasons, and the character has become her breakout role. Asked when she thought she’d return to Madison Avenue, Hendricks had this to say:

I know that there’s a Season 5 and we generally go back [to work] around May, June…. We’re just waiting for the word on when. I’ve heard just as many rumors as anybody else about the scheduling. It’s already a long wait in between seasons for the fans, so I hope they don’t have to wait any longer.

Last month AMC Senior Vice President Joel Stillerman made a verbal commitment that the cable network’s signature show would return. While it’s possible that AMC can’t begin negotiating with Lionsgate until Weiner signs on the dotted line, you can bet that preparations are being made for Mad Men‘s initial filming. The show has a history of relatively late renewals, but none of the previous agreements stretched out beyond January.

In the meantime, fans can get their fill of Mad Men with the DVD and Blu-Ray release of Season 4, slated for March 29th. In addition to last year’s 13 episodes, you can expect three special features: a documentary on the inequality of divorce in the 1960s, archival footage of the campaign between President Lyndon Johnson and Senator Barry Goldwater, and a guide to business success “Draper-style.” Amazon has the 4-disc DVD collection listed at $29.99 and the 3-disc Blu-Ray at $34.99.

All Star Superman Movie Reviews No Word Yet On Mad Men Season 5 Says Christina Hendricks

If you just can’t get enough of Christina Hendricks, you might want to check out the upcoming DC Universe Animated movie, All-Star Superman. In a clear example of under-utilization of assets, Hendricks lends her voice to the animated Lois Lane. Fair warning: you might want to read our review beforehand. The DVD and Blu-Ray is on sale starting today.

Mad Men currently has no return date.

  1. Please read and sign our petition to get Mad Men back on the air in 2011! We have 800+ signatures and are aiming for 1000 before we e-mail it to AMC and Lionsgate. Enough is enough! Thanks, and please Twitter and Facebook this to your fellow MM friends! Therese Bohn

  2. No word on Breaking Bad either…. Which in my opinion is the second best television show I’ve ever seen. The first being LOST of course…

  3. Breaking Bad’s fourth season was delayed and will air this summer. (I think they’ve already started shooting the season.)

It’s a shame that these negotiations are delaying Mad Men’s return. It’s still the best show on TV and one of the best shows ever (IMO), it should start on time. It’ll only hurt the popularity of the show if season five doesn’t begin untill 2012.

  4. I will be “MAD” if Mad Men doesn’t start soon!!! It’s my evening program alone night.

    • I feel very similar to your comment regarding Mad Men and their unfortunate delay. It’s my great evening and anytime show( reruns on Comcast)as well!!

It’s not like there are no other televsion series; but Mad Men is bar none an awesome show that makes others seasonal series look amateur and fall short on human insights and errors. Breaking Bad is literally getting and receiving all the “breaks” since Mad Men is currently hostage to negotiations!! Season Five hopefully will redeem Mad Men big time!!!

  5. Season 4 of mad men is available for purchase already on iTunes… If u don’t wanna wait! ;)

  6. Her character on Mad Men is my favorite and I just think she is so incredibly beautiful! I also agree with another poster here that Breaking Bad is one of the best shows ever. I still think Six Feet Under was the best over all, but BB is definitely closing in fast.

  7. for mature people, no show is better than mad men.
but the waiting…ok, i’ll give a try to breaking bad in between.

  8. They might not have Mad Men until 2012 now! I can’t wait this long!

  9. I’m very disappointed that Mad Men will not air until next year. Even if it’s the beginning of the year, that will still make it a year and a half in between season four and five. That’s too long for producers to think the audience of Mad Men won’t be extremely disappointed and even disillusioned. Audiences take themselves very seriously. They are the reason a show is a success or not and it is patronizing to make them feel whored into waiting. This is a television series, not a blockbuster movie series and should be treated as such by having the season return each year as any other television series does. Don’t they know the difference?
