Robert Rodriguez failed to release a project in 2012, after churning out new movies for three years straight. However, that’s because he was busy putting together two sequels for release in 2013: the Frank Miller graphic novel adaptation Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Machete Kills, a followup to the fake Grindhouse trailer-turned real Exploitation throwback (or ‘Mexploitation flick’, if you will).

A Dame to Kill For is among the year’s most anticipated movies and arrives in October. However, Machete Kills – the second in a planned trilogy starring Danny Trejo as the eponymous, non-texting, ex-Federale – will beat it to the scene, when it opens a month earlier.

Open Road Films has set Machete Kills for theatrical release on September 13th, 2013, where it will open against Lionsgate’s I, Frankenstein comic book adaptation and face competition from the second weekend for sci-fi threequel Riddick. The official press release includes a synopsis for the Machete sequel, which is based on a screenplay by Kyle Ward (who penned the stalled Kane & Lynch adaptation) and story that Rodriguez co-conceived with his brother, Marcel.

Check out that plot summary below:

In MACHETE KILLS, Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent MACHETE, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet.

The POTUS in Machete Kills is being played by Charlie Sheen, while Mel Gibson is portraying the “eccentric billionaire arms dealer” (based on previous rumors). Meanwhile, Antonio Banderas, Demián Bichir (Savages), Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Red Tails), William Sadler (Damages) and Marko Zaror (Undisputed 3) are among the male cast members.

For an early look at female cast members Amber Heard (The Rum Diary) and former Spy Kids star Alexa Vega – wearing her full head-turning outfit teased last year – check out these Machete Kills images (via Twitter):

The rest of the female cast for Machete Kills includes Michelle Rodriguez (The Fast and the Furious 6), Jessica Alba, Vanessa Hudgens (Spring Breakers), Sofia Vergara and pop star Lady Gaga.

However, there’s no mention in Open Roads’ press release of Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness), despite Trejo himself being the source for her association with the project. Whether that means she wasn’t able to commit or is just showing up for a (not so) surprise cameo, remains to be seen.

  1. Nice to see Rodriguez hook Danny up with some more sexy co-stars. He’s been a hard working dude for a long time, nice to see him get his due. Even if it is an over the top B-Movie style show. The first one was fun to watch once. I’ll give this one a view too.

  2. I’m interested in seeing Mel Gibson in any movie, Get the Gringo was awesome!!

Machete was ok but lost it half way through, dont really understand the point in a sequal, it’s like the Expendables, great idea, ‘let’s fill a movie with loads of old action stars and blow s*** up’ but in actuality it kind of sucks, suppose I will turn my brain off for two hours and watch some mindless violence, I reckon Machete will crucify Mel at the end lol

  3. So Rodriguez is coming back as the one eyed revolutionary to help Machete then?

Also, damn at Vega, she’s grown up fast. I think I’ve only ever seen Heard in John Carpenter’s The Ward too and she was decent in that.

    • Check Amber Heard out in The Informers, very cheeky

  4. And yet Rodriguez still hasn’t released a sequel to Predators

    • Who cares.. I try to forget that movie even exist

      • It was actually a pretty good movie. I wanted to hate it too but it surprised me.

        • I just couldn’t get by Brody as “tough”.. don’t get me wrong I had high hopes for it it.

          • Guess the Predator comics were hard for Rodrigez to come by

        • I was surprised that piece of crap was actually made

  5. Machette was a great flick own it n I will definitely be checking this out for sure.. it will be a fun movie to check out just as long as u remember what it is your watching a “no brainer” action flick… n wow to the Vega Chicky should I feel wrong for saying that lol

  6. The fake trailer for machete was great but the movie is not that good, in my opinion, Robert Rofriguez had a few good ideas but he kind of lost them half way through… remember El Mariachi?

  7. I will definetaly check this out. As for Alexa Vega…damn, very attractive and very beautiful. I remember growing up watching her in the Spy Kids movies, those were some of my favorites back in the day

    • All big hits. set your dvr for those! Duh

  8. Machete was absolute garbage but thanks to Alexa and amber this is a must see.

    • Rent a porno it’s cheaper

  9. i want to see both MACHETE KILLS and SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR i just hope that they will both be rated R or NC-17 instead of PG-13

    • What’s the rating for a film that’s complete crap? Rated C maybe?

  10. Gaga is gonna ruin it.

    • They don’t need Gaga to ruin it

  11. Loved machete , but Danny is just a terrible actor. The movie was so fun to watch but during dialog scenes or when he wasn’t stabbing someone, he just stood around like he didn’t know what to do. I’ll go to see this though!

    • We admire your low standars

  12. Nope. Not looking forward to this one bit. After having my soul crushed by the first movie, there’s no way I’m approaching this one with any enthusiasm. Maybe it’ll be better this time around, but my list of issues with the first flick left a laundry list of bad tastes in my mouth.

  13. Stoked to see Mickey Rourke reprise his role as Marv in the Sin City sequel. Equally intrigued to have Mel Gibson on the big screen again in a villain role. Kudos to Robert Rodriguez on his stellar casting ability.

    • Oh yes, where can I find an out of work actor who’ll star in any piece of $hit film? Rodriguez should stick to Frank Miller’s work. on his own Rodriguez sucks

  14. Loved the first hopefully this one is as good. “Machete don’t text”, loved that line.

    • I’m sure the sequel to Machete will be just as good as the first. Not like Rodriguez to write up a script or something

  15. in case anybody hasn’t noticed but everyone is getting older, these people are good at what they do, the film is good old fashioned fun, considering the real violence you see on the news everyday! what is everyone winging about get a grip!
Take it at face value, alot of the old hollywood stars are either old or dead enjoy them while they last!!!

  16. They won’t make Freddy vs Jason vs Ash,
but they’ll make a sequel to this piece of crap

  17. Sorry, I was referring to Machete not Sin City

  18. Let’s face facts people.
Machete Kills is going to blow cause it will have the same warped sense of values that all illegal lowlifes have. Might want to wait for the flick to be on cable before seeing it.
You’ll be needing that 12 dollars when some illegal takes your job

  19. I can’t wait till machete 2 comes out, it’s gonna be just as insane as the first one lol, Robert Rodriguez is the best director ever, he never disappoints lol

    • What’re you his girlfriend?
Hey unless Rodriguez has a script already written out for him like Dusk till Dawn or Sin City, the movie is gonna blow chunks just like the first Machete movie

  20. Just looking over the reviews….
How long you all been here illegally?

  21. Want to see a stampede?
Have immigration raid the movie theater on opening night

  22. This is a poorly written sequel to the original Machete, which, at least had a cohesive storyline. Rodriguez must have been high when he scripted this film. The only redeeming feature is Charlie Sheen; here billed as Carlos Estevez, as the whacked out president of the U.S. His moments are too few, however, and cannot save this mess. Danny Trejo is good as Machete, and Mel Gibson shows up as a James Bond like Dr. Evil nemesis. Michelle Rodriguez is back, as is Jessica Alba; but they are given little to do. Several badly staged gun battles fill up the screen and I was extremely disappointed, especially given my positive review of the first movie.
