macheteposterheader Early Review of Machete Script

For the last two years, Robert Rodriguez fans have been clamoring for the full-length version of his faux-trailer Machete. Now, thanks to the guys at Latino Review, we finally have our first look at the movie’s script.

Apparently, the plot of Machete will focus on Danny Trejo cutting people up real good with big old knives (no surprise there). More specifically, Machete will have lots of double crosses, sexy women, and, oh yeah, a political assassination of some kind. Latino Review‘s guest reviewer (from the website ScriptShadow) was less than impressed with the script, saying it’s “Too silly. Too Simplistic. Too Dumb.” Overall, he gave it a “generous passing grade of C-.” Here’s an excerpt of his review.

Machete plays out exactly like you’d expect the 90 minute extended cut of the two minute trailer to play out. Rodriquez dials up the speed like never before, racing from scene to scene so blatantly, you can actually taste his attempts at masking the lack of story. Although if I had Rodriquez with me right now, he’d probably slam his guitar over my head and say, Who cares about the story?? This is about naked women and a dude mowing down people with a blade of death! And in that sense, the script is successful in spades. And diamonds. And clubs and hearts. The chop-first and ask-questions-later main character lost his moral compass long ago when he was double-crossed by his own police force. And he’s dead set on making the world pay as a result.

If the trailer and this movie interest you, make sure to check out the full script review at Latino Review.

When I first saw Grindhouse, I was blown away by Robert Rodriguez’s two-minute trailer for Machete. Combining all of the best aspects of Rodriguez’s previous work (girls, gore, and the inimitable Danny Trejo), Machete was, to me, easily the best of the four trailers featured in the film. Still, despite my enthusiasm for the trailer, I had yet to jump on the bandwagon for the full-length version.

Now that I have a better understanding of the script, however, I have to say I’m more excited for the movie than ever before. In spite of the negative script review, I think that between Machete‘s star-studded cast and Rodriguez’s flair for filmmaking, the movie will be 90 minutes of lean, mean, knife-chopping awesomeness.

What do you think? Are you excited by what you read at Latino Review?

Machete opens some time in 2010.

  1. I’m incredibly excited for this movie, and it can’t come soon enough. Come on Rodriguez, make it snappy! :)

  2. Though at least some degree of storyline wouldn’t hurt. But I have confidence in the result. And can’t wait for it.

  3. If it´s as good as Planet Terror, I´ll pass. I did love the trailer though, but unfortunately it´s not Quentin who brings Machete to life.

  4. O, and why not give a Grindhouse movie a good story, what’s so bad (or difficult) about that?

  5. I’d be even more excited if Lindsay Lohan showed her ho-has in it. Come on RR, give the world what it wants.

  6. Even if this movie has no story if it has funny one liners like in that great trailer it will be an automatic classic

  7. Grindhouse, was actually the best experience i ever have in a cinema. The both movies was good, the concept about the film was awsome. I read somewere, the machete was in a double feature too and the second movie was with the two crazy bitches. If it’s real, im very happy. I just worried about the 2 dvd version of the film. WHY SPLIT A MOVIE LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, Machete will be a very good movie. Rodriguez will know the the people waiting this movie. And im sure i will not be disappointed!!!!

You did see the trailer this will be based on, right? Utter B-movie madness. I’m usually a stickler for story with my action but when it comes to this I would have zero expectations of a story and this quote:

“Who cares about the story?? This is about naked women and a dude mowing down people with a blade of death!”

    sums it up quite nicely.

And Tarantino directing this? This isn’t about long, involved scenes of interesting dialog – it’s about unabashed low-down ass-kicking. :-P

  9. Even though I’m looking forward to seeing this,it seems like everyone is forgetting that as great as Grindhouse was,it was a total flop in the theaters
,and I don’t see this one performing any better.

It’s targeted too sharply to a niche audience, and those usually don’t do very good.

Now you may say,”who cares how it does in the theaters,I’m still gonna see it”.Well the point is,after a while, with constant flops, movie studios get a little hesitant to make movies like this, knowing that is pretty much a losing effort,so they stop.

Not trying to rag on it,but I’m just saying, enjoy these types of movies while they last.

  10. It seems the reviewer missed the whole point of the movie. A movie based on a 2 minute trailer that’s based on nothing more than badass-ery.

Plus Steven Seagal and De Niro in the same movie? Giddy up.

  11. @Longshanks

Yeah, the key here would be to keep this LOW budget so it makes a profit – but with all the well-known names now attached to this I don’t know how low they can keep it (unless they all go for back-end deals).

  12. Trejo and Rodriguez are GREAT, I can’t wait for this flick.

    Seagal AND Deniro too ??
this movie , for me , shall be a cornucopia of awesomeness :)

  13. Who ever asked why Grindhouse cant produce a Grindhouse movie with a decent story has obviously never seen a real Grindhouse movie that predates Quinten and rodriquez Grindhouse collaboration. The point of grindhouse movies was shock value, violence and breasts. If a grindhouse movie had a storyline we’d be watching Cloverfield all over again and be bored and disappointed.

  14. @ LongShanks

“Now you may say,”who cares how it does in the theaters,I’m still gonna see it”.Well the point is,after a while, with constant flops, movie studios get a little hesitant to make movies like this, knowing that is pretty much a losing effort,so they stop.”

I have yet to see Hollywood stop making spoof movies such as Disaster Movie, meet The Spartans, Dance Movie, and other crap by the same people involved in some way or another with the original Scary Movie.

  15. I want to the other Grindhouse trailers get their own movies so i can watch Nicholas Cage play Fu Manchu

  16. @ Allen

Well Eli ROth is Making Thanksgiving, that’s one of the best new school Grindhouse triailers I have seen thus far.

  17. aside from Machete ;)

  18. You guys dont even see whats going on. This movie could have come out 3 years ago…but no…it comes out when media is basically provoking a race war between whites and latinos. The timing is more than suspicious. Your being played by your lust for violence..and guess what…some of you are going to see a lot violence after this flick comes out. This is too predictable. you all deserve better, but you settle for this crap, and some of you will even make excuses for it. Its sad having to see so many brainwashed and controlled.
