machete Machete Will Slice In Theaters This September

Robert Rodriguez is a fascinating filmmaker, mixing family-friendly action movies like Spy Kids with gory, adult-oriented films like Planet Terror. Rodriguez is stepping back onto the adult side with Machete, a film stemming from a trailer seen within the Grindhouse double feature.

Now comes word that Machete will be filling screens with blood again on September 3rd. Don’t expect anything less than an all-out bloodfest, starring Danny Trejo as the aforementioned Machete.

The cast is a grocery list of huge names and it proves a brilliant mind like Rodriguez can bring in top-notch talent for even the most ridiculously cult films. I mean, come on, the tagline for Machete is, “He was given an offer he couldn’t refuse.” Awesome, right?

The cast (alongside Trejo) includes Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Rose McGowan, Michelle Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, Steven Seagal, Don Johnson and yes, even Lindsay Lohan. Come to think of it, the cast exudes some of the same sensations as The Expendables does on paper.

We’ve seen Robert Rodriguez work with most of these actors and they shine under his command, but it will be intriguing to see how he has casted De Niro. Something like Powers Booth as Senator Roark in Sin City would be the perfect fit.

As if you needed any more reason to see the film, Danny Trejo’s background is one not enough people know. As the cousin of Robert Rodriguez, Trejo was given a chance to escape his life of drug addiction and prison sentences, now starring in a major feature film. Seeing him in supporting roles has been savory and succulent, as he steals scenes simply with his presence.  Is Machete geared to generate laughs, as well as gasps? Yes. But seeing Trejo lead a film will be interesting, and Machete seems like the right role for him to tackle.

Rodriguez’s Planet Terror was the redeeming side of his collaborative work with Quentin Tarantino, whose Death Proof was disappointing to many. Expect Machete to follow in the stylistic footsteps of the previous Grindhouse flicks, merging gore and B-movie humor in a highly-stylized movie where people will most definitely die. It will surely earn its R-rating.

On the family-friendly side of Rodriguez’s career, he will begin working on Spy Kids 4: Armageddon once Machete winds down. We are still waiting on Sin City 2 and maybe if we all collectively hope for it enough, it will follow up the fourth Spy Kids.

Meanwhile, Predators releases on July 9th, even though production ended after Machete – it should be noted Rodriguez was producer on Predators, not the director. Having said that, maybe his busy schedule was the reasoning behind having Ethan Maniquis as a co-director on Machete.

How does that release date sit with you? Not many big movies surrounding it, so are you anxious for early September? Let us know in the comments section below.

  1. Cant't wait for it. I think it will be funny. First movie I remember seeing Trejo in was Penitentiary , don't remember if it was 1,2, or 3, but he was one of the boxers in the ring when leon Isaac kennedy's character is sent to prison.

  2. As a Austinite (and having a office a block away from a couple of the locations) I always look forward to Rodriguez films.

Also Trejo is just as intimidating walking down the street as he is on screen.

  3. Trejo is f**cking AWESOME !!!!
