The M3GAN trailer, which introduced audiences to the titular killer android who inexplicably loves to dance, received millions of views online and become a surprise hit on TikTok, where M3GAN-related posts have been viewed over 300 million times.
Now, one month after the M3GAN trailer was released, a sequel to the unreleased sci-fi horror film is already being considered. According to The New York Times, Universal was so satisfied with the trailer and its reception that the studio is already discussing a M3GAN sequel. No other information was provided regarding the writer, director, cast, or overall direction of the potential sequel.
What M3GAN 2 Could Be About
It's difficult to speculate about the plot of a potential sequel before M3GAN is even released. However, a continuation would likely follow the titular doll wherever she ends up next. Regardless of whether M3GAN survives the events of the first film, the android prototype could always be rebuilt or reconstructed and find herself in the possession of another unsuspecting family whose lonely child desperately needs a companion.
For a second installment, perhaps M3GAN could take a page out of Annabelle's playbook, which was also masterminded by Wan. A spinoff of The Conjuring, the Annabelle films focus on the origins of the titular doll before Annabelle comes home in the third movie. Perhaps the most obvious route for M3GAN 2 to take would be to tell a full-fledged origin story for the android. Universal's early discussions about a M3GAN sequel are a strong indication the upcoming horror film will serve as a springboard for another cinematic franchise from the mind of Wan. However, this will hinge largely on M3GAN's performance at the box office when it releases on January 6.
Whatever direction a potential M3GAN sequel decides to take, the two production companies behind it could become permanently linked as a result. After years of collaboration, including M3GAN, the horror masters Wan and Blum are looking to merge their studios very soon.
