The Marvel juggernaut continues forward, with seemingly nothing able to stop its march through all media. With Captain America: Civil War already above $1 billion in worldwide box-office sales, it’s set to be another banner year for the company, and fans still have Doctor Strange to look forward to this fall. The success of Marvel’s films has led to the successes in television, perhaps most notably with their original Netflix series.
With two seasons of Daredevil and one of Jessica Jones already under the studio’s belt, the Hell’s Kitchen corner of the MCU has offered some of the most entertaining live-action comic book storytelling in recent history. The success of the two series bodes well for Marvel and Netflix’s plans for The Defenders, an Avengers-style crossover event bringing multiple characters together for an epic superhero extravaganza. Netflix is still a few series short of a full roster, though, but there is plenty more on the way. The next chapter of The Defenders saga, Luke Cage, premieres later this year, and a new look at what’s to come has popped up on the Internet.
A series of set photos was released by Italian site Cinefilos, giving a close look at Mike Colton (Jessica Jones) as Luke Cage, Alfre Woodard (Annabelle) as Mariah Dillard, and Erik LaRay Harvey (Boardwalk Empire) as Diamondback. The link was included in a tweet by Twitter user MCU MX, and should provide enough fodder to appease fans eager for more information about the upcoming series.
Diamondback is shown giving a menacing smile from beneath his helmet, befitting for a villain of his stature. As an underling of New York criminal overlord Cornell Stokes, a.k.a. Cottonmouth, portrayed here by Mahershala Ali (House of Cards), Diamondback is frequent foil to Luke Cage, often wielding specially made blades to fight the bulletproof hero with. The two have a long history in the comic books, with Cage having once been a part of the criminal gang Diamondback belongs to; the pair were quite the effective team before jealousy surrounding Reva Connors led to Luke being framed by Diamondback and sent to prison. Cage’s complex backstory was hinted at during his introduction on last year’s Jessica Jones.
While specifics regarding the plot have not yet been released, the inclusion of Diamondback and Cottonmouth does suggest the series will involve Cage facing off against his former criminal cohorts to both clear his name and exact his revenge. This would make for a solid narrative for the initial season of Luke Cage, and judging from the set photos, everything looks like it’s coming together for the series premiere in the fall.
Even though these set photos don’t reveal much about the plot, they’re a tantalizing hint of things to come.
Daredevil season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.
