Cate Blanchett will play Lucille Ball in an Aaron Sorkin-written biopic; Nicholas Hoult has been cast as author J.D. Salinger in Rebel in the Rye; Josh Gad will star as iconic film critic Roger Ebert in Russ & Roger; Karen Gillan has joined the ensemble cast of The Circle; Ansel Elgort will star in CIA drama Code Name Veil; and Selena Gomez joins the casts of Neighbors 2.
Cate Blanchett will star as the legendary Lucille Ball in a biopic written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network). Authorized by the late actress/producer’s estate, the film will chronicle Ball’s 20-year marriage to Desi Arnaz, her co-star on classic sitcom I Love Lucy, and will be produced by the pair’s two children.
The project will mark another real-life subject for Sorkin, who also wrote the upcoming Steve Jobs film starring Michael Fassbender as the late Apple co-founder. Blanchett famously won her first Academy Award for her portrayal of another Hollywood icon as Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator.

Nicholas Hoult will take on the role of novelist J.D. Salinger in the upcoming biopic Rebel in the Rye. The film is written and directed by Emmy winner Danny Strong (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1), who is making his feature directorial debut with the project. Hoult’s recent credits include Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Warm Bodies.
Salinger was, of course, best known for his controversial 1951 novel “Catcher in the Rye”. This new film will be adapted from the Kenneth Slawenski’s biography, “J.D. Salinger: A Life”, and will explore the story behind the creation of Salinger’s famous work – as well as the author’s rebellious youth, experiences in World War II and tragic history.
Comedian/actor Josh Gad (Pixels, Frozen) will play iconic film critic Roger Ebert in a new film entitled Russ & Roger, months after his involvement in the project was first rumored. The comedy – directed by Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart) – centers on the relationship between Ebert and filmmaker Russ Meyer, played by Will Ferrell in the film.
The two men collaborated on the 1970 comedy Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, a film which has gone on to develop into a cult classic. Russ & Roger will explore the project that brought them together as well as the ensuing battles they fought within Hollywood to get the film made and released. It ended up being one of the first X-rated films ever released by a major studio.
Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) has joined the ensemble cast of director James Ponsoldt’s The Circle. The actress will share the screen with Tom Hanks, Emma Watson and John Boyega in the film adaptation of Dave Eggers’ 2013 novel.
Gillan will play Annie – described as “a warm, cute, goofy, old-money confident and fiercely intelligent member” of the titular tech company. The film is told from the perspective of a young woman (Watson) who gets a job at the company – run by Hanks’ character – and becomes involved in a relationship with a co-worker, played by Boyega.
Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) is attached to star in a new CIA drama titled Code Name Veil. Set in 1980s Beirut, the film centers on a rookie agent investigating attacks against the U.S. Embassy and Marine barracks during a string of bombings. Before long, the young man finds himself stuck in a desperate situation in which he must rescue his mentor.
Michael Cuesta (Kill the Messenger) is directing the film, which is based on a 2008 Black List script – celebrating the year’s best unproduced scripts – written by Matt Billingsly. Elgort’s other credits include the 2013 Carrie remake, the Divergent series and writer/director Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children.
Selena Gomez has joined the cast of Neighbors 2, set to hit theaters on May 20, 2016. She joins returning stars Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne, Dave Franco, Carla Gallo and Ike Barinholtz as well as new addition Chloë Grace Moretz. Nicholas Stoller will also return to the director’s chair for the film.
No character details have been revealed about who Gomez might be playing in the film just yet, though the plot of Neighbors 2 reportedly revolves around a sorority led by Moretz’s character. As for Gomez, her previous big-screen credits include Spring Breakers, Monte Carlo, Ramona and Beezus, and voice work on both Hotel Transylvania and its upcoming sequel.
