Looks Like Batman Can Beat Up Superman

Apr 22, 2005 by

The first photo of Brandon Routh in the Superman costume has popped up online thanks to USA Today. What you may not have seen is one of a number of new images of Christian Bale from Batman Begins. Now I’m sorry, but when I compare the images I’ve seen of Batman and this one of Superman… Routh just looks kind of… dorky.

I mean compare these two images. Look at how Bale beefed up for the role (those arms are monstrous!). When I picture Superman, I picture a monstrously buff dude, not the picure I see here. (Click on the image for a larger version):

Christian Bale vs. Brandon Routh

I mean sure, Routh makes a great Clark Kent, but as Superman I just don’t think he’s big enough or tall enough. With the boots his legs just look kind of stubby.

I don’t know… maybe it’s just the one shot. Tobey Maguire managed to pull off a short, squat Spiderman so maybe this’ll work.

I’m not too excited about that Superman Returns image but once again my anticipation for Batman Begins has been kicked up another notch.

  1. Batman can take me home in his Batmobile ANYTIME! :P

  2. Aw Simone you big pushover.

    Vic

  3. Actually Vic, the Bat had to try very hard, but once I give in, that’s it! Everything out of the window! LOL

Looking at Superman, I dont like the costume, please tell me that they will change that!

  4. Yeah, that Superman costume has gotta go. If there had been a campy Superman show in the 60′s, he would have worn that.

  5. Sorry folks, that IS the costume.

Like I said I think the problem is the body filling it more than the suit itself.

    Vic

  6. I have always preferred Batman’s suit.

    Yay!!!

  7. Those pictures and the possibly of the Batman v. Superman movie had me wondering, WHEN (era, decade) do these movies take place? And relative to the previous iterations (Batman through Batman & Robin and Superman I-IV) how will movies stand up in continuity?

And, given the possibility, when COULD the Batman v. Superman movie be set in?

  8. Zipper,

Batman Begins takes place before any of the previous Batman films. I believe Superman Returns takes place two years after the second(?) movie.

As to Batman vs Superman, it could be set at any time.

  9. Cool site! :)
hey! seems to be the day for comparison pics. Will definitely have to link this on my site. Thanks for the comment by the way. :D

  10. Jorge, no problem. I loved what you did with Superman’s uniform.

For you folks who don’t know what I’m referring to, Jorge did some improving to the image of Superman above at his site. He tweaked the colors but the major improvement was increasing the size of the “S” insignia on his chest.

You can check it out here.

  11. God help me I hope something can be fixed with creative lighting. Like pitch blackness.

  12. I can’t disagree with you there Taj. I assume of course, that you’re referring to the Superman costume. :P

  13. VIC, guess what…next time you compare two pictures try to make them of the same pose and distance. as you can obviously see christian is closer and he’s flexing more…

  14. Neil, maybe you can get the two studios to cooperate and send me two identical character poses from two completely different movies.

Flexed or not, you can tell that Bale’s upper arms are about double the size of Routh’s and his chest is way bigger as well.

Pretty obvious… flexed or not, different poses or not.
