While once a rarity, it seems more and more now that shows of all types have a chance at being resurrected by outside networks when given up on by their original home, and one of the latest examples is A&E’s critically acclaimed Longmire. Produced by Warner Horizon Television, Longmire found new life thanks to fan support that convinced Netflix to pick up the show for a fourth season on the SVOD service.
For the uninitiated, Longmire centers on the life of “Walt Longmire, a dedicated and unflappable sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming. Widowed only a year, he is a man in psychic repair but buries his pain behind his brave face, unassuming grin and dry wit.” The series stars Robert Taylor as the title character, in addition to Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bailey Chase, Cassidy Freeman and Adam Bartley.

While the series had fairly consistent ratings above 3.5 million in the overall audience tally, it was never really enough to warrant A&E to keep the series on the air when they owned no piece of the backend. It was popular with fans, but much of the show’s tracking came from off-network airings that A&E was getting no piece off, thus making the show a lost cause for them, despite its success in other areas. However, Netflix, a service that doesn’t rely on the inconsistencies of Nielsen ratings to deem a show a success, sees potential in a show with a fan base as dedicated as Longmire’s and picked the series for season 4.
In addition, Warner Bros. is no slouch when it comes to the television game. Considering an already established relationship with Netflix for series such as Gotham, Arrow and Dallas, it makes sense that Netflix would want to keep the production company happy with a pick-up of Longmire if it meant more high profile super-hero and genre shows would be on the way at a later date. But, of course not every show gets this kind of treatment, and the vocal fan base of Longmire very much went a long way to it securing itself a fourth season outside of A&E.
