The introduction of not only Alligator Loki but also Throg in Loki proves that the strangest Thor variant could and should return in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe property. Loki episode 4 changed everything about the Disney+ series, initially offering yet another MCU fakeout death scene for Tom Hiddleston's God of Mischief and then revealing not only that he was alive, but that he had siblings... sort of. The introduction of those variants was the first step to a bold new MCU future that should include Throg.

The fan response to Alligator Loki - who stole scenes despite not having a single word to say - was huge, and then the Disney+ show doubled down on the existence of incredibly strange variants by showing the Thunder Frog during the opening of the next episode. Voiced by Chris Hemsworth himself, Throg had a very brief, almost blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo, which long-term marvel fans lapped up. It was the kind of winking fan-bait that the MCU has been famous for since its inception.

That brief cameo and Alligator Loki's more prominent role both open the door for that classic character from the Marvel comics to return in a more substantial way. The result of Loki turning the God of Thunder into a frog, Frog Thor isn't an obvious addition to the MCU canon, but the episode 5 cameo proves the audience would respond well. Thor: Ragnarok also includes a small Frog Thor tease, with a thespian portraying Loki in a play (Matt Damon) apologizing for turning Thor into a frog and with Loki and What If...? changing the MCU into a far stranger prospect, it's time to bring Throg back to pay off the cameo and that tease.

Loki why one Loki Variant is a Alligator Tom Hiddleston

Alligator Loki always felt like a precursor to the existence of Throg in MCU canon, as including an alligator without an anchor in the comics seemed like an odd choice. His appearance indicated there could be a reptilian and amphibian version of the MCU timeline, setting up Throg. And the stage is set for one of them to appear and for Chris Hemsworth to offer his voice to the project. The question now is where that could happen.

What If...? will expand the possibilities for variants and alternate timelines in the MCU in an unprecedented way, introducing completely transformed characters like Hayley Atwell's Captain Carter, Chadwick Boseman's take on T'Challa as Star-Lord, and a zombie hunting version of Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Throg would fit in with that line-up and with season 2 of What If...? already in development, there's already an opportunity to slot him in, but there's no reason why Throg couldn't return in live-action as well. After all, as What If...? executive producer Brad Winderbaum pointed out, "what if" concepts from Marvel Comics eventually made their way into the mainline continuity. Loki's Throg deserves to be one of those possibilities without question.
