A new teaser video for the upcoming Loki series on Disney+ has officially confirmed the God of Mischief is gender-fluid in the MCU. Although Loki is traditionally considered to be male, in the original Norse legends, the character is best described as gender-fluid and bisexual. The myths tell many tales in which Loki transformed into a female form, sometimes remaining a woman for years.

Marvel Comics has honored this element of Norse mythology, with a number of stories in which Loki transformed into a woman. In 2008's Thor run, the Trickster God even possessed the human body intended for Lady Sif after Ragnarok. This so-called "Lady Loki" has been teased in set photos for the upcoming Disney+ TV series, with Sophia Di Martino wearing what seemed to be a version of the Lady Loki costume. Naturally, this has resulted in intense speculation over whether Marvel Studios was about to reveal Loki as their first gender-fluid character.

This has been officially confirmed in the most unlikely way, namely, in a promotional spot for Loki released on Twitter. The brief video opens with what purports to be the Time Variance Authority's file on Loki, and - as noted by CBR - under "sex" the file reads "fluid." This evidence is frankly more persuasive than any mere line of dialogue because the TVA had studied every moment of Loki's life in order to create their extensive file.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has promised the MCU's future will be increasingly diverse, and it makes sense for the studio to use Loki as a gender-fluid character. Not only does this fit with the original Norse mythology, it is also entirely comic-book-accurate and it raises some exciting possibilities for the Loki TV series. This means Loki could include different incarnations of the Trickster God, ranging from Lady Loki to Kid Loki; the TVA's note seems to suggest all those possibilities should be considered on the table.

The interesting question, of course, is whether these different variants of Loki will collide in a Multiversal adventure. Trailers for Loki have revealed the timeline has been damaged, and it all centers around Loki, specifically, around the variant who escaped with the Tesseract in an alternate timeline created in Avengers: Endgame. This Loki is the one who has now been captured by the TVA, and he has been recruited to capture a mystery villain rewriting the MCU timeline. It's quite likely this is actually another Loki, with the TVA going by the principle "Set a Loki to catch a Loki." If so, viewers could soon see different Lokis go up against one another, and Lady Loki could make her MCU debut as a villain.
