Logan Lerman NOT Cast as Spider-Man? [Updated]

[Update: Word is Lerman has NOT been offered the role of Spidey]

After the mess that was the cancellation of Spider-Man 4 and the rumors leading up to that event and afterward, the search for who will be the next Peter Parker may be over.

HitFix is exclusively reporting that Sony Pictures has decided on the man who will replace Tobey Maguire for the Spider-Man reboot and that man (boy?) is Logan Lerman. The news confirms rumors that started with what Lerman said himself when appearing on the Billy Bush Show.

When appearing on that show, Lerman was very honest and open about the status of the Spider-Man talks, against the better wishes of everyone else involved, and had the following to say at the time. This was over two months ago:

“There have been a few discussions, it’s definitely something I’m looking into. It’s [Spider-man] one of my favorite characters ever and I’m a huge fan of the series. I’d love to have more conversations about it. I’m definitely very interested in it.”

Those rumors were later partly squashed when Nikki Finke reported that there had been no business discussions between the studio and Lerman’s reps but we knew here at Screen Rant that Lerman didn’t just make that stuff up. HitFix‘s source claims that Lerman is currently  “almost 100% locked” for the role so there must of been quite a few discussions since that time.

Logan Lerman is a growing star with some significant roles in the recent films Gamer and 3:10 to Yuma, but he hit it real big earlier this year as the lead in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Other rumored candidates that he beat out for the Spider-Man gig include Taylor Lautner, Jim Sturgess, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jesse Eisenberg.

If Lerman is to lead the Spider-Man film franchise in its new direction, we could see the young actor starring in two big franchises for years to come. Playing Peter Parker will no doubt help chances of another Percy Jackson film being greenlit.

As for the Spider-Man reboot, we know it’s coming at us in 3D with a less-inflated budget of $80 million. The story will follow a younger Peter Parker back in high school and will be directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer). The speculation from fans is that the grittier and more realistic take on the live-action adaptation of Marvel Comics’ webslinger will follow the character as he’s depicted in the Ultimate Spider-Man series, written by Brian Michael Bendis.

For the direction Sony is taking Spider-Man going forward, I think Lerman is a good fit. While I have no interest in seeing the movie in 3D, I do like the idea of a grittier Ultimate version of Spider-Man, following in the footsteps of what Marvel Studios is doing with their Avengers line-up.

What do you think about Logan Lerman as Peter Parker in a possible Ultimate take on Spider-Man?

Update: Well it looks like our opinions no longer matter as Deadline is debunking the report from HitFix by claiming that not only is Lerman not confirmed for the role of Peter Parker, he is totally out of the running for the part! As own Mike Eisenberg said, “Many wish to be a weekend superhero, few get to live the dream.”

However, each time this Logan Lerman as Spidey news has popped up, it’s sounded pretty reasonable (at least to me). The HitFix crew is also pretty good about what they report… But Sony seems to be staunchly denying this rumor… Then again, how long was the studio publicly denying that Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 was falling apart?

For right now, my advice would be to hold off on claiming that ANYBODY is the new Spider-Man. Let’s just pause a second and see how things go after the dust kicked up by this Logan Lerman rumor has settled.

Screen Rant will let you know more on this as soon as we hear confirmation, so stick around for that and other comic book movie news!

The now untitled Spider-Man reboot is set to hit theaters July 12, 2012.

  1. I think (read:know) that it's not true, lol

  2. I'd like to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the villain, whomever that might be.

  3. well even if it's not Lerman, I still kinda hold my argument over my list of people who I think should play the other characters: Ralph Fiennes as Green Goblin, Clive Owen as Doc Ock, Jake Abel as Venom, Carey Mulligan as MJ, John Malkovich as Vulture, Josh Brolin as Kraven, Anton Yelkchin as Harry, Chris Pine as Electro, and Christopher Meloni as Sandman.

  4. As long as they don´t get Lautner to play Spider-Man, I´m fine with it.

  5. I never liked Spider-Man being an Avenger. He´s more of a lone wolf than a team-player. In the older Avengers books, he was asked if he´d like to join the team, but he always turned that offer down. And all of a sudden (in New Avengers), he´s like: “Hell yeah, that´s gonna be great!”

  6. Incoming Captain America-esque rumor levels

  7. Malkovich as Vulture?

  8. As for Lautner being named as one of the kids, it's better than being mention as the lead in Stretch Armstrong…….Lerman had the look to me. Eisenberg is all kinds of hell no…..Since their throwing any clown's name into the mix as a candidate, might as well toss Robert Pattison's name into the hat.

    • I know, huh? Ugh, this is spiderman, not twilight or disney or bollywood or ingie or regal or whatever………….RP and TL are random names and i bet they don’t look good in suits, they should just stop friggin denying everything and say that logan is spidey so we can get on with our lives.

  9. There isn't enough Ralph Fiennes to go around. He is a great villain. I'd like to see him as various villians in the DC and Marvel universe.

  10. i thought Logan Lerman wouldve made a great. everyone says he's a little too young, but just remember, he will be 20 by the time the movie comes out and most high school students graduate by 18.

i really think they should go with a younger and not a A-list star.

Graham Phillips, Cayden Boyd, and Marc Musso are some young actors who (i think) could handle it.

  11. Look I'm Spiderman and that's that! These other posers can go home. I bothered to post here because I admire Rob's writing and wondered if he wanted to be a stunt double on my new film?

    Cheers everyone.

    • Untrue! I admire u tho 4 ur humour.

  12. I knew id seen him in something other than Percy Jackson. He was pretty good in 3:10 to Yuma

  13. The idea is definetly growing on me, but as I was looking forward to another Sam Raimi film I'm still a little unsure. I can understand why Sony pulled the Spidy 4 movie as from what I've heard the actors fees were very large, but I still don't agree that they should have just scrapped the entire film.
Sony should not be allowed to own a film studio.

  14. I wonder if Sony's Spider-Man reboot will help or hinder any chance of a Marvel Studios version?

  15. Not only that, they pretty much wasted a good closure point and good villians, and when Raimi tried to make a fourth, Sony wanted nothing to do with it and now is fixing that problem.

  16. That's a great idea. He did make appearances in both Avengers and X-Men through the comics. If they are rebooting the franchise, it would be great to see even CAP says something like we need a leader like SpiderMan for this job ! Although, I could see this in round the sequel to Avengers rather than the first film.

  17. This is true, but it would be cool to even “offer” the call to SM, and have him turn it down and web-off – perhaps only to have him slip back in to save their buts !

  18. I think the picture at the top throws people off that he looks
too young to play the part, but I think that photo might be a little old.
He probably wouldn't be too bad, but I'm getting tired of these movie

  19. That´s never gonna happen, because of all the different film studios who own the rights to the characters.
And by the way… Spider-Man to save the butts of the “Earth´s Mightiest Heroes”? What thread could there be, which the Avengers aren´t able to handle, but SM can?
    Aunt May?

  20. freddie highmore should be a real contender at this stage. he's 18 now, has what it takes to lead a major motion picture and has the looks to play the two spidey personas. his american accent has been great for a while now too. finally, he's a great actor and could carry the story line as well as the action parts. my view anyway!? anyone else jumping on the highmore bandwagon!!!???

  21. Hopefully with MARVEL STUDIOS we will finally see a FAITHFUL movie depicting Peter Parker the MAN and his alter ego Spider-MAN.

  23. i am so disappointed, I was very excited to see it when i knew Logan was confirmed and now I’m depressed! what’s happening Sony? PLEASE MAKE IT LOGAN, HE’S JUST SO GREAT!:(

  24. I think Logan would be absolutley perfect for the roll. He’s such a good actor and I admire him for wanting to take on such a huge roll. Who cares if he’s young!!! He has so much talent and potential. Just don’t make it zac efron or Taylor lautner!

Good luck Logan! Ps: you r so hot!

  25. How can they not think of logan Lerman as the next Spiderman? He fits the part well. I can see him as Spidy. He’s a great actor. People who have seen his movies will surely agree. He fits as a high schooler. I thought that movie-officials like to have their actors look real and could actually BE in the situation that he/she is acting in. Logan fits. He’s great. And, he looks good. He could draw in a younger fanbase because he is young and cute. Greenlight him and have a hit!
