Despite numerous setbacks, the pilot for Locke & Key is progressing nicely. The last major cast member has been announced: actor/singer Jesse McCartney will play Tyler Locke, the oldest of the Locke children.
Jesse McCartney’s star may have dimmed since his teen idol days, but he’s still getting consistent acting work. He’s recently transitioned to voice acting, providing vocal talent for Horton Hears a Who in 2008 and Theodore in all three Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. He’s also been a consistent member of the talent pool for the well-received Kingdom Hearts video game franchise, and plays the voice of Robin on Cartoon Network’s latest superhero show Young Justice. McCartney’s most visible role of late has been an arc on ABC Family’s Greek.
Switched from a film to a television show, Locke & Key has impressive names like Stephen Spielberg and Star Trek producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci behind the camera. Cast members already announced include Miranda Otto (The Lord Of The Rings‘ Eowyn) as Nina, Nick Stahl (Terminator 3) as uncle Duncan and Sarah Bolger (The Spiderwick Chronicles) as Kinsey. Skylar Gaertner, an unknown, will play Bode, the third of the Locke children.
Locke & Key has had trouble finding its feet since its adaptation was announced. Despite a lot of excitement from fans of the comic book, delays in production and writing have seen it pushed back to a fall release. Fox has yet to order a full season for the show, and the network is set do decide after completing the pilot in May. It’s possible that the fantasy/horror elements of the comics may land the series on Fox’s FX cable channel, competing against shows like The Walking Dead and TNT’s upcoming Falling Skies.
Locke & Key will premiere in the fall – if Fox decides to pick it up.
