‘Locke & Key’ Fills Out Its Cast With Jesse McCartney

Despite numerous setbacks, the pilot for Locke & Key is progressing nicely. The last major cast member has been announced: actor/singer Jesse McCartney will play Tyler Locke, the oldest of the Locke children.

Jesse McCartney’s star may have dimmed since his teen idol days, but he’s still getting consistent acting work. He’s recently transitioned to voice acting, providing vocal talent for Horton Hears a Who in 2008 and Theodore in all three Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. He’s also been a consistent member of the talent pool for the well-received Kingdom Hearts video game franchise, and plays the voice of Robin on Cartoon Network’s latest superhero show Young Justice. McCartney’s most visible role of late has been an arc on ABC Family’s Greek.

Locke & Key has been in development since last February. The project is an adaptation of the critically-acclaimed comic book of the same name, which follows a struggling family as they move into a their old family home in Massachusetts. Heavy inspiration from Stephen King and H. P. Lovecraft drive a story that’s part horror and part suspense. The original storytelling and psychological themes have made it a consistent seller with comic book fans, and the series is still only halfway through its planned story arc.

Switched from a film to a television show, Locke & Key has impressive names like Stephen Spielberg and Star Trek producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci behind the camera. Cast members already announced include Miranda Otto (The Lord Of The Rings‘ Eowyn) as Nina, Nick Stahl (Terminator 3) as uncle Duncan and Sarah Bolger (The Spiderwick Chronicles) as Kinsey. Skylar Gaertner, an unknown, will play Bode, the third of the Locke children.

Locke & Key has had trouble finding its feet since its adaptation was announced. Despite a lot of excitement from fans of the comic book, delays in production and writing have seen it pushed back to a fall release. Fox has yet to order a full season for the show, and the network is set do decide after completing the pilot in May. It’s possible that the fantasy/horror elements of the comics may land the series on Fox’s FX cable channel, competing against shows like The Walking Dead and TNT’s upcoming Falling Skies.

Locke & Key will premiere in the fall – if Fox decides to pick it up.

  1. I was with you until you said that JMac is the voice of the new Robin. I absolutely hate the new Robin, but I absolutely love Jessie McCartney – the singer. Sigh, oh well, I’ll watch it. It sounds like something I could get into.

    • What’s so bad about the new Robin? I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Young Justice so far, and for a 14-year-old character, the voice fits fine.

      • i think that the show is great to and i love robin and now that i know that jesse is playing robin i think i love him even more !

    • I hate people that say they love a celebrity but they can’t even spell their name right. Jesse* …smh

  2. Say what you want about him, but the kid is talented. I personally have enjoyed his voice acting in the Kingdom Hearts games and he is hilarious as Robin in Young Justice. I think this is a great move for him.

    • I do want to add though that Robin’s laugh in Young Justice has to go. It is totally annoying, but other than that, he’s awesome.

  3. Went to the lot in pittsburgh last week…the set is coming along great, costumes are awsome and i personally think he would fit role…im not a fan of his but i think he’ll do just fine…and the show looks like it will be fantastic

  4. The scool that is in the show is the scholl i go to!!! :)

  5. Not sure about this casting choice, but I can’t wait for Locke and Key.

    • so far, the show has shot about 28 hours of dailies, having seen most of it I can say that Jessie is by far one of the bright spots of the show. The character is dark and mysterious, Jessie nails it.

  6. He’s a great actor. Can’t wait for this show! :)

  7. Looks really good. When does it come out? I love Jesse Mccartney, he is so HOT and such a good singer.
