‘Lie To Me’ Season 3 Ends On A High Note

lie to me season 3 finale Lie To Me Season 3 Ends On A High Note

Last night, FOX’s cult series Lie To Me completed is third season with “Killer App”  an episode involving a Facebook-esque plot that brought a darker tone (and murder) to some of Aaron Sorkin’s story elements from The Social Network.

While much of Lie To Me can be considered a proverbial stage for Tim Roth to show off his talents as one of television’s most skilled thespians, the season 3 finale took a step back from Roth’s scene-stealing portrayal of Dr. Cal Lightman and allowed co-star Kelli Williams to shine as Dr. Gillian Foster.

Despite Williams continuously adding rich depth to her character – and to an extent Roth’s character – she’s rarely had the opportunity to take the lead, both in character performance and storyline focus. Highlighting elements from Foster’s past, while providing wonderful backstory to her character, allowed Lie to Me to expand the potential fanbase of the series and, on some level, provided viewers with another character to identify with besides Lightman.

Whether or not this decision will work for the struggling drama still remains to be seen. While FOX has yet to hint at whether or not Lie To Me will return for a fourth season, the most recent ratings – including the finale – may be a sign that the lights may stay on at the Lightman Institute.

Two weeks ago, the ratings for Lie To Me jumped up 1.7 million viewers from the seasonal average. Even though the season 3 finale ended with 7.05 million viewers, that’s still well over 1 million viewers more than normal. Not since the beginning of season 2 has Lie To Me seen ratings reach the 7 million mark.

Of course, just because the final two episode of season 3 received a ratings bump, that doesn’t mean that FOX will be renewing the series – although, I’m sure they now regret cutting down Lie To Me’s episode order to 13. With a surprising jump in the ratings, there’s no doubt that everyone at the network is wondering what would have happened if the series ran for a full 22 episodes.

As much as I’d like to sit here and say that Lie To Me will return next fall, I simply do not know. Besides the fact that any speculation will most certainly be based on presumed knowledge of inner-workings of Twentieth Century Fox Television (and FOX is in a bit of disarray over the feud with NBC regarding House season 8), I have a bit of a soft spot for Lie to Me.

To me, Lie To Me may not be one of best shows on television, but it’s damn near close. Plus, I’m of the mind that if you have Tim Roth acting on your television network, you should continuously renew the show, no matter what – he’s that good.

We most likely won’t hear about Lie To Me’s fate until this spring, when the networks put together their fall line-ups and confirm their programming decisions. Until then, fans of the series will just have to run around pretending to read people’s micro-expressions and hope that Dr. Cal Lightman receives one last chance at redemption.

  1. Lie to me is an amazing series!! Bring back to season 4! We all want Cal & Jillian to get together! What a terrible way to end the entire series! Bring it back! The fans want more episodes!

    • Yes It Is A Great Show ANd EVERYONE Should Still E-Mail Fox To Bring It Back Over 1 Million People Have Watched It On Net Flix So E-Mail Fox A Hundred Times If Need Be Look Me Up On Twitter I Have A Bring Back
      Lie To Me #BringBackLieToMe

      • ME TOO!!!!

  2. Greetings from Finland!
I finished watching Lie to Me for.. Wait.. Third time now? I’ve watched them from the TV, but also from the DVD – as far as it goes.
    Guys! Put it back on!
    We NEED the season 4!
    And so do you.

    • Yes we do

  4. What a shame this t.v. show was cancelled. It was a great show with lots of talent.

  5. Well fox has ruined one of the best tv shows ever !

    • They do that constantly, Firefly, this. Just 2 examples. I’m so peeved off that they never get Gil and Cal together, come on, enough teasing#1 Season 4. Just for that please

    • Same here, it is my favorite TV show.

The only one who didn´t deserve to get cancelled. Even House MD could have been cancelled, house was awesome but it should have ended on season 7 or 6

  6. Lie to me is a very good show, you cant just end the show open ended then that keeps people wondering why? so if you bring it back and give people that satisfaction of getting there happy or sad ending they would be like lovely show hate to see it go, on to the next one. Think about it…

  7. bring lie to me back. stupid way to end series everyone is excited and it just ended. Great show should not have been cancelled

  8. Found Lie to Me for the first time ever on Lovefilm, and have been watching S1 and 2, and I swear EVERY SINGLE EPISODE is flawless. Fox’s cancellation on probably the best tv series ever is bloody ridiculous. Wasn’t messing up showing Firefly enough? Wasn’t butchering Babylon A.D. enough?…

I hope Fox realise that people HATE them for their eagerness to cancel shows instead of sorting out THEIR OWN PROBLEMS with showing them, like I hear this was pushed back an hour for something else several times. WHAT DO YOU IDIOTS EXPECT.

  9. O god I miss Lie to Me -.-
    I’m afraid there won’t be a 4th season. Stupid Fox :(.
    Hm, I’ll just watch season 1, 2 & 3 again. And again.

    • Oh yeah Hedwid, watch the film Rob Roy if you get a chance. Tim Roth is bloody fantastic as Archie Cunningham (meanwhile Liam Neeson is busy acting worse than a piece of cardboard).

    • Yes, I hate fox too.

  10. you see the shows lie to me years back would have been a top 10 show. But unfortunately with the world sinking into a pit of violence and corruption, and greed at an all-time high, good television doesn’t have a chance.

This next generation doesn’t care about themselves net alone anyone else and television companies still want that money factor now look at the type of television you get. violent, daemonic crap simple as that.

Easily the show lie to me was beautifully put together with the perfect chemistry writers and direction and actors. Do not expect it back but please keep letting people know that the next generation is killing themselves

    • I am part of the next generation(Im 15 years old)

I love lie to me, its my favorite TV show.

I keep messaging fox to bring it back.

But Its not my fault it got cancelled. I do agree that this “new generation” is b******* and its ruinning everything, but not everyone from next gen is “destroying the world”

      • You’re not new generation in mindset, please don’t label yourself as such. There will always be exceptions.

  11. and don’t forget gay, how can you forget Homo in almost every show. If you cannot understand what I’m saying that it’s too late for you.

Welcome to your nothing future and were worried about television. Yes I would at least like to watch a good show as this world spins out of control. Come on put on a decent show and get rid of those stupid homosexual freaks. But you know they won’t even let you do that so just stick your head in the sand and you know the rest.

    • Me too! If it came back I know tons of people who would watch!

  13. Soy de México terminé de ver la serie hace poco y debería de sacar la 4 temporada. La serie es mu buena y me gustaría ver más capítulos por favor!!!

  14. Bring it back ! Just watched 3 seasons on Netflix in 2 months!

  16. Bring lie to me back on air! That’s so disappointing that there will not be a fourth season.

  17. In the words my fellow country man cal lightman, bring back lie to me, dont be a bunch of wankers

  18. I really love this show. I’m a huge fan of Tim Roth & the entire cast on the show. The concept & actors are great! The show is entertaining & intriguing & I don’t like a lot of the TV shows out right now on standard cable & the good ones keep getting cancelled, like this one. Wish they’d bring it back.

  19. We are sure hoping to see more and more seasons
it is one of the best series, everyone loves it .

  20. I did not know this show existed until I watched it on Netflix. It has to be one of the best shows on television I am watching each episode back to back .. They are fantastic. How can you even consider taking this show off the air. If your ratings were down its because of your time slot or because people did not know about this fantastic show and these amazing group of actors and writers. If you cancel this show you are doing your viewers a grave injustice. Put some money into promoting and a good time slot and this show will fly on its own merits. People are just finding out about it. What does that say for you guys?? Someone dropped the ball. Pick it up. You can still hit a major home run with this series!!!!

    • Fantastic show, how did it get cancelled while “Bones” is still going strong. Honestly that show blows compared to Lie to Me but they did bring back 24 so maybe there´s a chance especially when Knifeman is still on hold/looking for a network.

  21. Please we want LIE TO ME season 4 i want to know what will happen with Ligthman and Gillian:) Too tham good…love that man…love the program

  22. Why would Fox want to have renewed a quality show like “Lie to Me” when we have so many reality TV shows which showcase the “non-talent” of so many. Survivor, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, The Real Husbands of Hollywood, Keeping Up with the Kardashians and countless other brain-dead series seem to be the future of television. What a sad statement about the state of TV today. Makes me want to cancel my cable forever.

    • you are painfully correct. the series you’ve mentioned shouldn’t even really exist. period.

the fans say: “BRING BACK Lie To Me!!!”

what does the FOX say now? =/

    • Totally agree. I don’t even watch cable or pay for it. I watch Netflix every night with my family. TV is crap now with garbage reality TV and all the views and the talk and music awards and Oscars. Tired of the filth.

  23. I also think that we Lie to me should be a sequel! The creators themselves to blame for the fact that he lost a number of fans. in season 1 Lightman was very charming. He was eccentric, but not irritated his habits. in season 3 made him Jumpy clown forever with an open mouth. season 4 should be similar to the first and spectators to it. For example Lightman had a good time in the mental hospital, got out and started all over again from scratch. Him no one believes that reputation is tarnished and only the old team is ready to believe in him. Will be very interesting to watch in my opinion how they will cope with difficulties.

  24. Lie to me is an amazing show which should be never-ending till Tim Roth is alive.

  25. I was a big fan of season 1 & 2. And was soooo disappointed when I heard it was not coming back. But I did not and do not watch network television. I was watching it on Netflix. After just watching season 3 for the first time, I can see why it did not return. It just got to be too outrageous and ridiculous. I was shaking my head through almost every episode. I was very disappointed in the third and final season. The writing was horrible. R.I.P. Lie To Me You could and should have been better :'(
