Liam Neeson Replaces Mel Gibson in ‘Hangover 2′ Cameo

The Hangover 2 might not be getting Academy Award winner Mel Gibson for its star cameo, but the movie will still feature an Oscar nominee: Liam Neeson. Neeson flew from his New York home to join the cast in Thailand on Thursday. The last-minute switch came on the heels of a decision by filmmakers to not include Mel Gibson in the movie.

While the cameo spot was originally meant for Gibson, cast and crew decided they didn’t want to work with the controversial star. Given Gibson’s negative publicity over the last year, and, more generally, over the last five years, it’s not hard to empathize with their position.

So what role will Neeson be playing? According to  Neeson, he was called in for a “one day shoot” in which he will play “a tattooist in Thailand.” He didn’t know any more about the role beyond that, but Neeson did say he was a fan of the first Hangover film. In discussing his appearance, the Irish actor told Variety, “I just laughed my leg off when I saw ‘The Hangover, I was shooting in Berlin earlier this year and rented it on the hotel TV.”

When Gibson was first announced as the likely celebrity cameo for the film, it seemed like a good fit. After all, he was following in the footsteps of Mike Tyson, a convicted rapist who served time in federal prison. My expectation was that they wanted to go with someone who was in a career rebuilding phase, and someone who was also slightly controversial.

Of course, there’s controversial and then there’s toxic. Mel Gibson, for all of his directorial and acting triumphs, is one of the most notorious celebrities in Hollywood. The bad buzz around Gibson is simply too fresh for the actor to mount any kind of comeback right now. He’ll have to wait it out some more before he gets a second chance, though rest assured, he’ll get one. It is Hollywood after all, where a hit movie can smooth over a lot of bad blood.

In any case, with the addition of Neeson, Hangover fans will still be getting a treat. Though the actor seems to have switched focus from his most critically-acclaimed roles in movies like Rob Roy and Schindler’s List to more popcorn fare like Taken and The A Team, there’s no denying his acting chops or his widespread popularity. I suspect that Neeson will do quite well in his cameo role.

My real concern with The Hangover 2 isn’t in the cameos anyway, but rather whether the movie can be as consistently hilarious as its predecessor. Immediately after seeing it, The Hangover launched onto my list of all-time favorite comedies. I’m excited for the sequel, but I’m interested to see how the cast and crew will keep things fresh and interesting. Adding Neeson to the cast is a good start.

The Hangover 2 is set to hit theaters on May 26.

  1. I like Neeson a lot but a hilarious Mel Gibson cameo could have shifted the Earth’s axis.

    • Too True, Rob.

    • Agreed.

    • F’n eh!

  2. i’d still prefer to see Mel have the cameo because Mel has that comedic charm and timing and he’s a bloody nutter so that helps seeing as The Hanger is pretty nutty at times loool

  3. Talk about an edgy cameo! Wow … if there’s one guy who can bring the comedy it’s Neeson.

The whole incident has been poorly handled. A Gibson cameo would have guaranteed press and a whiff of excitement. Will anyone care when Neeson comes on screen for his gag?

  4. the problem probably wasn’t Gibson totally…I think the issue is nowadays how much for how many lines and seeing that Mel is a bit strapped for cash as wellas a career right now-he probably was trying to get the best bang for the buck. Also that might’ve tilted the ship a bit especially when the rest of thecast consider it an ensemble film as appose to ” we’re in a movie with Mel Gibson” so that was probably what killed the idea of him being in it..The last film had cameos but there was never anyone in it who were getting paid more than anyone else or had more lines than anyone else. Most everyone in the film were fairly new act or recent actors-no huge stars, and that kept everything balanced..Even Mike Tyson who was the major cameo weasn’t breaking the movies budget.

  5. Nesson is better

    • Oh you guys know what i mean..

  6. Karma’s a b**** isn’t it Mel?

  7. Mel cameo would have rocked. Neeson? BORING….. Anyway, the first movie, like both Zach and Bradley was seriously over-rated.

  8. I like Neeson but Gibson would have made for a great cameo. The movie it’s self is twisted and perverted, perfect for a Gibson cameo. Would have made a good crazy guy lol.

  9. Come On, Mel Gibson is a scum (as a human being) Liam Neeson it’s a fantastic actor and a nice guy.

    • So I take it you know them both personally.

      • Actually yeah…..no not really, but what the hell dude? Haven’t you heard all the things that Mel Gibson have done and said? And when have you heard something negative about Liam Neeson? That’s why I wrote that, you don’t need to know them, why? mmm maybe because they are famous people?

        • Jokers joking calm down :)

  10. Would’ve been hilarious to have seen Mel in the movie act like the South Park version of him:
“I won’t tell you where I keep my money! You can torture me all you want but you’ll never get your ticket money back! Do your worst…I can take it!”

  11. Oh so people in the cast have no problem with having a man who is a convicted rapist, bit a man’s ear off, and all around psycho in a movie with them but a guy who gets drunk and says some crazy things is too much for them to handle? b*******, people need to get over themselves.

I love Neeson, but Gibson would have been perfect for that role.

    • Absolutely right!

  12. Boo, this sucks. I’m so sick of Liam Neeson. I dont want Ra’s Al Guhl in Batman 3 because of him.

  13. If Neeson does a cameo parodying his character from Taken, it could still be funny.

  14. I think the cast and crew of Hangover is unreasonable to hate Mel Gibson.Mel Gibson deserve a chance to redeem himself, why when Adam Sandler insult caucasion in his movie people loved him?,Why when Roman Polanski raped an innocent girl everyone backed him up and demand he be released from prison?
Or is Hollywood now days are not being professional?

    • if that’s the case everything person you yourself dislike and hate can be considered unreasonable. Gibson expressed his views and people reacted to it, just like not every one is backing Polanski and Im sure people are offended by sandler, are they unreasonable for their dislike of these two people as well or could you find no better way to say give mel gibson a chance?

  15. Neeson has no comedic talent, he always looks so glum!

Mel on the other hand is nutty, look at all Leathal Weapons!
He would have been perfect for H2!

    P.S. I will not be seing H2!
