Yesterday I wrote about the first images hitting the net from the Universal Pictures production of Battleship which featured two of its main cast members, Taylor Kitsch and Rihanna, in Navy uniform on set in Hawaii. The main criticism coming from the film’s production thus far, aside from that fact that it’s based on the board game but with aliens, is that of some of its young and relatively inexperienced cast.
Today, Universal returns fire with the news that Liam Neeson has joined the cast of Battleship, bringing in some veteran leadership as both an actor and with his character in the film.
Neeson will play Admiral Shane of the USS John Paul Jones and if you’re wondering how all of the other characters fit together, they more than just serve together on the same ship; Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) plays Hopper, an officer engaged to Brooklyn Decker’s character, Sam, who happens to be the daughter of Admiral Shane. It’s a Naval family!
If that’s not all, Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood) is Hopper’s older brother but he commands another ship, the USS Samson, for which Rihanna’s character Lt. Raikes also serves as a weapons specialist.
As for the story of the Battleship movie, very loosely based on the board game, if at all, the movie will follow human Naval forces as they encounter alien spaceships landed in our ocean. The aliens are stuck with a damaged vessel and alien-human naval warfare ensues.
From what we know of the aliens from early reports, they’re called “The Regents” and are black in color with legs similar to that of a water spider. Now that we know our principal cast a little better, I hope we get to see come concept art of the aliens and their vessels.
Battleship is directed by Peter Berg (Hancock) and will hit theaters May 18, 2012.

From crap like ‘A-Team’ to a film about the Navy battling aliens. I think Neesn needs to fire his agent.
The A-Team was one of the summer’s best movies for me.
I also dig Skarsgard and Kitsch – this could be crazy fun – All we know so far is humans fighting aliens at sea.

I love Liam, but I’m starting to think the guy will just sign up for anything good or not. He needs higher standards he is to talented to have such low standards. Crap like the A Team to Battleship and Clash of the Titans.

The A Team was the cinematic equivalent of a super model, nice toblook at for a while, but you no deep down there is nothing between the ears at all.
I have watched it once, I enjoyed parts of it, I have no intention of watching it again. They didn’t even use the theme tune!!!

Liam will be good in anything, but I don’t have high hopes for the rest of this movie.
a team was fun,story was not terrible, but this is very much below liam.
He won’t be the only A-list celeb in the cast.

True that 790….Liam really is still in mourning from his Wife’s tragic death, and while Clash was just terrible, he started shooting 2 weeks after her death. His kids really encouraged him to keep working and it has to be the reason, he was not the same in the last films. Now that Liam has been cast, I am in!
