After his critical and financial success with Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island comes news that Leonardo DiCaprio is now attached to star in the long-gestating thriller Prisoners for Alcon Entertainment.

The film has seen a revolving door of talent since it was first announced last year. Bryan Singer and Anton Fuqua both flirted with directing the film and Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale were at one point both set to star in the film that is being pitched as Taken meets Mystic River.

According to Deadline:

“DiCaprio wants to play a small-town carpenter who takes matters into his own hands when his daughter and her friend are kidnapped.”

The producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson  had hoped to start shooting Aaron Guzikowski’s script  this month for an October release date (the run up to awards season) but it looks like they’ll have to wait a while longer, as it’s believed that DiCaprio will fit another film into his schedule before he takes Prisoners.

What is worth noting is that DiCaprio’s involvement in the project depends on the director of the film, and the former child star is very fussy about who directs him. In recent years he has worked with Scorcese (four times including the just-released Shutter Island), Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Sam Mendes, Ed Zwick and Christopher Nolan for the forthcoming Inception. It has to be said that that’s a pretty impressive list of names, with Zwick probably being the exception (but I’m sure many of you will disagree). Oh, and if you also throw the names James Cameron and Woody Allen into the mix, it makes DiCarprio’s resume even more impressive.

It’ll be interesting to see who finally gets to direct the project. Might the Titanic star want to re-team with Scorsese for yet another thriller? After all the duo have had a pretty impressive run so far.

It could be that DiCaprio leaves the project like Wahlberg, Bale, Singer and Fuqua before him!

  1. Just a little tip. The movie that could be before Prisoners is The Beautiful and the Damned starring Keira Knightley. It stars shooting in March and DiCaprio's name has been attached.
