Despite the recent surprisingly early end of another major “toys to life” franchise in Disney Infinity, the similarly-themed LEGO Dimensions series seems to have no intention of slowing down. The line – which involves specially-branded LEGO figures that can interact with video game consoles through a “portal” – is gearing up for another big wave of new releases.
Included in the new releases are characters from popular movie and TV franchises like the Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them, Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time and Sony’s new Ghostbusters. Now, a new trailer teases these character releases among others.
LEGO released the trailer (above) teasing some of the surprising new additions to the Lego family in advance of the upcoming E3 Convention. The trailer features a spotlight, somewhat expectedly, on fan-favorite returning characters from The Lego Movie, but, the video also reveals several unexpected new additions based on older and more obscure properties sure to catch the eyes of devoted pop-culture junkies.
Check out the full list of new characters expected to be added to LEGO Dimensions:
LEGO Dimensions packs based on 16 new entertainment properties will begin launching on September 27, 2016 with the Ghostbusters Story Pack, Adventure Time and Mission: Impossible Level Packs, Harry Potter and Adventure Time Team Packs, and The A-Team Fun Pack. Additional expansion packs based on other highly anticipated films Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The LEGO® Batman Movie and wildly popular properties The Goonies, Sonic The Hedgehog, Teen Titans Go!, LEGO® City Undercover, Knight Rider, The Powerpuff Girls, Gremlins, Beetlejuice and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial will be released in product waves stretching into summer of next year.
Several of the newly-released packs will also expand the types of gameplay available to players, including the introduction of “Battle Arenas” and four-player local multiplayer options via split screen – the first time a LEGO-branded gaming property has featured such. It’s also clear, from the trailer and press, that despite ongoing fan controversy about its production, LEGO is expecting the new Ghostbusters to be a big hit, and has made its association with Dimensions‘ second year a major focus:
The Ghostbusters Story Pack, based on the upcoming film, will provide a complete movie-based gameplay experience with six puzzle-packed levels and new LEGO Gateway bricks that allow players to build Zhu’s Chinese Restaurant atop the LEGO Toy Pad. It will also come with a buildable Abby Yates LEGO minifigure with Proton Blaster and 3-in-1 buildable Ecto-1 which can be rebuilt into the Ectozer and The PerfEcto. The pack unlocks “Rip,” a new Toy Pad mode allowing players to tear open an alternate universe. In this mirror world, players have the ability to solve puzzles and affect objects and other items in the primary universe. And like all gold-tag minifigures purchased, Abby Yates provides access to a new themed Adventure World with its own unique Battle Arena.
Still, beyond the new Ghostbusters characters to be featured in LEGO Dimensions, the a number of other beloved pop culture characters will be among the releases as well. However, with the releases not beginning until Fall 2016 and planned to be rolled over the course of months, it may be some time before fans can use their favorite pop culture characters.
LEGO Dimensions packs will begin launching on September 27th, 2016.
