When Legends of Tomorrow season 1 premiered on The CW early in 2016, the time travel ensemble series featured a combination of characters from fellow DC series Arrow and The Flash along with new heroes. However, over the course of season 1, the Waverider crew lost Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) — who sacrificed himself in the penultimate episode — as well as the duo of Hawkman (Falk Hentschel) and Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée), though the former wasn’t a staple of the team.
Further shaking up the team in season 2, Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) mysteriously vanished and the crew gained two new members in Amaya Jiwe (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) and Nate Heywood (Nick Zano). Additionally Legends of Tomorrow has been slowly introducing the show’s take on the Legion of Doom, which will assemble villains from Arrow and The Flash, including one familiar face. Now, the promo for the Legends of Tomorrow midseason finale teases the return of a season 1 character.
The CW debuted the promo [above] following Legends of Tomorrow’s ‘Invasion!’ episode that concluded the network’s four-show, three-hour crossover event. The series will return with its midseason finale, ‘The Chicago Way’, which features the return of Captain Cold. However, although Snart is familiar with his friend Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell), this isn’t the version of the character that sacrificed himself for the Legends team, which will undoubtedly lead to conflict on the Waverider.
Additionally teased in the promo is Legends of Tomorrow’s burgeoning Legion of Doom. Earlier in season 2, the series saw Arrow villain Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) team up with The Flash’s evil speedster Eobard Thawne aka Reverse-Flash (Matt Letscher). Now, ‘The Chicago Way’ will add Arrow antagonist Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) to their ranks.
Although Captain Cold is expected to join the Legion of Doom at some point in season 2, and the character will make his return in ‘The Chicago Way’, it seems unlikely he’ll officially join up with the villainous group in the midseason finale. Legends of Tomorrow has been slowly developing its storyline throughout season 2 — Darhk only officially teamed up with Reverse-Flash in episode 5, after all. So, to add both Malcolm and Captain Cold to the Legion of Doom in ‘The Chicago Way’ seems extremely abrupt.
That said, all four members of the Legion assembling together would make for quite a midseason finale cliffhanger and it would allow Legends of Tomorrow to dive deeper into the team of heroes versus the team of villain dynamic after the show’s hiatus. Still, with episode 10 of season 2 titled ‘The Legion of Doom’, the series may hold off on fully assembling the group of villains until then. No matter how ‘The Chicago Way’ plays out between Captain Cold’s return and the Legion of Doom assembling, Legends of Tomorrow will surely offer fans an exciting midseason finale.
Legends of Tomorrow continues Thursday, December 8 with ‘The Chicago Way’ at 8pm on The CW.
