Legends of Tomorrow is fast heading for its finale. There are only two episodes left in the season, Mick Rory has betrayed the team, and the Legion of Doom has used the Spear of Destiny to completely rewrite reality. In tonight's episode 'Doomworld' the audience will get to see how the Legion changed things, including where the Legends are now and what they are doing. The Legends are going to have to figure out how to fix reality and destroy the spear - though first they will have to remember their time on the Waverider to begin with.
At the end of season 1, the team was changed forever. Leonard Snart had sacrificed himself to save the rest of the Legends, and Kendra Saunders left the team with Carter Hall to try to have a normal life. The team was changed again at the beginning of the second season, when Nate Heywood and Amaya Jiwe both joined the Legends.
And now it looks like the team will be changing again. According to what executive producer Phil Klemmer told CBR at PaleyFest, there will be a few new cast members in the upcoming third season. According to Klemmer, the identities of the new characters have not been confirmed yet. But he and the other producers know who they want to use:
“We haven’t fully pitched it, but we’ve got great ideas, and hopefully the studio and network agree. But so much of the show is working well this year. You just want to play to your strengths, and keep having fun.”
Klemmer also credited the changing cast with the improved fan reviews for season 2:
“Season 1, the pilot sends you on this course. It’s like an ocean tanker — you’re not able to just flip it around. So what really helps is being able to do a clean restart. That’s something we intend to do next season, because it worked so well this past season. We added two new characters, we had two characters that sort of fell out of our orbit — obviously Wentworth (Miller) has fallen back into our orbit. That’s the wonderful thing about this show. The only thing that has to remain is the Waverider. It’s a time travel show, so the only thing that’s not going to change is that it always changes.”
The changed mission - fixing time aberrations rather than chasing down a villain - also played a huge part in the change in tone between seasons. This past season has included a number of fun locations and historical figures, including the team getting to meet Albert Einstein, George Lucas and J.R.R.Tolkien. Something else Klemmer touched on:
“In a weird way, it became the show that I think people really needed in this past year — at least it’s what I needed. When you’re writing an episode, it’s pure escapism. You can do anything you want. ‘The Right Stuff’ is my favorite movie, and last week I had an episode about the Apollo space program. Where else would I have been able to do that?"
Something to keep in mind is that before new characters joined in season 2, several characters either left or were killed at the end of season 1. So if there are going to be new team members next year, it's possible that not everyone will make it to the end this year.
