The CW’s shared DC Comics-inspired TV universe has grown in recent years to include four separate series – Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. While Arrow and Supergirl were launched in their own right, the characters on Legends of Tomorrow were largely introduced on Arrow and The Flash. As such, one of the main members of the Waverider crew in Legends of Tomorrow season 1, Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), got his start as a villain on The Flash alongside his partner in crime Mick Rory aka Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell). However, in the penultimate season 1 episode, Captain Cold sacrificed himself for the sake of his fellow team members, and Mick has been plagued by thoughts of his former partner throughout season 2.
But, for those following reports concerning The CW’s Arrowverse, it became clear Captain Cold wasn’t gone for good when Miller signed on as a regular of all four DC TV series. Then, it was confirmed Captain Cold would return to Legends of Tomorrow – but as a member of the Legion of Doom. While the villainous team has proven to be a thorn in the side of the Legends in season 2, Captain Cold has yet to join their ranks. Now, it seems that particular team up is on the horizon since Miller was spotted on the Legends of Tomorrow set.
HollywoodNorth.Buzz posted a batch of set photos in which Miller and Purcell appear to be filming a heist scene back in their old stomping grounds of Central City. Since the timing of this particular shoot aligns with The Flash and Supergirl’s musical crossover that airs on March 21st, it’s likely this scene is from the Legends of Tomorrow March 21st episode, titled ‘Fellowship of the Spear’. Take a look at the set photos:
The scene being shot in these set photos could be a flashback to Cold and Mick’s time in Central City prior to joining the Legends team. Mick’s storyline throughout season 2 has largely dealt with him struggling to accept the changes in his character due to his time with the Legends. Before joining Rip Hunter’s (Arthur Darvill) time-travel mission, he and Cold had been distrustful of others and – as the heist scene indicates – criminals. But both Cold and Mick were changed by their time with the Legends. Cold sacrificed himself and Mick has become a dependable member of the team – for the most part.
Of course, considering Cold’s relationship not only with Mick but the others as well, including Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), his return as a villain will no doubt provide for compelling emotional drama. Although the other members of the Legion of Doom – Reverse-Flash (Matt Letscher), Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough), and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) – are all unquestionably villains, Captain Cold has been more of a morally gray character, which helped to make him a fan-favorite.
So, with a different version of Captain Cold set to return to Legends of Tomorrow than the hero who sacrificed himself for his teammates, the series is gearing up for a particularly emotional turn in the finale season 2 episodes. While it’s still unclear when exactly Leonard Snart will again return to Legends of Tomorrow – after appearing in the midseason finale – these new set photos indicate he will at least be back by ‘Fellowship of the Spear’.
Legends of Tomorrow continues Tuesday, February 21 with ‘Camelot/3000’ at 9pm on The CW.
