[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Legends of Tomorrow ahead.]
Among other things, Sara and Laurel Lance will reunite on tonight’s Legends of Tomorrow season 2 finale episode, ‘Aruba’. The Legends – and the rest of the world – are currently trapped in Doomworld, an alternate reality created by the Legion of Doom using the now-destroyed Spear of Destiny. In order to save reality, the Legends have to break the number one rule of time travel: go back to a time in the past where they have already been and risk running into their past selves, in order to reclaim the spear. While that is already dangerous, they are going to have to do so without their powers and very shorthanded. Martin Stein does not remember who he really is, Rip Hunter and the Waverider have been shrunk, and Amaya has been murdered by Captain Cold.
One other thing that has been promised for awhile now, however, is the arrival of Laurel Lance on Legends of Tomorrow season 2. Ever since it was announced that Katie Cassidy would appear in ‘Aruba’ it has generally been assumed that it would be as her Earth-2 counterpart Black Siren. It looks like that assumption might not exactly be the case.
In an interview, Legends executive producer Marc Guggenheim told TVLine that the reunion between the Lance sisters is a natural one:
“It certainly happens by the design of the writers. It happens very organic to the story. It’s definitely a pivotal moment in the plot. I don’t want to spoil it. I’ll just say Katie Cassidy appears as Laurel Lance. She doesn’t appear as Black Siren or Black Canary. It’s really a reunion of sorts between the two Lance sisters.”
When asked to elaborate on whether Sara seeks Laurel out, Guggenheim was intentionally mysterious:
“Hmmm… there’s a philosophical argument to be made that she does.”
It is not clear on whether this is Earth-1 Laurel and Sara either encounters her in the past or if she is alive in Doomworld, or whether this is the Earth-2 Laurel who was last seen in the custody of ARGUS. Her return in this episode is also significant, since Katie Cassidy is returning to Arrow as a regular cast member next season. Since she is returning as Black Siren, odds are good that this will be the Earth-2 Laurel that Sara meets up with, setting up her return to Star City.
Laurel’s death has had a huge impact on Sara in Legends season 2. When the Legends learned that Damian Darhk was causing some of the time aberrations they were trying to fix, Sara had to learn to overcome her need for revenge against him in order to complete their missions. She got a bit of vengeance in the fake world The Dominators created, but it was not real and she had to walk away from a fantasy where Laurel was alive and she had killed Darhk.
The season 2 finale of Legends of Tomorrow has promised to shake up the team significantly, with quite a lot of death promised in the episode and the team having room for new characters at the start of season 3. With Amaya dead and the Legends about to break the rules, the reunion of the Lance sisters may be a moment of relief in what has been promised to be a potentially brutal adventure.
Legends of Tomorrow season 2 concludes at a new time tonight, Tuesday, April 4 with ‘Aruba’ at 8pm on The CW.
