After rounding the midway point in its first season, The CW’s latest DC comics-based series, Legends of Tomorrow is starting to catch its footing. The show took a few lumps from the critics and shed a few characters, but overall the reviews have been positive. The end of March sees Legends return as our heroes continue their quest to set things right with the timeline and bring an end to Vandal Savage’s temporal dictatorship possibilities.
As the show rounds the bend of its first season, fans worried about losing their show can at least put those fears to rest now that it’s been renewed for a season 2. They can also look forward to a likely climactic clash with brutal time master Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) in the finale – as well as a sneak peek at a DC heavyweight who could upend their already topsy-turvy world.
In his most recent edition of Ask Ausiello, a concerned Legends of Tomorrow fan chimed in questions regarding a potential casting overhaul for season 2 of Legends. Addressing the issue, he explained that news of the casting shift is far more psychological than it is physical. Apparently, one of the show’s producers had fallen victim to a Hollywood rumor mill misinterpretation. Rather than a personality reshuffling, his source says:
“Rip, Leonard, Sara et al will have been changed as people by their adventures during Season 1. Regardless of whether that’s the source of your confusion, I have it on good authority that a wholesale cast change is not at all in the cards.”
The casting news – or lack thereof – comes as good news for fans fearing the worst for Jax (Franz Drameh), Sara Lance/White Canary (Caity Lotz), Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill), and rest of the team. More intriguing still is the possible earth-shaking character addition:
“Rumor has it the final scene of Legends of Tomorrow‘s May 19 season finale will introduce a ‘beloved superhero from the DC canon’ whose mysterious agenda serves as ‘a launching off point for Season 2.’”
Naturally, this isn’t official confirmation, but if the source is correct, there are any number of possible “beloved superheroes” available. Major players from the DC film universe like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, in all likelihood, won’t be stepping off the big screen. The most likely hero to quantum leap into the show, though, is Booster Gold. Between his shared history with Hunter throughout his own comic book story arc and his featured role in the Time Masters storyline, his appearance would line up well with the temporal-shifting theme of the show. An episode of The Flash may have even laid an Easter egg leading back to Booster Gold when a Legion flight ring appeared on Earth 2.
However, BG wasn’t usually known for his enigmatic “agendas.” Other notable heroes have crossed temporal paths with Hunter and could easily hop into the timeline such as Animal Man, way-outside shot the Elongated Man, Vixen, or even Dick Grayson/Nightwing could stop by. Once again, it’s only a rumor at this point. But with unlimited possibilities of time travel, Legends of Tomorrow could explore all kinds of interesting possibilities.
Legends of Tomorrow will return with ‘Left Behind’ on March 31st, 2016 at 8pm on The CW.
