Arnold Schwarzenegger’s name alone just doesn’t sell tickets like it once did, judging by the poor ticket sales for his post-politics solo movie vehicles (The Last Stand and Sabotage); pair him with other action stars and/or a bankable property, however, and the story isn’t necessarily the same. Arnold’s teamup with Sly Stallone on Escape Plan last year made solid returns at the international box office, and his next two projects – this month’s The Expendables 3 and next year’s Terminator reboot – are likewise expected to perform well (enough) financially.

What’s next for Arnold? The Legend of Conan, assuming that all the pieces fall into place. The project is the developing third installment in the Schwarzenegger-starring Conan the Barbarian film continuity (e.g. not including the 2011 reboot with Jason Momoa). Progress has been slow, but steady, in the time since when screenwriter/producer Chris Morgan (the Fast and the Furious franchise) pitched a story idea for the film that got Universal’s attention.

Screenwriter Andrea Berloff – who penned Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center drama and the upcoming N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton – was first reported to be actively putting together a Legend of Conan script close to a year ago. Conan the Barbarian franchise producer Fredrik Malmberg recently told The Arnold Fans that the Legend of Conan screenplay is currently being polished, before it’s handed over to studio heads in September; if all goes well, filming will thereafter get underway by Spring 2015.

Things could change, but Malmberg also informed TAF that he doesn’t feel Legend of Conan necessarily needs to be a summer movie release. Rather, it could be released around the winter holiday season – a release frame that has served other fantasy epic properties well (see: Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth films), and will be the launch pad for new installments in such sci-fi blockbusters franchises as Star Wars and Avatar, in the years ahead. You can read Malmberg’s actual statement, below.

“… It’s up to Universal to set the date for ['The Legend of Conan'] to be released but personally, I don’t think it has to be a summer movie. I think there’s plenty of examples of big event movies being released in the winter like the Matrix movies and The Lord of the Rings. I can see this being a winter movie as well as a summer movie. The iconic role of Arnold as Conan is so big that it can be year round.”

The Conan the Barbarian property has a mixed box office record; the 2011 reboot, for example, grossed $49 million worldwide on a $90 million budget. However, combine that brand with Schwarzenegger and, as mentioned before, the final result should be able to find a decent-sized audience. Now if the project can secure an accomplished director to serve as helmsman, it’ll be one step closer to becoming both a reality and something special, in the context of Arnold’s general filmography.

We’ll bring you more information on The Legend of Conan as it becomes available.

  1. Let’s hope it’s as good as the first one,The Barbarian.

    • This is the one Arnold movie, above all others, that I want to see. If it had been his first movie back, I feel his return might have been more successful. I believe Terminator Genesis will make money, but Legend of Conan will be a certified hit…if done right.

      • I agree, fantasy is huge at the moment, this could be Arnies Unforgiven.

  2. *more seasoned Conan

  3. I hope this happens… I love Mamoa, but that Conan remake was terrabad… The best part was when he was a kid in the beginning of the movie.

  4. No way they release it in the summer. If they start filming in the sping and shoot for a summer release it will get destroyed during the summer of 2016. There are too many huge releases coming out for today’s Arnold to compete with.

  5. Fingers definitely crossed for this to happen. I was worried it would end up falling apart based on Arnold recent returns. Pumped to see king Conan’s “troubled brow”

  6. If this movie is like the original Conan the Barbarian, rated R, then it could do very well opposite Star Wars. The original Conan movie was epic, dark and had a lot of great moments and performances.

“I am Subotai! Thief, archer. I am Hyrkanian, of the Great Order of Kerlit.”
    “What are you doing here?”
    “Dinner for wolves.”

    • Crom laughs at your Four Winds.

  7. More Conan, please! I’ve tried reading the books, but just couldn’t get through them. What made Conan great was the writer/director John Milius as much as it was Schwatzvergnugen.

    • I’m pretty sure Oliver Stone had more to do with the writing on the 1982 Conan then John Milius.

      • Oliver Stone, really? I’m a big Oliver Stone fan (pre-JFK). Midnight Express and Salvador are both on my desert island list (if the desert island has a DVD player and electricity).

        • Nonsense. How could you live on a desert island without Blu-ray and 3D glasses?

      • For the general story and plot, maybe, but the unforgettable lines and dialogue from the movie were pure Milius.

      • The color pallet, soundtrack and cinematography were excellent in the original film. Those all belong to Milius.

    • Try reading the comics from Darkhorse… They are really good…

      • Comics, I don’t know. I tried the original books by Robert E. Howard and the writing was so…bad…off the wall…that I couldn’t finish them. I haven’t read a comic book (or graphic novel) since Sgt. Rock in 1978.

        • You just lost what very little credibility you had.

          • I agree. Robert E. Howard was an amazing writer. He could paint a picture in your head so fully, but in so few words, as well.

  8. He dos not need the make movie to make money any more. He can now do films because he finds the film interesting or fun to do.

  9. Bout damn time!

I predicted that the “reboot” would fail hard and they should have gone this route all along. Reboots as a general rule fail which is why I do not understand why Hollywood keeps trying them! Hollywood is kind of like Bart Simpson grabbing the cupcake and getting a shock.

At least the Hamster learned after one shock :P

  10. Too bad that the brilliant writer/director of the original film John Milius had a stroke which prevented him from being in contention as the director on this. He practically lived to make this film though to be fair when the studio decided to go the route that they did (By making the second film with Grace Jones) rather than his proposed trilogy for the character he had practically given up all hope of ever seeing that great vision (Which was only hinted at in the climax of the original film) realized. Still on a commentary track for the original film which Milius did with Schwarzenegger prior to his debilitating stroke it was said several times by Milius that they should get together and make another Conan film to which Arnold (Although perhaps just being polite as he was in the midst of his political career at the time & no doubt didn’t see a return to film making anytime soon) agreed to jovially. I think that a lot of Conan fans will be thinking “What might have been?” after seeing this new one realized.

    • that doesn’t mean it will be bad but I get your point.Besides I think{form reading online} that Arnie might be re-uniting with director Paul Verhoeven,a better director,so things are not that bad.

      • To me, Conan was the role Arnold was born to play. Whether or not this movie is good depends entirely on the story. Please make it dark, with little to no humor.

  11. Awesome! I always thought this guy Conan was a better late night host than Jay Leno.Wait, this is the same guy right?

    • Hey what’s going on? Usually, someone comes along and says something but today it looks empty. O well maybe not today.

    • Booooo… Boo Wendy… Booooo… Boo Wendy Testaburger.

      • Cartman, how did you find me?! I thought you were busy planning to break into Kyle’s house!

  12. It’s a real shame Milius cannot direct. He got the first one just right, the tone, action and violence, plus the less is more approach to Arnie talking. That first one is a fantasy masterpiece,it had little in the way of special FX,but managed to create a believable world, from page to screen, one of the best adaptations of an authors work ever.

  13. I am a lifelong Conan fan. At a very young age (4 yrs) my parents allowed me to rent the second Schwarzenegger film (the Destroyer). I was hooked instantly. When I was around 10yrs I was gifted the twelve collected Howard Conan pocketbooks. I fell in love with them as well.

The stories and Schwarzenegger films are quite different. I love each of them. My favorite Conan stories are the ones about his later years as King of Aquilonia. These were the stories that were written from Howard’s remaining notes after his death. I love Howard’s Imagination and descriptions, but, as a previous poster mentioned, his writing structure is difficult to read.

Conan’s appeal for me is his abnormally high intelligence. He considers the world profoundly, but never feels burdened by it. He simultaneously lives in the moment while considering the vastness of the universe. He is a realist and a philosopher, a taker and a provider, a slayer and a savior, a free spirit with considered wisdom. These traits really come through in the later stories and I pray that this film can capture the nuances appropriately. When he becomes King he has two defining leadership traits. He is a libertarian who promotes vast personal freedoms and he ensures a large and advanced military. These concepts held great appeal for me even before I knew what a libertarian was.

I didn’t like the 2011 reboot. It wasn’t Mamoa’s fault though. It was the weak writing and storytelling (and costuming). Someone recommended the Dark Horse comics, but they were the inspiration for the reboot and I find they lack the soul of the original stories. The best iteration in my opinion are the Savage Sword Magazines of the seventies. I read most of those. They took the original Howard stories and translated them into a mature comic book. Many people decry the cartoonish He-Man-esque appearance of the Savage Sword’s Conan. I think it fits into the spectacle of the stories.

–Side Note: The entire He-Man premise came from the toys that were made for the original Milius film. When the toy company found out the film would be hard R they had to find a way to recoup their investment. They created the He-Man concept and managed to produce a television series to promote the toy line and found immense success.

    • Perfectly summed up the character of Conan right there. I too have been a lifelong fan of the Conan franchise from books to comics to crappy cartoon series and the movies even the poor showing of the reboot.

Arnold was the definitive Conan on screen however it didnt quite get his intellectual side that is evident in the books. Which is a shame but non the less Arnie was an awesome force on the screen

      • I agree. If the script is done right, this could be the comeback film that he has been hoping for. I can’t wait!

      • Lol. I din’t want to mention the Conan Cartoon… But, I’ve seen every episode and had every action figure as a kid. I think you know you’re a super-fan when you are eager to consume even the lame, ridiculous adaptations.

I think Arnold/Milius nailed the presence of Conan. I think that is why he appeals to Conan fans. I do think Vladimir Kulich’s role in 13th Warrior(1999) should have immediately lead to him starring in a King Conan movie in 2000/01. I hope he can play a role in this film.

  14. They should stick to the source material..it is like talking about The Lord of The Rings without using Tolkien’s books! It drives me mental when people go on and on about the cartoons/films/comics and ignore that Robert E. Howard was the man behind it all.

The film should follow Conan The Conqueror:

It takes place , during his reign as King of Aquilonia, and follows a plot by a group of conspirators to depose him in favor of Valerius, heir to Conan’s predecessor Numedides, whom he had slain to gain the throne. To accomplish this they resort to necromancy, resurrecting Xaltotun, an ancient sorcerer from the pre-Hyborian empire of Acheron. With his aid the Aquilonian army is defeated by that of the rival kingdom of Nemedia and occupied. Conan, captured, is slated for execution until the sympathetic slave girl Zenobia risks her life to free him.

Conan’s quest to retrieve the Heart of Ahriman in order to defeat the wizard and regain his throne takes him through all the lands of Hyboria.

After his eventual triumph he vows to make Zenobia his queen.

    Conan The Conquerer

    • That sounds like a good choice, but it might need to be done as two movies. Film them back to back. No trilogy with too much padding. Keep it lean.

    • Also known as ‘Hour of the Dragon’ when Howard published it. I agree completely. Not only, imho, the best story Howard wrote, but the most adaptable to film. Conan must use several of his skills to win in the end. The political intrigue, Love story(not great, but better than all except belit), and sorcerer antagonist make this the perfect Conan story.

I would also like to see the four part ‘Conan of Aquilonia’ adapted afterwards. It meant so much that {SPOILERS!} in the end, Crom comes to Conan’s defense when Conan is being killed by the embodiment of Set. That climax deserves the big screen.

  15. Well that story was aslo been told in Kull The Coqueror 1997 movie were the events and character were ex-changed.That movie originaly was mean to be Conan 3 (Conan the Conqueror) but Raphaela de Lorentis chnaged it becuse Arnold was not going to do it wthout his Pal John Milius runing the show.so the Original Script was the Hour of the Dragon the story you are trying to refer about.Charles Wdwar Pogue script was much darker and violent was prefectly written for Conan 3, i dspite Arnold turning the back on it Rephaela had to make dessitions to chnage the script and to lighten it up, so instread they made Kull the conquero and satrt was Kevin Sorbo. The moveis is bette then mao Cona 2011, and it doen’t take to seriously but the story is way better and has inetrsting locations, they used real casle in Slovacia and they shpt he movie in Croatio for the harbour and ship battles scenes.
I still consider it entertaining and is beter then Conan 2011.

Si i suggest for die hard fans can rewind and have a glipse of Kull the Conqueror before making ideas what King Conan might look like, but with more drama and dramatic and less fantasy element.

They should make it with less fantasy elements but more predominated by dramatic revenge stroy driven, like Odysseus, then it will work.
I’m affraid Paul Verhoven is in pre-production on Jesus of Nezareth, he won’t be able to run this epic.
However there need to be made wise search for a Directors, so can be a bluckbuster.
They have plenty of time to do so if they wan’t to satrt on spring.
Does any one know what location they arer still using to shoot the movie?

  16. Please let this be good. It would be great to see him in something that is actually good and no 1 at the box office.

  17. I’ve been looking forward to seeing King Conan like those awesome stills in the after-credits scenes of Conan on a throne, since I was kid.

Let’s hope John Milius gets his hands into this as well for some sweet scripting.

  18. They got another new screenwriter. Looks like production could be pushed back again. After Genisys, bomb would anyone be interested in taking a chance on Arnhold?

  19. Guys really, ok i recognise that first movies with Arnold are cult classics BUT, i liked better the way Jason played Conan as a CHARACTER. And i mean that he was really close to Conan we know from R.E.Howards books and stories!

If they manage to combine those 2 things, we will have a GREAT movie!

But i dont think Arnold can get so close to Conan as a character. Will be good to see Arnold as King Conan and another actor as young Conan.
