pike greenwood Last Major Star Trek Character Has Been Cast: Captain PikeBruce Greenwood has been cast in the last remaining major role in Star Trek 11: Captain Christopher Pike. He will be captain of the USS Enterprise with Spock as his second in command before Captain Kirk takes charge of the NCC-1701.

I think Greenwood is a great choice: He’s played the role of a leader very effectively in the past and he looks close enough for purposes of the film and considering Pike is not someone hard core fans will go nuts over if the actor doesn’t look like his twin brother. Speaking of the fans, one thing that has been pointed out is that Captain Robert April was actually the first commander of the original Enterprise, not Captain Pike. I don’t know if Abrams and crew will just change that for purposes of the film, gloss over it or what. Personally it’s not that big a deal to me.

Filming on Star Trek began yesterday and the film is slated to open on Christmas Day 2008.

  1. Plus he’s Canadian and we Canadians are just meant to command starships! ;)

  2. I was one of the people commenting on Robert April being the first person to command the Enterprise. Way I see it, they don’t need to address this or dismiss it, just simply don’t refer to Pike as the first captain, problem solved.

  3. That’s true, unless they (as has been indicated) show the Enterprise on her maiden voyage.

  4. Oh dear, I kinda missed that little detail. Umm, ok you have me there, I can’t really explain a way out of that. I guess they are just going to pretend ol’ Robert April didn’t exist.

  5. They could also have a differnt class of Enterprise that Cap April commanded. Like the NX-02A??
Well I guess if I can’t talk Abhrams out of his redux version,,, yea ok Bruce Greenwood is fine to play Pike.
He’s a great actor anyway. I’ve allways liked him even though he’s Canadian.
By the way, any Aliens out there. Canadians taste better the us Americans. Just FYi.

  6. Just another little sci-fi tid bit, I just noticed the number attached to this post “”

Star Wars reference in a post about Star Trek? Uh oh, What times the lynch mob due? :P

  7. OK. What am I missing? I remember wayyyyy back in the ‘beginnin’ and Capt Pike was before Kirk. But what about Capt Archer? Isn’t that the Enterprise he’s commanding (I miss that show real bad!)?

If it is the Enterprise, and if that’s 100 years before Kirk, then how can Pike be the FIRST captain? What am I missing? Help

  8. The ship on the show you’re talking about is the Enterprise NX-01. This ship is the Constitution Class NCC-1701.

  9. Vic,
OK. So the class of ship made the difference. Makes sense. Appreciate the response….though I still miss Enterprise! I know it never really got started until near the end, but to me, I blame B&B, not the actors or the show itself….and certainly not the ship! :)

  10. When they decided to make Archers ship the Enterprise THATS when they messed up the continuity with April being the first Cap. Since they did this the cannon is displaced.
It was upsetting to see the ship design was lifted from a Ds9, class starship called the Akira. Class..
Turn it upside down whalla the Enterprise NX-01.
Pike, the first Cap or April? I think these details are a very small and won’t be addressed in the film.

  11. I agree. Minor detail, not a concern for them trying to bring in new fans.

I also agree about the NX-01 design… WAY too advanced IMHO. Should have been more like the first starship design in Stargate SG-1: blocky and chunky.

  12. Hey Hirogen, I think you mean THX-1138 the original George Lucas film.
I don’t think that was a Star Wars film.
Hey Vic wow we agree on 2 topics in the same post.
    its been a while…
If this was Halo3 I would get an achievement.
Here I go ruining the moment, I havnt seen the stagate ships your refering too because that show struck me as unwatchable…
But yeah the first Enterprise should have looked alot like the Constitution class but smaller around Voyagers size.
*footnote: season4 of Enterprise is a must see!

  13. greenwood is a fine choice and a good sign IMO

  14. Umm, I never said it was a Star Wars film, as I’m fully aware that it isn’t and that its a George Lucas film. I just assumed people people that care would know that and that usually referring to anything Star Wars related usually stirs the pot when it comes to Trek fans. Personally I am into both, which is why I threw the 1138 reference out there to begin with.

  15. True Hirogen but you did say reference.
To a Star Wars geekoid like myself I was compelled by the dark side to point this out for all to see. Hahaa

    Jk with ya, Hirogen.

  16. Casting notes:
I wouldn’t be too shocked to see some big star cameos in this film. There giving us this casting info for a reason. Setting us up to be startled at a few huge A-listers.
    This is Abrhams style…
Any paramount security guards out there seen Cruise or Hanks come thru the gates? If so please drop a line.

If you don’t want to use your real name you can leave an Alias* like “lord garth formerly known as ishtar” or something like that.
    the trek world needs answers!

  17. Expect to see in the film A-list stars that we never hear about in the news.
I would bet around 5 big names that will be surprise cameos.
