Kurtzman & Orci Producing Magical Heist Film ‘Now You See Me’

Two of the most in-demand writers and producers in Hollywood right now are Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers of hits like Star Trek, Transformers 1&2 and the sci-fi TV series Fringe.

The writer/producer team currently have some major projects in development, including Star Trek 2 (which they’re writing with Lost‘s Damon Lindelof), the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys & Aliens, season 3 of Fringe and the modern version of Hawaii Five-O (amongst others).

However, just because they’ve already got a lot of work lined up doesn’t mean they’ve stopped looking for more. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the Kurtzman/Orci team will produce a film called Now You See Me, based on a spec script by Boaz Yakin and Edward Ricourt.

Yakin directed the Denzel Washington sports biopic Remember the Titans and most recently co-wrote the video game movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. He will next direct the Jason Statham thriller,¬†Safe, from a script he wrote.¬†Ricourt is a member of Marvel Studios’ Writing Program and he wrote the script for Year 12, which is being developed at Paramount Pictures. The duo first worked together on the horror Abraham’s Daughter.

Kurtzman and Orci will produce Now You See Me along with Bobby Cohen through their banner Paper Products. The spec script was picked up by Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the phenomenally successful Twilight Saga.

As you may have guessed from the title, Now You See Me has a magic element to it. However, the plot synopsis reveals the art to be employed in a unique way:

“[The story] pits a crack FBI squad in a game of cat-and-mouse against a super-team of the world’s greatest illusionists, who pull off a series of daring bank heists during their performances, showering the profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law.”

Wow, that sounds like one of the most interesting and unique plots I’ve heard in a while. Although I immediately thought of a cross between The Prestige and Inside Man (mixed with a bit of Catch Me If You Can) I imagine it will be its own beast. I love bank heist movies and can’t wait to find out how the magic/illusionist angle is employed.

What do you think of the plot of Now You See Me? Does Kurtzman and Orci’s involvement heighten your interest in the project?
