Kurt Russell Rejects ‘The Expendables’

A lot of people are excited by Sylvester Stallone’s forthcoming action epic The Expendables. With a supporting cast of Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture, Eric Roberts and even Arnold Schwarzenegger, the film is a must see for fans of the action genre – in particular pre-CGI action.

It recently came to light that Jean-Claude Van Damme had rejected a role in the film and now come reports that Sly’s Tango and Cash co-star Kurt Russell has also turned down an offer to join the ensemble cast.

The Rocky star told Stallone Zone:

‘’I know that many people on the site have asked for Kurt Russell. I asked for him too. Actually, I was taken aback when asked to put the request in a letter and send it to his agent. Subsequently, I was called back by the agent several days later after refusing to send a letter and he said Kurt Russell is not interested in ‘ensemble acting’ at this time. So, people, I came, I saw, I failed”.

Now, Clint Morris at Moviehole believes that this is simply a case of Russell’s agent not relaying the message – it certainly reeks of that. It wouldn’t be the first time that a good offer wasn’t relayed to an actor: James Woods famously fired his agent when he wasn’t shown the script to Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs.

However, it could simply be the case that Russell isn’t interested in the movie. A decade ago following the release of Soldier he stated that his muscle bound action days were over and I’d imagine that to star in The Expendables he’d need to be in pretty good shape and at 58 maybe he sees hitting the gym as too much work.

Could Russell perhaps be playing Marvel-style hardball because he wants a solid paycheck and good billing in the ensemble film? Or could Sly be toying with us and Russell actually has a cameo in the film? After all he can’t leave us without any surprises, can he?

We will find out when The Expendables opens on April 23, 2010.

  1. Adding Russell would be sweet, but I think getting Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura would be even better!! Add Mr. T to that equation and you’ll have every 40 yr old man in the country at that film! LOL!

  2. oscar,

    i agree

  3. Listening to him talk to John Carpenter on one of their movies, he talks about being an action hero. He said he felt he was too old to do it and he wouldn’t want to see it. He wanted younger men to take up the action roles of now (reckon this was on the commentary for Escape From New York – which was some years ago too)

So it would make sense that he wouldn’t want an action role. He spoke of how tough it was doing Soldier.

Then again, after being beaten up by a group of girls, maybe he’s too ashamed. ;)

Would love to have him in it. Especially if he played someone who liked to laugh. :D

  4. He doesn’t have to play an action role, he could be some type of General or something. I can understand his reasoning, him knocking on 60.

  5. Yah, I wouldn’t have minded him being in it in a non-action capacity. I like him as an actor, so having him in would have been a plus.

  6. The more I hear about all these cast members turning down parts and them not being replaced ( JCVD, Russel )

How many characters are, themselves, expendable? This movie is becoming silly.

  7. i still think kurt should be nick fury

  8. No, no, no, no, no! Kurt Russell is NOT close to turning 60. He’s still only 35.

    Isn’t he?

    Dammit I’m getting freaking old…

  9. Russell looked pretty good in Poseidon. He really would have elevated the film but my gut feeling is, he probably thought he was above the ensemble thing with this group of guys.

  10. Kurt Russell would have been a kickass Nick Fury, but I think that would be considered an action role. There’s a chance he’s just really really out of shape and doesn’t feel like getting into shape for the film. Now I’m not saying buff and ready for action, but maybe he has a big pot belly that he doesn’t want everyone to see…

  11. What is Kurts next film?

  12. In all honesty, this movie looks like a bomb in the making. It certainly doeesn’t interest me and when I look at the cast….it seems a bad joke. I may be wrong. I like a number of Stallone’s movies but this just looks like “It’s a Mad, Mad World” on HGH.

    just saying

  13. Dayumn, Woods would have been nice in Reservoir Dogs.

  14. That’s too bad he won’t be in it. But then what would his role be anyway? There’s so many guys in the movie already, what kind of airtime are they going to get? This is either going to be one really long movie or their roles will be so irrelevant that it hardly makes sense they are even in the movie. Are they just putting all these guys in as real expendables?

As in they’re just going to die in various explosions, etc.? But then you won’t even really see the guy die in the explosion, etc. because it’s going to be PG-13 anyway.

I agree with Rob, this movie is looking like it might just be a bomb in the making. Although that won’t stop me from watching it lol.

  15. This film will not bomb! Have faith in Stallone! There are only 5 Expendables last I remember, all the other cast members have bit parts in the film. Austin and Trejo are bad guys, Roberts is more like a Government official, same with Carpenter. This will not bomb. Well it will bomb, it will bomb everything in 2010 away!!!
Marvel feared The Expendables that is why they pushed their dates!

  16. @ Mandarr, I’ve seen plenty of PG13 movies with plenty of people dying in explosions…

  17. Dear Sly, call Willis – You, Arnie and Bruce are the best action heroes ever :-)

  18. @Marko

Minus martial arts films … I agree.

  19. Donnie Yen!!! lol. Man, that would be crazy, Bruce Willis, Arnold, and Sly all in one movie. I think film projectors around the country will explode when they try to load this film. Even the digital ones… :-D

  20. Needs Hulk Hogan

  21. How do we know or not if this is just all hype? To get people talking about the film more, what if Sly already has this suprise actor on board… Cause honestly all this show and grab an actor in is usually under the radar ya know. Regardless what happens, I’m sure it’s going to be great! Sly has turned into quite the director, he knows how to capture the best angles and views, plus his actions sequences are bad a**… I assume they are only going to get better

  22. expendables trailor

  23. kurt needs to do an action film again. he should be in a sequel to expendables.

  24. I miss kurt Russell and his movies. He should do a sequel to escape from New York, tango and cash, soldier, tequila sunrise, captain Ron, stargaze, big trouble in little china, etc.

  25. Kurt should do expendables 3 and other good action films with good action actors. He should do more movies like soldier, escape from New York, etc.

  26. kurt if you are listening fire your agent and do expendables 3 not just for the action fans or for the money do it for yourself and your fellow action stars of your caliber.

    • Exactly

  27. kurt you are a great actor if you can’t do expendables 3, do expendables 4.

  28. Expandables 3 will kick but critics suck usa will make sure selvester stallone movie is number one.

  29. Expandables 3 will be #1 selvester stallone #1 megan.
