The cuddly but deadly black and white star of Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda, Po (voice of Jack Black), will be back and ready for more (cartoonish) martial arts action next summer in Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom.

An official synopsis for Kung Fu Panda 2 was unveiled this past weekend, along with a teaser trailer, which moviegoers who checked out Dreamworks' latest animated pic, Megamind, may have gotten to watch in all its big screen, 3D glory.

Kaboom of Doom finds The Dragon Warrior himself, Po, working alongside the Furious Five - Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Crane (David Cross) - and his master, Shifu (Dustin Hoffman), to defend the Valley of Peace against a villainous figure (Gary Oldman) who intends to wreck havoc via the titular weapon. Lots of slo-mo fight sequences and fat panda jokes will likely ensue thereafter.

2008's Kung Fu Panda was a fun, fast-paced adventure for the whole family, which paid homage to classic Kung Fu cinema and demonstrated Black's talent for voice work (something he might want to stick with doing more often - see the Gulliver's Travels Trailer #2 for proof). We have high hopes that the sequel will be of a similar vein.

While the Kaboom of Doom teaser doesn't contain any actual footage from the followup, the quality of animation looks to be an improvement from the 2008 film. Computer animated fare generally looks decent in the third dimension and the Kung Fu Panda sequel should be no exception - especially since it'll feature a number of scenes in which characters leap and fly through the air (and off the screen, in 3D).

Next summer will mark the arrival of two 3D followups to successful animated pics from years past (Kaboom of Doom and Cars 2). We'll have to wait and see which one turns out to be the more popular title at the box office. Anyone care to wager a guess?

Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom arrives in 2D and 3D theaters in the U.S. on May 27th, 2011.
