Universal started making serious plans for a sequel to Bridesmaids shortly after the female-centric comedy became both a big financial and critical hit last summer. However, the new year also brought word that leading lady and co-writer Kristen Wiig wasn’t interested in working on Bridesmaids 2 – and that the project could very well move ahead without her.
Bridesmaids producer Judd Apatow recently mentioned that a second installment without Wiig, in all liklihood, will not happen. Add to that fresh confirmation from the SNL alumnus herself that she’s not planning to make a second trip down the aisle, and it sounds like this comedy sequel has officially been dropped into development hell.
Similarly, Wiig had the following to offer E! Online, with regards to whether or not she and Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo had any plans to collaborate again on a followup:
“We’re not planning on doing one. We had a special time making the first one, but we’re really excited to try something else. It’s going to be a little bit of a different tone, but it’s going to be a comedy, for sure.”
All things considered, that’s probably for the best. Bridesmaids was quite the entertaining mashup of chick flick elements and raunchy humor (it just barely missed making it onto our Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2011 list) but it would have been hard for Wiig and Co. to bottle lightning a second time, with similar success.
Chances are good that, had Wiig and Mumolo been forced to work on the sequel despite their indifference, we would have ended up with a Bridesmaids 2 that just recycles the formula and approach of its predecessor (a la The Hangover Part II). Most people would agree: that’s not exactly the most flattering of comparisons to make.
How do you feel about Bridesmaids 2 being essentially dead in the water (for the time being)?
