Universal started making serious plans for a sequel to Bridesmaids shortly after the female-centric comedy became both a big financial and critical hit last summer. However, the new year also brought word that leading lady and co-writer Kristen Wiig wasn’t interested in working on Bridesmaids 2 – and that the project could very well move ahead without her.

Bridesmaids producer Judd Apatow recently mentioned that a second installment without Wiig, in all liklihood, will not happen. Add to that fresh confirmation from the SNL alumnus herself that she’s not planning to make a second trip down the aisle, and it sounds like this comedy sequel has officially been dropped into development hell.

Apatow spoke to On The Red Carpet at the 69th Golden Globes ceremony and said that a Wiig-less Bridesmaids 2 almost certainly won’t happen – unless he and his fellow creative minds “think of a good idea” on their own. Even so, the comedy producer juggernaut indicated (in a humorous, self-aware fashion) that he didn’t think that scenario was likely to happen.

Similarly, Wiig had the following to offer E! Online, with regards to whether or not she and Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo had any plans to collaborate again on a followup:

“We’re not planning on doing one. We had a special time making the first one, but we’re really excited to try something else. It’s going to be a little bit of a different tone, but it’s going to be a comedy, for sure.”

All things considered, that’s probably for the best. Bridesmaids was quite the entertaining mashup of chick flick elements and raunchy humor (it just barely missed making it onto our Top 10 Favorite  Movies of 2011 list) but it would have been hard for Wiig and Co. to bottle lightning a second time, with similar success.

Chances are good that, had Wiig and Mumolo been forced to work on the sequel despite their indifference, we would have ended up with a Bridesmaids 2 that just recycles the formula and approach of its predecessor (a la The Hangover Part II). Most people would agree: that’s not exactly the most flattering of comparisons to make.

How do you feel about Bridesmaids 2 being essentially dead in the water (for the time being)?

  1. I’m sure the studio hates it and will continue to try to lure Wiig back with trucks full of money but it’s best to leave it alone. A perfect storm of greatness lead to Bridesmaids and the chances of it happening again are slim. Like it says in this article just look at The Hangover 2.

  2. This movie was WAY overrated, IMO.

  3. While I’m not the best judge of comedies, the movie seemed overrated to me. I’d say her career is going well enough that she can afford to skip a sequel.

  4. I would have seen a sequel, but it’s nice to know Wiig and Apatow, et al, aren’t out for a big money grab. At least for now.

  5. I thought that ‘Bridesmaids’ was very overrated and I actually really didn’t even like it thy much haha.

  6. If Bridesmaids 2 does happen it will not be for quite a long time, Kristen Wigg has six movies coming out over the next two to three years, so even if she started writing now, the movie would be unlikely to be released before 2015 if not 2016.
