While Viggo Mortensen may have lost out to Javier Bardem (and maybe Christian Bale too) for the lead role in The Dark Tower adaptation, that’s not going to stop him from getting his deserved starring gig.

Johnny Depp and Michael Fassbender were previously rumored to take on the title character of the Huntsman in the more romantic version of the classic fairy tale Snow White, but Viggo Mortensen was chosen for the part and is now in negotiations to star in Snow White and the Huntsman.  The latest reports also indicate that Twilight star Kristen Stewart is a contender to co-star as the other title character.

Universal is sold on who they want to play the Huntsman but are still testing actresses for the part of Snow White. Stewart joins a list which also includes Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) who screen-tested last week for the part. Should the studio sign Stewart as Snow White, I have no doubt that some will scoff at the casting choice. I however, can picture her on screen alongside the friendly mentor of Mortensen’s much older Huntsman character, whose role in the film is an expansion of the character’s minor part in the original story of Snow White.

[Update: Viggo Mortensen has dropped out of negotiations with Universal and will not be in Snow White and the Huntsman.]

Stewart’s casting in this retelling of The Brothers Grimm story would mark her first major studio lead role outside of the Twilight franchise since it began and a departure from her less-mainstream indie fare as of late. Snow White and the Huntsman is one of three different Snow White movies in development and its cast may also include Charlize Theron as the evil queen.

Should all three actors sign, Universal’s take on Snow White would boast a strong cast of A-list talent. You can never go wrong with Viggo as your star so it sounds like director Rupert Sanders has a lot of potential to play with in bringing Evan Daugherty’s screenplay to life.

  1. Its a new interpretation of a classic character ,
They are not playing the Disney versions .
Glad Viggo got a choice role here .
    And I wish Kristen Luck.
    Looking forward to this one.

  2. Anyone but Kristen I have not seen her act well anywhere.

    • Watch Adventureland.

      • I did, she STILL sucked bigtime; srsly, I felt sorry if her lips, so much biting! And she sounds like she needs speech therapy, she couldn’t finish a sentence, wtf?

      • yeah sorry doc , kinda agree, kristen Stewart is a pretty bad actress, I havent been impressed at all by her, she kinda reminds me of Megan Fox without the hot body

        • I dont think she is a good actress at all, she’s kinda cute and I thought she was decent in Adventureland.

          • Decent aint good enough for this role :)

  3. Kristen Stewart is one of those actors that use to be good, but now that their famous they just stop trying.

She was good in “In To The Wild” “Speak” and “Panic Room” but since doing Twilight, it just seems like she’s not trying anymore. All the Twilight movies and AdventureLand just seemed void of any acting skills.

But to be fair, i have not seen “The Runaways” and i heard she was good in that.

As for the movie in general, i’m not too excited about, nothing about the idea or production makes me think this is a good idea

  4. She was great in The Runaways.

  5. She better do well (very well) opposite Viggo Mortensen, or her performance is most likely going to be exposed to the bitter elements.

    • I definitely agree with that.

  6. NO, NO, NO. Kristen Stewart has no right to fill those shoes.

  7. Kristen’s only good in movies that require her to be moody or depressed; all her movies are depressing.

    • Well, if this snow white is depressed and moody, Stewart will fit nicely!

  8. Noooooooooooo! Any excitement I had for this movie has just deflated with seeing Kristen Stewart’s name. Horrible choice. Please please please don’t go with Stewart.

    • mine too… down the drain :’(

    • a very big NOOOOOOOOOOOOO to Sourfacedwart

  9. Viggo is one of the best actors workign today, he needs to be in more stuff. A History Of Violence and Eastern Promises are 2 of my absolute favourite movies, hell, even Hidalgo was awesome!

    • I agree, Im really disappointed that he wont be taking on Roland in Dark Tower.

      • As am I. I have read all of Kings books, but only just started Dark Tower a few weeks ago, and in my mind I think of Viggo Mortensen when I’m reading it.

  10. Kristen has done very well in movies directed by strong Directors..
Twilight was not directed well.. as the saga continued and she went on to play other roles i see that she has proved herself and worthy actress.

Take “The Runaways” for example she did an amazing job playing JOan Jett.. Im excited to see what she brings to this character

    • I totally agree with maritza. Kristen has done well with movies directed by strong Directors. I am anxious to see Kristen in WTTR and she was great in the Runaways. Given the opportunity I know she would totally exceed in this role.

      • im guessing you two are fans of the twilight movies

  11. Slightly unrelated, but Viggo for Lex Luthor!!!

    • thats actually a pretty good idea i could totally see Viggo Mortensen as Luther

    • hmmmm, wow DOC, I really have to think about that. I like where your head is with that, but if im casting him as somebody for a superman flick I see him more as Metallo or even Braniac, yeah i can really see him as Brainiac.

      • I had a thought, that maybe Lex shouldnt be bald in the new film. Certainly not to start with.
And with Viggo, I always find there is a subtle menace in almost all of his performances, he can be a scary guy, and I thought that combined with his sense of intelligence would create a new but frightening version of Lex Luthor.
The jaded but brilliant scientist who hates Superman, hates this being that the world adores, and wants to destroy what he sees as an alien threat.

Now that would be a way to return Lex Luthor to the big screen!

        • I have long said that the way to fix Superman is to return Luthor to his roots as a man of science. Not a greedy captalist or a cartoonish buffoon, but a serious man with a serious mission.

Luthor sees himself as a defender of humanity’s future, he knows that however noble and benevolent Superman himself may be, his probable hybrid descendants are a long-term existential threat.

Mortenson could really give Lex the gravitas the character needs to make him a foe worthy of Supes.

  12. booo, i don’t want my boy Viggo to be wasting his time with nonsense like this. He should leave that to Johnny Depp.

I really wish Viggo was given a role as one of the villains in DKR.

    • Now Viggo should have played Hugo Strange!

  13. Don’t have much to say about Kristen as Snow White since I’m sure there will be both good and bad points of view, but I can say that Mortensen’s dedication to the craft of acting is pretty impeccable. He puts his all into every role, and this potentially inconsequential role could be subtle, yet captivating with him playing the character.

    • I agree, there are very few actors that put in the effort to a role that Viggo does.

  14. Stewart = Immediate loss of interest

  15. Emma stone, kat dennings, emily browning, madeline zima are all better than Kirsten stewart [at acting, of course] , maybe execs should look at them

  16. this is awful, kristen stewart sucks

  17. Well at least this movie won’t have “vampires” that SPARKLE like a snow globe. Seriously, get a different actress for this movie and I’ll see it. Viggo is one of my favorite actors. Loved Hidalgo and LOTR.

  18. okay snow white is supposed to be “the fairest of them all”…so why is kristen stewart even being considered???

  19. Yay viggo mortensen an excellent choice, I can picture him as the huntsmen. He’s a brilliant actor, really dedicated to all his roles. I loved him in lord of the rings and hidalgo. but seriously kristen stewart?choosing kristen will actually put people off seeing the film because her acting in twilight is so rubbish. and I can’t picture her as snow white anyway
