‘King of Fighters’ Trailer is Spectacularly Terrible

I think some movie makers nowadays are just trying to outdo each other when it comes to poorly-executed fighting game adaptations. One has to look no further than the last two additions to the genre, Tekken and King of Fighters, to find proof.

I don’t care what fond memories you have of playing the popular SNK video game during your childhood, Axis Entertainment  and Double Edge Entertainment are fully prepared to stomp on them while making their $12 million film. The sad thing is they were able to get some great action stars and the fantastic Asian action director Gordon Chan (Hard Boiled) to attach themselves to King of Fighters.

However, a solid cast and director didn’t stop the film from looking like a poor attempt at a lame action film. Check the official King of Fighters synopsis:

A stylish, high-octane, live action feature based on the highly successful video game franchise, in which the last surviving descendants of three legendary clans are continuously transported to other dimensions to test their martial arts skills against an evil force that seeks to invade and infect the real world. As the fighters enter each new world they battle that universe’s native defenders in pursuit of three artifacts that will grant their owner unlimited power over reality.

Yeah OK – as long as the story makes sense *eyeroll*. You can watch the trailer for this soon-to-be NetFlix rental below and be sure to check out the featurette for the film as well. The featurette is basically the trailer with cut-ins of various actors and the director trying to justify their participation in this guaranteed debacle.

TRAILER

FEATURETTE

King of Fighters stars Ray Park (Star Wars: Episode I), Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Maggie Q (Mission: Impossible III), Will Yun Lee (Elektra), Francoise Yip (Romeo Must Die), Monique Ganderton, Bernice Liu, David Leitch, Hiro Kanagawa and Sam Hargrave. The screenplay was written by first timers Rita Augustine and Matthew Fisher.

I have no problem with Hollywood trying to adapt certain video games into full length feature films. I am eagerly waiting to see what Sam Raimi can do with World of Warcraft, and this summer’s tentpole film Prince of Persia looks like it could be the first true video game movie to make a major splash.

However, it has been proven time and again that fighting games do not lend themselves well to big screen adaptations because their back-stories are weak.

All fighters must now buy their gothic outfits from Hot Topic.

What works for a video game story arc doesn’t hold up for a movie – not when the characters’ motivations have to be explained in detail. Maybe I’m wrong and King of Fighters will turn out to be the film that knocks the genre on its ear; but somehow I doubt that will be the case.

What are your thoughts on the King of Fighters trailer and what are the chances it has the moves to make it to the Boss Level?

King of Fighters opens in 2010.

  1. I hate when they do that, it sounds so mediocre like a lack of ambition or something , you know? But the action sequences seem a little alright.

  2. I can agree that the fight scenes are kinda cool but gotta agree with the hands-on-fire thing but let's just wait and see if it does look good as bad as it does.

  3. What do you mean this looks bad? This is best picture material right here…

  4. Ray Park put his name of that piece of crap? Bummer.

  5. worse than Mortal Combat…..better than Street Fighter……plus the Matrix music does not make for a movie that I will ever watch.

  6. It looks sooo cheesey lol.

Who the hell is who? I dont see anyone who resembles Terry or Andy Bogard or Mai

I didnt play the game very much was more a street fighter fan, Some of those fight scenes look good but the movie as a whole looks like to me like a fail on the Video game to movie adaption … ANOTHER ONE

I hope a God Of War movie isnt given this treatment.

  7. this movie is complete bullsh1t. lets review this crapy movie, first why rugal is so damn short, terry is a fighter not a crazy police officer, why cant they use the original outfits, why KYO use a sword. and so many other questions :S. this movie sucks and i hope nobody see it. Last but no least why make a crappy story when KOF have an amazing story line :S

  8. If Maggie Q will do at least a partial nude scene it will at least do well enough in the rentals to not loose its ass (financially speaking).

I want to see a DOA meets King Of The Fighters where the grand finale finds Tina Armstrong (that's Jamie Pressly) fighting Mai Shiranui (Maggie Q) in a towel only shower room death match where the towels fall at least 5 minutes before the finale and it has to be filmed in 3D! Man I'd pay IMax 3D prices to see Jamie Presley vs Maggie Q in a loose towel shower room match, wouldn't you?

Before you say no be sure to take a look at Jammie Presley promo pics from DOA, the ones where she's on the boat tanning and then get back to me. That guy she married is the luckies dude on the planet even more so then that idiot Ashton kuchy-Koocher

  9. Can't wait to see how that garbage can fight saves the entire Universe

  10. Movie makers have to stop making movies out of fighting games that have no story to them in the first place.

  11. Thank you for revealing, I stumbled upon this particular story whilst searching for infomation regarding my term paper, interesting comments and excellent points produced.

  12. What a craptastic movie. Hollywood had rock-solid storylines that could have translated into a fantastic movie. Terry Bogard’s father, Jeff Bogard, was murdered at the hands of Geese Howard. After Jeff’s death, Terry and Andy took to the streets to live and also train for the day they would face their father’s killer.

There they met long-time friend Joe Higashi. Eventually, the trio decides to bring down Geese Howard and his syndicate in the first Fatal Fury game.

As for The King of Fighters: there are MANY different story arcs, but the ones involving Rugal pertains to his obsession of obtaining the powers of Orochi – the God of destruction. Kyo and Iori’s clans are descendants of Orochi, hence Rugal’s determination to kill Kyo and manipulate Iori’s hatred for Kyo’s clan.

In KOF ’96, Lenoa from the Ikari team eventually discovers that she, too, is a descendant of Orochi. This opens another story arc. It goes on and on in great detail for EVERY character from KOF.
