Rebecca Ferguson's villain in The Kid Who Would Be King has been revealed. Joe Cornish broke into the world of movies in 2011 with Attack the Block. The John Boyega led alien invasion movie was hardly a box office hit, but it did receive great reviews and has continued to expand its fan-favorite status. Despite the success of his independent film, Cornish didn't immediately become a highly sought after director. He did help Edgar Wright write his version of Ant-Man and received story by credit on the movie as a result, but it will be The Kid Who Would Be King that finally puts him back in the director's chair.
The movie is Cornish's way of telling the King Arthur story that Hollywood seems to repurpose every other year or so. Cornish is looking to reinvent the story by moving the tale into the modern day, while still keeping some of the medieval elements. It was previously announced that Patrick Stewart and Rebecca Ferguson were joining the cast, and now we have our first look at Ferguson's character.

Empire revealed the new official image from The Kid Who Would Be King. The photo features Ferguson as the evil but powerful sorceress Morgana. Cornish also revealed some details about Morgana's role in the movie, stating that she's been dormant for centuries beneath Britain. She only decides to return now and seek Excalibur because she feels Britain is "leaderless and divided." She'll look to conquer the country in the film and the image of her makes her appear to be quite the intimidating foe.
Ferguson's been on an incredible rise in Hollywood over the last few years and The Kid Who Would Be King is just the latest example of this. After playing heroic but complicated characters like Ilsa Faust in the Mission: Impossible franchise, it should be fun to see her make a villainous turn here. The character design is particularly creepy and Ferguson looks to be relishing the opportunity to play a darker character.
Between this first look image and the film's trailer receiving a rating this past week, the marketing campaign for The Kid Who Would Be King is finally beginning. The movie was originally set to release this year but has since been moved back to March 2019. With the release date now set six months from the time of writing, it only makes sense that 20th Century Fox is getting started on building hype for The Kid Who Would Be King now.
