‘Kick-Ass 3′ to Conclude the Series with a Major Death?

Aaron Taylor-Johnson in 'Kick-Ass'

POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!

Kick-Ass presented moviegoers with a very different kind of superhero story. The 2010 film – which starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular hero – aimed to address the question of what would happen if an average, everyday teen were to actually go moonlighting as a crime-fighting vigilante.

A sequel is on the way this summer, and now, Kick-Ass comic book writer Mark Millar – who’s also busy overseeing Fox’s shared Marvel movie universe – reveals just how committed the series is to portraying the realistic (and inherently violent) repercussions of being a superhero.

According to SFX, Millar said that a third film is being planned but that it would conclude the main character’s arc in a way that may surprise fans used to the endless adventures of other comic book icons. Here’s what he had to say:

“‘Kick-Ass 3′ is going to be the last one, though. I told Universal this and they asked me, ‘What does that mean?’ I said, ‘It means that this is where it all ends.’ They said, ‘Do they all die at the end?’ I said, ‘Maybe’ – because this is a realistic superhero story. And if someone doesn’t have a bullet proof vest like Superman and doesn’t have Batman’s millions then eventually he is going to turn around the wrong corner and get his head kicked in or get shot in the face. So ‘Kick-Ass’ needs to reflect that. There has to be something dramatic at the end, he cannot do this for the rest of his life.”

The concept of a Kick-Ass trilogy that follows the rise and fall of a “real-life” superhero makes a lot of sense. The second film will already introduce the fact that these characters are struggling to maintain the duality between their true selves and their alter-egos (a common trope for superhero sequels like Superman 2, Spider-man 2 and, yes, The Dark Knight). But would the filmmakers really kill off the lead character? Quite possibly.

Jim Carrey and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in 'Kick-Ass 2'

From the outset, Kick-Ass established that Dave Lizewski (Taylor-Johnson) was in over his head, and if the films truly hope to retain some semblance of realism, his death would be an inevitability. Plus, unlike heroes like Batman and Superman, the Kick-Ass films are each based on specific comic book stories. There’s no well of untold stories out there. Both the Kick-Ass 2 and Hit Girl comics will be included in the story. So, much like something like Watchmen, there is a finite story to tell.

Given Millar’s remarks above, it’s a safe bet that – even if Kick-Ass lives to the end credits of the third film – the franchise might wrap up his arc by having him quit the hero game for good. Of course, this is all pure speculation at this point, as the second film has yet to be released.

How would you like the prospective Kick-Ass trilogy to end, Screen Rant readers? Would the character’s death (perhaps during an act of heroism) be a satisfying conclusion? Let us know in the comments.

Kick-Ass 2 arrives in theaters on June 28th, 2013.

  1. I hope 2 is as good as 1.

If not there may not be 3.

    • Yeah, I was going to say: let us first watch Part 2 before we talk about Kick-Ass 3. Chances are that the first one was one time thing and that the sequel doesn’t manage to deliver what made the first one so great.

      • Same here, and with Vaughn gone, who knows what the movie can turn into !
Millar is not really that big of a great story teller imho !

  2. the hero must die in the end…Greek tragedy

  3. have a feeling that its gonna be hit girl thats the major death. id be surprised if they axed kick ass

    • Yea, my money is on hit Girl getting killed which forces him out of the superhero life.

  4. I feel like he’s referring to the comic first– and the movie at the same time. I know he’s working on it at the moment, but with John Romita Jr drawing the new MARVEL NOW! Captain America, we’ll probably see Kick-Ass 3 (the movie) before the book itself.

  5. Killing Hit-Girl or anyone really is a cop-out in my opinion. Why not have Hit-Girl get physically disabled/crippled and Kick-Ass gets out of the Superhero gig to take care of her because she has no one left to do so (because we know what happened to Big Daddy).

    • They’ll have to kill off Marcus too. He takes over the parenting duties for her. And as far as I can remember, he’s still alive at the end of Kick-Ass 2. At least in the comic.

  6. Killing hit-girl or kick ass will be really stupid, no matter how good it’ll be told. The best bet is to have them give up their superhero careers

    • Agreed.

Have him retire, and come out of retirement when his dad/gf dies from a villain that knows his true identity. After he defeats the bad guy, he settles down and lives a normal life, Hit Girl can’t quit, so she trains future heros to continue the fight (Dark Knight Strikes Back).

      • Instead of killing Kick Ass, just all of sudden have the pain from those damaged nerve endings kick back in…all at once. That’ll make him retire pretty quickly. Then, he’ll either become a pain-killer hooked drug addict or he’ll just commit suicide to end it all.

  7. Yes, but Kick-Ass is meant to be fun at the end of the day. Killing off him or Hit-Girl would make no sense whatsoever.

    • You’re right, ScratStitch. I go to the movies to ESCAPE… especially in the context of this sort of movie. I know what reality can do. I do NOT want my heroes killed off!

      • How can you say that if you’ve seen the first movie?.. Escapism is for fantasy, this is Kick-Ass.

  8. “…And if someone doesn’t have a bullet proof vest like Superman…” – Pretty sure Superman has bullet proof skin, Mr. Millar…and while I’m at it, Bruce Wayne is a billionaire. Come on…how can you oversee the X-Men/Fantastic Four movie universe if you don’t even know basic details of two of the most well-known superheroes in the entire world.

    • Dude. Metaphor.

  9. Sounds good. i’m in favor of those “christ like” endings where the hero is imortalized by making the ultimate sacrifice. it depends on how it’s done.

… but then again it all depends on how much $$$ this movie makes. if KA2 makes 250 million(i doubt it but whatever) than they might just push this gravy train to 5 movies. Cause greed always trumps storytelling.

  10. I’d be down with them killing off the main character just so they leave Hit Girl alive. My biggest problem with the original was their abuse of HG. Killing kids takes movies down for me (see Looper).

    • They had no choice, Hit-Girl is even more violent in the comics, that’s “WHO” and “WHAT” she does. It would be like pretending Superman doesn’t have powers, or Batman doesn’t use technology.

  11. i was just amazed when i opened that check and saw it was for…..ahhhhhh…GOTCHA!seriously, i hope the writers and directors bring the same sensibilities to this next installment. i never read the comic book, but i was stunned by the movie. i hope the next flick has the same style as the 1st

  12. Maybe Kick Ass will bring the nuclear bomb out of the city and fake his own death, saves the city, and hooks up with Hit Girl at a French cafe with his dad watching =P

  13. My favourite idea is Dave dies taking down the enemy at the end (succeeds) but still crime is out there and his death inspires others to rise up.

  14. I want to see dave being killed… and i want Hit Girl to be the person who defeats the villain. I want Hit Girl to retire from crime due to dave’s death.

    • I 100% agree.

  15. Don’t kill the main character at least kill hit girl in herosim

    • Thumbs down, Hit-Girl is too awesome to die..lol.

  16. scratch that mabey just let red mist die

  17. I think either Dave or Mindy should die at the end. I think one of them has to stay alive to keep the story going? I love the idea of a tragic hero, I think ultimately it should be Dave who dies, and Hit-Girl, sorta being inspired by him to live a normal life. That’s the major struggle of both of them concluding. Dave lived a “normal” life, but wanted it to a superhero. Mindy has the opposite problem, she’s lived a life of violence, and hatred, to find peace, she needs to adopt a normal life. I think that’s the best way for it to end. Ultimately, it’s really about them finding out who they are, and where they fit in it all. I think it’s great, that they become closer in Kick-Ass 2. Bring on the tragedy in Kick-Ass 3.

  18. The ending of Kick ass made certain the Red Mist will be seeking revenge, which should make part 2 practically write itself. There will be more than enough attention to warrant a third film, and killing Kick ass off would be a little too obvious for the third installment.Kick ass would be only 3 years older than hit girl,so if they take it several years down the road, there could be something between the two who have weirdly inverted personalities. There would be nothing strange about a 23 year old and a 20 year old having a connection after what they did for each other.

  19. NOOO!I don’t wan’t Kick Ass or Hit Girl die. That’s really stupid, and i don’t wan’t my heroes to die ): Big Daddy did die and i don’t wan’t this to happen to HG or KA!please noooooo

  20. I want HG to die.. because i hate when the principal character dies and HG is so f*cking awesome that her death with kill us all! she should die in heroism and kick ass should live and retire… but he can’t do that for too long so he can comeback
