‘Kick-Ass 2′ Red-Band Trailer Offers More Outrageous Violence & Humor

Published 2 years ago by

Kick-Ass, Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s outrageous superhero origin satire, became a cult-hit movie back in 2010, helping to propel the entire franchise to a whole new level. This resulted in Millar and Romita returning to the comic book page for a sequel series, Kick-Ass 2, which in turn inspired the sequel film. also titled Kick-Ass 2.

Featuring returning stars Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Clarke Duke, Lyndsy Fonseca and Christopher Mintz-Plasse alongside franchise newcomers like John Leguizamo, Donal Faison and Jim Carrey, today’s Kick-Ass 2 red-band trailer promises the same level of debaucherous humor, brutal violence and touch of superhero satire that made the original so popular.

In what is sure to be referred to as the ‘Dark Knight chapter’ of the Kick-Ass trilogy, Dave Lizewski (Johnson) and Mindy Macready (Moretz) continue to train as crimfighters Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl (respectively), while also trying to acclimate to normal high school life. In the larger scope of things, their stand against crime has inspired a legion of new heroes like Colonel Stars and Stripes (Carrey) and Doctor Gravity (Faison).

However, that rise of good comes at the price of a surge in evil. When Chris D’Amico (Mintz-Plasse) adopts the alter-ego of the villainous “Motherfu#@er” as vengeance for Kick-Ass slaying his father, Dave and Mindy find themselves being hunted by freaks and maniacs – and soon, the cops as well.

The biggest point of concern regarding Kick-Ass 2 was Kick-Ass 1 writer/director Matthew Vaughn departing the sequel to work on X-Men: Days of Future Past (his sequel to First Class). Ironically enough Vaughn departed that X-Men sequel film as well, but he left Kick-Ass 2 in the hands of Jeff Wadlow, who has had middling success writing and directing films like Cry_Wolf and Never Back Down.

For his part, Wadlow has apparently captured the acerbic tone of the Kick-Ass world pretty well in the humor bits, while adding his own stylistic flare to the action sequences (such as Mindy saving Dave from that van speeding down the highway). While the Kick-Ass 2 comic book contained some controversial scenes of intense violence, it seems this red-band trailer is content on promoting the foul language and some dirty jokes.

In other words: you’ll probably have to pay admission price to see the full depths of gruesome.

Kick-Ass 2 will be in theaters on August 16, 2013.

  1. Chloe Moretz is awesome.

    • Second that statement…she is kickass

      • Third. Damn she is awesome. I think i’m in love.

        • Just Remember..shes 14.

          • 16 now buddy!

            • @James

              Um, and that’s better how???

            • @James

Uh, still illegal in most states, 48 out of 50.

              • Unless James is 16 or 17 then he’s good. Otherwise…

                • True.

  2. This movie will KICK ASS!

  3. That was a awesome trailer!!!! I can’t wait for this movie!

  4. omfg that was awesome “haha yah there’s a dog on ur balls!! hit girl looks more kick ass then ever holy crap i cant wait for this

  5. I just finished reading the TPs. I loved the first movie, but this seems truer to the comics. I cannot wait until this is released.

  6. This looks soooo much better than I thought it would. I can’t wait for this.

  7. That was pretty good actually. I didn’t really like the first one much, but this looks like it’s gonna be fun.

    • Agreed

  8. Felt kinda “Meh” to me, but hopefully that was just the trailer’s fault. The action scene on the van looks very bad, though. Green screen at its worst.

    • p.s.: I absolutely adore the first movie and I fear that Vaughn’s directorial talent and style will be sorely missed on this one.

    • I share your view that the green screen is bad, but I also think that the movie is not done yet, and is being polished up, pretty sure it will look better by the time it gets out in theater.

    • I totally agree with you, the trailer felt really off, there was no oomph to it, I remember seeing the first Kick Ass trailer and thinking ‘man i need to see this now!’
This one kind of left me nuke warm, which in an age of many trailers being better than the actual movies they are advertising, is pretty hard to do

Will defo be seeing this but I’m not as thrilled, the green screen was bad, reminded me of the football stadium scene in TDKR which didn’t improve once the movie was released

      Worried Kick Ass fan!

  9. Oh my, hit girls gotten a bit older…
if only moretz was 2 years older and knew who the hell I was.
I see a bright career ahead of her.

    • Is it weird that I’m attracted to her? I think she’s 16 now, so I guess it’s cool ;)
…anyway, I completely agree, she’s gonna be a big star the older she gets (not that she isn’t a big star already).

      • It depends on how old you are… Anyway. I am a big fan of little Miss Moretz, I honestly think she’s the best young actor/actress in Hollywood. She made Kick-Ass more memorable than it should have been. Kick-Ass made it cool for me to laugh when my young nephews used the “f” word. Funniest thing ever!!!

      • I’m a 22 year old straight female and I’m attracted to her.

        • To each their own. I got no issues sister…

  10. Wait….is Jim Carrey…actually acting?

    • He’s been known to do that for quite some time now (Truman Show, Man on the Moon, Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind etc.).

      • Yeah, either normal guy, sad guy or manic overactor.
But here hes actually doing a character I dont know and cant readily tell is jim carrey.

        • Is it me or does Carrey in this movie sounds like his Amazon steroid weight lifting female character from In Living Color.

          • He sounds more like Stallone to me.

        • @cody

I have to agree. People bring up those same movies every time I say the same thing you did, but honestly, he didn’t do too much acting in those movies either… He does seem to be taking on a different role this time around. Which is cool…

  11. Have to agree with TheLostWinchester on both counts. Looks meh. I may wait and netflix it.

  12. I just hated how they made Big Daddy dress like Batman in the first one.

    • I hated that his name was big daddy, kept thinking of bioshock.

      • I kept thinking of Big Daddy

  13. I like that Jim Carrey is playing a “character” rather than just another version of Ace Ventura. However, Im not sure how I feel about his take on Colonel Stars and Stripes. I recently re-read the comic, and I guess I pictured him as more of a gruff, mysterious, soft spoken man. Not a lunatic like Jim Carrey seems to be protraying him as.

    • You will do yourself a great favour by keeping the comic books and the movie apart. It’s really more of an inspirational thing than an actual 1:1 conversion.

I like how the movie is more tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top silliness whereas the comic books strangely feel more down to earth. If anything, i would have expected it to be the other way around.

  14. Good work masking your voice jim carrey lol (no sarcasm)

  15. I’m going to echo the sentiment of most everybody else here, that trailer won me over and I’m shocked Jim Carrey actually looks like he’s acting here. I wasn’t nuts about the first Kick Ass (seemed silly to me) but this one looks kind of interesting. Like maybe it has more to offer than just “shock value” violence and swearing. Then again, I guess the trade-off would be the loss of a director with a proven track record. I guess we’ll just have to see.

    • Honestly the first movie is very true to the comic…..a lot of “shock value violence and swearing.” This movie will be no different in that regard. :)

  16. Absolutely awesome. I loved the first one and cannot wait to see what’s in store for the characters this second time around.

  17. I liked the trailer but I’m still on the fence about this one.
I thought Kick Ass was brilliant mostly because it was such a surprise. In all honesty who really expected that? But the stars aligned and we got a pretty great film.
So what are the chances of that happening again because we kind of know what to expect this time?
I hope I’m wrong and Kick Ass 2 feels as fresh and is full of surprises like part 1. I’ll be happy if I am. But I’m still not sure.

  18. Movie looks awesome! The first one was a big hit with me an my wife we loved it. Excited for this one to come out!

Chloe moretz is a badass. That is all. Yeah she’s attractive and all bit she has pure talent. Let me in was a fantastic film of hers.

I hope she’s in the new Star Wars to e honest.

    • Chloe is my #1 pick for Jaina Solo. I think she’d be fantastic, and she’s pretty much right the age by 2015.

      • She is my pick too but remember they will most likely film it in 2014.

  19. Jim Carrey looks awesome!

  20. This looks good! Even with the crazy violence I think the comics are great. This looks to stay pretty true to the source material. Jim Carrey stole the show for me. Chloe is a close 2nd. I look forward to this one indeed.

  21. I will say that i think the trailer looks promising and like it will be a good time i wasn’t a big fan of the first one buts thats just because it wasn’t really my thing, this looks like it will entertain me more though i’m all in

  22. Jim Carrey looks and sounds fantastic. I love how he sounds different from almost every single other role he does (Riddler, Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, etc.) and it looks like he really kills it here. With this and Burt Wonderstone, it looks like Mr. Carrey is finally back!

Rest of the trailer looks pretty awesome. My only gripe, which is unavoidable, is that Chloe Moretz looks too old now. The whole appeal of her character in Kick-Ass was that she was an 11-year-old that looked sweet and innocent but stabbed people with giant swords and dropped the c-bomb casually. She still looks bad-ass, but her character seems to be completely different. Now she’s a teenage girl who looks hot but can kick your ass. Totally different idea, but maybe I’m just worrying too much.

Other than that, I’m pretty damn psyched!

  23. Yes!

  24. Also, I was wondering, if Hit Girl was 11 in the last movie and she’s 15 now, that means 4 years have passed. So why is Kick-Ass still in high school? Or is that a flashback?

Also, at the end of Kick-Ass, why did Hit Girl join Kick-Ass’s school as a high school freshman? Shouldn’t she be in middle school?

    • if i was you, i would not bother going to see the movie

      • Why is that? I’m not nitpicking. I’m genuinely curious about the answers. It doesn’t detract at all from my movie-watching, I was just wondering.

    • Correct me if I’m wrong because I haven’t seen the movie in a while but maybe the high school has a middle school inside it so she wasn’t entering as a freshman but she was entering as a 6th grader or something. Regarding Kick-Ass there was a scene with him walking the halls of school with Clark Duke so either he was 14 during the first movie or like you said earlier, that was a flashback. I don’t think his age was stated in the first movie so if you can buy a 23 year old Tom Welling playing a 14 year old Clark Kent on Smallville, hopefully you can accept that Dave was 14 back then hehe.

  25. You pervs need to chill; the girl is 16 years old.

“In what is sure to be referred to as the ’Dark Knight chapter’”

I dont think nobody will be making that comparison at all.

But I liked the trailer, I think Chloe will do great again, and I can’t wait to see Jim Carrey in action.

    • What I think he means by calling it the “Dark Knight chapter” is that Kick-Ass 2 will be darker and perhaps even better than the first Kick-Ass, similar to how the Dark Knight was better than Batman Begins (IMO). Also, Heath Ledger gave a surprising performance as the Joker so Jim Carrey will perhaps give a surprising performance in Kick-Ass 2. I’m not trying to speak for Kofi but it’s just my opinion about his wording.

  26. its funny how Pain and Gain and Kick-Ass 2 trailer uses DREDD 3D soundtrack

  27. Oh my, I think this will actually be better than the first! I’m mostly excited for Jim Carry. I could barely recognize his voice in this trailer! Also, I laughed at the Dark Knight comparison.

    • Yup BB was definitely better than TDK!

  28. I’m going to see this movie.

  29. Seems like they’re keeping everything we love about the first one and amplifying it here. They’re also doing the Christopher Nolan “What is a superhero and do we really need superheroes or do we need to be superheroes?” thing, but with more profanity.

Also, Jim Carrey looks like he’s going to be a ball.
