The last time Jim Carrey appeared in a comic book movie, it was 1995 and the rubber-faced actor was smoldering-hot off a string of comedic hits - Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, Dumb & Dumber - when he donned green tights and orange hair as the Riddler in Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever.

Carrey is returning to the superhero genre with Kick-Ass 2, the sequel to Matthew Vaughn's self-satirical take on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s comic book. Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down) is assuming writing and directing duties on Kick-Ass 2, since Vaughn is preoccupied with pre-production duties on X-Men: Days of Future Past. Carrey will play a more gruff costumed character in the sequel - the militaristic Colonel Stars.

Ex-Mafia enforcer (and born-again Christian) Sal Bertolinni is the man behind the Colonel Stars persona. In Kick-Ass 2, he founds Justice Forever (JF), a team of aspiring superheroes inspired by the example of Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson) to help battle crime and corruption on the streets of New York. Recent photos from the Kick-Ass 2 set have revealed JF members Doctor Gravity (Donald Faison) and the husband-wife duo, Remembering Tommy.

Today, we have a handful of Kick-Ass 2 pics (via shot7photo) that reveal Carrey in costume, along with images of Lindy Booth (Dawn of the Dead, Cry_Wolf) as JF member Night B**ch. As you can see, Carrey's appearance doesn't deviate from John Romita Jr.'s source illustrations; Booth's outfit, on the other hand, is a clear departure from NB's original design (and an improvement, in this writer's opinion).

Night Bitch in Kick-Ass 2

Colonel Stars, as mentioned before, is a change of pace from Carrey's customary comedy roles. The character avoids cursing when possible, takes an unrelenting aggressive stance against criminals, and sees his superhero duties as penance for the evil deeds he performed in service of the Genovese crime family. In Kick-Ass 2, he's the antithesis to The Motherf**ker - the baddie formerly known as Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) - and his band of villainous teen delinquents.

Carrey buttoned down his outlandish quirks in films like The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and I Love You Phillip Morris, but the closest he's come to this sort of character role before was with his darkly-layered performance in Schumacher's The Number 23. That movie was critically-derided for several reasons, but Carrey's acting was generally not one of them; hence, our interest is piqued to see how, exactly, he does playing the Colonel.

Kick-Ass 2 opens in theaters on June 28th, 2013.
