Nikkie Finke reported yesterday about the upcoming Thor film and how Marvel and director Kenneth Branagh are facing a big challenge in trying to cast the lead character. In her report, she lists some of the candidates in the running to wield Mjolnir and become the God of Thunder.

Interestingly, she also points out that they are considering Josh Hartnett not only for the role of Loki, the God of Mischief, but to play The Mighty Thor himself. Now, I can see him giving an interesting performance as Loki but my suspension of belief doesn’t extend to him playing Thor.

While there’s some desire by Marvel to see Hartnett or another recognizable actor to play Thor, there’s also a lot of interest in casting an unknown. Personally, I don’t know which would be best for this movie but I liked the idea of casting a relatively unknown actor like Alexander Skarsgård (who was rumored to be Branagh’s leading choice last week).

So, now we have a list of candidates (or shall I say…contestants) who are in the running to play our favorite Asgardian Avenger. Let’s see what they’re all about:

Josh Hartnett

Our first contestant enjoys reading, writing and long walks on the beach… Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Josh, our obviously most famous candidate, is 30 years old, 6′ 3″ and was born in San Francisco, California. Josh has starred as the lead in many feature films including Pearl Harbour, Lucky Number Slevin and Hollywood Homicide.

Josh was rumored last week to be sought after to play Loki in the Thor movie, it is now said he is being considered for Thor.

Liam Hemsworth

Liam is an Australian actor who doesn’t have a large acting resume as of yet. He is best known for roles on the two television programs, Neighbours and The Elephant Princess. Liam has upcoming appearances in next month’s Alex Proyas movie, Knowing as well as a rumored role in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables.

Tom Hiddleston

Tom is 6′ 1½” and nearly 28 years old. He hails from London, England and played a role in the Wallander miniseries which starred Kenneth Branagh as the lead character, police detective Kurt Wallander – Now we get the connection.

Charlie Hunnam

Charlie stands 6′ 1″ and turns 29 next month. Born in Newcastle, England, Mr. Hunnam and has had roles in some big movies such as Children of Men and Cold Mountain. Charlie made his mark in the business with his starring role alongside Katie Holmes in the 2002 thriller, Abandon.

Joel Kinnaman
There’s not much information on the web available for Joel but we do know that he is a Swedish actor, 29 years old who hasn’t yet starred in any North American films or television.

Alexander Skarsgård

Son of actor Stellan Skarsgård and both our tallest and oldest candidate, Alexander also hails from Sweden, is 32 years old and stands 6′ 4″. Alexander is growing rapidly in popularity for his role in HBO’s Generation Kill and his current role in HBO’s True Blood as a 1000+ year old vampire who sports the same hairstyle as Thor.

Alexander was also spotted in a meeting with Kenneth Branagh last week, which sparked rumors of him being the director’s first choice to play Thor.

That’s it for our contestants – My personal pick goes to Alexander Skarsgård whom I thought was a good pick when the rumors first surfaced last week. There was some feedback however, saying he was small or skinny which I believe is entirely untrue – just look at the following image of him as Eric Northman in True Blood.

Now imagine giving him another two years to workout for the role.

Out of the candidates, Alexander is the tallest, oldest and the largest. He also hails from a Nordic country and has the natural hair and look. I don’t think it gets better than that.

As for Josh Hartnett, I can in no way see him as Thor but I do like him as Loki.

What do you think of the candidates and who should Kenneth Branagh cast?

Thor opens in theaters June 17, 2011.

  1. How the heck is Matt Damon or Jason Bourne anything like Cpt. America? Aren’t both of them (actor and character) more anti-American than anything?

  2. Jason Bourne is the character that Matt Damon plays. Honestly the only reason people think that he is un-American is because he completely ripped Saharah Palin apart like he did. But that’s political and I’m not doing that right now.

Well folks you got your wish. Liam Hemsworth is playing Thor. Well I guess it could be worse. Thank goodness that Carrot Top was not an option.

  3. Um … isn’t it Chris?

  4. Aye!An Aussie playing a Nordic God…I don’t know, I hope that guy makes a good job…still, they could have picked Alexander.

  5. I supported the idea of Alexander from the start.
    I’m disappointed.

  6. Chris will be able to carry Thor’s nobility alot better methinks.

  7. A lot better, Manowar? Methinks not.

But, hopefully he will do a good job.

  8. That blows that Skarsgard did not get the part. They missed out on cashing in on the huge fan base of True Blood Eric fans. As Eric would say “Poorly played”
I would have paid money to see it when in the Theater but now it will be just wait till DVD for me that they cast a no name.

  9. Well.. at least we’ll see Alexander Skarsgård in the remake of Straw Dogs.

  10. Honestly what were they thinking in not casting Eric? I mean Alexander Skarsgard. He is a nordic God as far as the female population is concerned…I would never go to see the movie Thor. But would have definitely gone to see him.

  11. Okay listen. Yawl it’s great that everyone thinks the guy is an uber hunk (I’m a guy so to me it’s like… “What Ever”). I have to help you all understand something. COMIC BOOK MOVIES DON’T MAKE THE VERY VAST MAJORITY OF THEIR MONEY ON GIRLS LOOKING TO SEE A HUNKY GUY. I mean seriously it is us (hunky or not) geeks that will go see the movie over and over again. The people who will then buy the movie on Blu Ray and DVD, the Director’s Cut and Special Edition(after seeing 4 – 10 times at the regular movies and then 3 more times at the $1.50 movies). Believe me guys I know folks that are that bad. See Devious you are never going to buy a Transformer or a Wolverine do… I mean “Action Figure” for yourself. I would buy the entire collection of them both. But that would require that I kick my kids out of the house. That’s where they make their money. The repeat seers and merchandise buyers. They’ll make $6,000,000.00 on you. They will make 206,000,000.00 with me. I’m not saying that you guys don’t have a dog in the fight. You do. Really you do. But yours is a Doberman Pincher. Mine is an armor plated Pit-bull with laser beams and friends.
Ok let me try this another way. I saw the original Batman at the movies in 1989 3 times. I still watch the original Transformers (cartoon) movie. Speaking of which I saw Transformers 2007 4 times at the movie I now own two copies. I’ve seen every X-Man movie so far the first day (usually the first showing). I did the same thing with Spiderman. I even own the Dare Devil and Elektra Movies (They sucked). I realize that I’m revealing my “Geek-dom” in full fledge embarrassing details. The real truth is that I’m a kid at heart. And I’m living my wildest child hood dream.
My point is simple. It is nice that you guys feel all important. I like for women to feel important. But don’t mistake that for all-importance. These movies make their money on us and therefore they should and for the most part shall cater to us. Skarsgard would not have been good in this movie.

  12. Willie green…

Bull! How about the women in the comics? Are they ugly, too skinny or too fat?NO!They’re not epitome of the average women, drawn tremendously athletic with really big Kazoos!?That’s very rare in real life! For instance, if you go too see a movie like “Elektra” (Bad movie 1 know) You want to see a presentable Elektra, one that could fit the comics and your imagination. same as us chics, only I wanted to see some finesse worthy of a Northern God and not some monkey dude, Alex Skarsgard has that!Actually, as an actor… Skarsgard is brilliant! But i’m curious to see what this Aussie has to offer us…hey! Wolverine comes from Australia too, ya know?

  13. Yeah, whatever man. I could go all into what’s wrong with what you are saying. Here’s truth, Thor is Muscle Bound, Intense, Arrogant (and rightfully so), noble, and clean cut (except for the long hair). Skarsgard is no of those. He’s a skinny surfer boy with no evidence of nobility. He is certainly not clean cut. He does have long hair though. He has that exact edge that would ruin this movie. Chris Hemsworth on the other hand has the intensity, arrogance, he is clean cut, he vomits Prince or King of his hair. Most recent pictures show he’s putting on Muscles and growing hair. I am sure he will do the job right. As for the women in comics here is my breakdown.

Halle is no Storm: She is too young, too pretty, too America, too delicate.

    Elecktra was a perfect pick.

Rougue should have been someone else; She is too young, Not pretty enough, too delicate, and too Northern United States

Mystique was an incredible pick. I was disappointed that they had her running around naked though (don’t get me wrong I’m a guy and I have nothing against a naked woman) it lacked imagination.

Look I just want Marvel to cast these roles to look and act as much like the characters as possible. Don’t get me wrong either, all of the actors did incredible jobs in their roles. And, they were great movies. But the casting sucked.

In a sentence let’s sum this up to this. Cast them like they are drawn.

Hey Abbie: Big ups on the Spider-Woman under-roos. That’s why I have a son, so I can buy the hands and feet of characters and wear them around the house. Hopefully one day I will get to courage to finally go out in public wearing my Thing feet, Wolverine Hands, Batman Belt, Superman Cape, and Hulk Face. One of these days (after I get back in shape), I’m going to shave my head paint my entire body and a surf board silver and learn to surf. I apologize for generalizing women.

  14. I disagree with Mystique not being original naked. I think that made it 100 times more realistic than just some blue girl with tights on. I mean, SHE shape-shifts, not her outfit right? So logically, she’ll have to be naked, it makes a lot more sense. Sometimes comic books don’t exactly translate to the silver screen without some changes. I think that was one of the surprisingly good ideas they had in the X-Men franchise. In my opinion of course.

  15. it looks like they are trying more for the Ultimate Universe and so Thor needs to be that hippie kind of character that would be the head of PETA and such

  16. @Willie Green

    The casting choices that Marvel has made, or had full control over were;
Robert Downey Jr – Tony Stark = Perfect
Ed Norton – Bruce Banner = Pretty Great

both of those are great picks and im sure Marvel will get the right guy to play Thor

  17. @Michael

So doesn’t that mean he’ll have to be a whiney pansy that doesn’t shower? That’ll be weird…

  18. If Thor was a hippie and loved the eath would you litter, I didnt think so…:D

  19. @Michael

I knooooooooooowwwwwwwwww weren’t they great picks. When I heard that Tony Stark was going to be Robert Downey Jr., I knew that something had changed in Marvel Movies. When I found out that Ed Norton was Bruce Banner I could leaped for joy like on those old Toyota Commercials. In that movie they even got Betty, General Ross, The Leader (the doctor that got the drops of blood on his forehead) and Doc Samson right. In Iron Man they got Rhodey (the first time) right and Gwyneth Paltrow was the perfect Pepper Potts. The guys at Marvel Studios are incredible.

Yeah even the Hippie Thor is huge compared to the average LARGE guy. The name Thor even seems to imply this. The fact that he is the Norse god of Thunder also supports this. Norse (Vikings) were not know for their small stature. He’s even has an arrogance and a sense of Nobility. Chris can pull it off… Skarsgard couldn’t. Boy is that going to start a DO DO storm.

  20. “Disney to buy comic book powerhouse Marvel for $4B”

And DC Comics screams, “WE’VE BEEN SAVED!!!”

  21. Willie, what’s with the CNN vid?

  22. Sorry I was testing something out.
