Nikkie Finke reported yesterday about the upcoming Thor film and how Marvel and director Kenneth Branagh are facing a big challenge in trying to cast the lead character. In her report, she lists some of the candidates in the running to wield Mjolnir and become the God of Thunder.

Interestingly, she also points out that they are considering Josh Hartnett not only for the role of Loki, the God of Mischief, but to play The Mighty Thor himself. Now, I can see him giving an interesting performance as Loki but my suspension of belief doesn’t extend to him playing Thor.

While there’s some desire by Marvel to see Hartnett or another recognizable actor to play Thor, there’s also a lot of interest in casting an unknown. Personally, I don’t know which would be best for this movie but I liked the idea of casting a relatively unknown actor like Alexander Skarsgård (who was rumored to be Branagh’s leading choice last week).

So, now we have a list of candidates (or shall I say…contestants) who are in the running to play our favorite Asgardian Avenger. Let’s see what they’re all about:

Josh Hartnett

Our first contestant enjoys reading, writing and long walks on the beach… Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Josh, our obviously most famous candidate, is 30 years old, 6′ 3″ and was born in San Francisco, California. Josh has starred as the lead in many feature films including Pearl Harbour, Lucky Number Slevin and Hollywood Homicide.

Josh was rumored last week to be sought after to play Loki in the Thor movie, it is now said he is being considered for Thor.

Liam Hemsworth

Liam is an Australian actor who doesn’t have a large acting resume as of yet. He is best known for roles on the two television programs, Neighbours and The Elephant Princess. Liam has upcoming appearances in next month’s Alex Proyas movie, Knowing as well as a rumored role in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables.

Tom Hiddleston

Tom is 6′ 1½” and nearly 28 years old. He hails from London, England and played a role in the Wallander miniseries which starred Kenneth Branagh as the lead character, police detective Kurt Wallander – Now we get the connection.

Charlie Hunnam

Charlie stands 6′ 1″ and turns 29 next month. Born in Newcastle, England, Mr. Hunnam and has had roles in some big movies such as Children of Men and Cold Mountain. Charlie made his mark in the business with his starring role alongside Katie Holmes in the 2002 thriller, Abandon.

Joel Kinnaman
There’s not much information on the web available for Joel but we do know that he is a Swedish actor, 29 years old who hasn’t yet starred in any North American films or television.

Alexander Skarsgård

Son of actor Stellan Skarsgård and both our tallest and oldest candidate, Alexander also hails from Sweden, is 32 years old and stands 6′ 4″. Alexander is growing rapidly in popularity for his role in HBO’s Generation Kill and his current role in HBO’s True Blood as a 1000+ year old vampire who sports the same hairstyle as Thor.

Alexander was also spotted in a meeting with Kenneth Branagh last week, which sparked rumors of him being the director’s first choice to play Thor.

That’s it for our contestants – My personal pick goes to Alexander Skarsgård whom I thought was a good pick when the rumors first surfaced last week. There was some feedback however, saying he was small or skinny which I believe is entirely untrue – just look at the following image of him as Eric Northman in True Blood.

Now imagine giving him another two years to workout for the role.

Out of the candidates, Alexander is the tallest, oldest and the largest. He also hails from a Nordic country and has the natural hair and look. I don’t think it gets better than that.

As for Josh Hartnett, I can in no way see him as Thor but I do like him as Loki.

What do you think of the candidates and who should Kenneth Branagh cast?

Thor opens in theaters June 17, 2011.

  1. That last picture of Alexander Skarsgård really seals the deal for me. He’s already muscular, and just needs some mass. He looks more like Thor then anyother candidate. I’m worried about having Josh Hartnett as Loki. Although he has a somewhat evil look/grin to him, I’m not sure Josh can pull off the diabolical nature of Loki. And as for Portman being Lady Sif?? I think she’s too short. Lucy Lawless in her younger days would’ve looked better.

Come on, that guy deserves it!

  3. HEEEEEECCCCCKKKKK NOOOOOO!!! josh harnet as Thor???!!! What are these people thinking!! He might make a good Loki. As for all the other picks, they’d better start pumping some serious iron to wield Mjonir. All of them just look too scrawny to me.

  4. HEEEEEECCCCCKKKKK NOOOOOO!!! for Josh hartnett even as Loki! NOPE! Well, that is my opinion. Out of all of them, yep, it has to Skarsgard. Manowar says it best, that pic seals the deal! And you are right, Rob, some working out to get some mass, he will be fine. I would not say he should be cut but have mass put on him. Something similar to how Arnold was in Conan, he was not really cut up for the film but he had the mass and structure.

Now I love Natalie Portman. I mean, reeeeaaaallly love her! But hells nah for Lady Sif! Portman’s a hobbit if she is paired up with Skarsgard! They need to do a casting search for Sif as well!

  5. I don’t know who can look at that pic of Alexander and call him skinny…

  6. @John “Kahless” Taylor

    beat me to it Damn!!!

my 2 sents; cast Alexander Skarsgård and this movie will rock…

  7. I’m going to have to agree, Alexander Skarsgård has my vote. Two years of bulk should put him at about the appropriate size.

Though, the wrestler “Triple H” is already there. :P

  8. @Carl Lee,
Yes Trips has the size, but his look is more suited for a Conan film than Thor. Best example, when he came out sitting on the Conan throne at WrestleMania 20! Plus all his T-Shirt merchandise takes from the Conan world and Frazetta art!

  9. as it goes for natalie Portman i do feel a bit conflicted you see small might be good it could make him look huge!!!

  10. Alexander Skarsgård is my pic out of these.
on Portman, maybe getting small actors like her, could make Thor appear more godly and large. so that would be cool. he would apear as big as the comics w/out actually being it. and i mean not everyone has to be small, he’s amongst gods, other guys could be as big as him, and he should fight frost giants and dragons!!!!!

  11. @SK47
That doesn’t mean he can’t play both characters. I’ll stand by Alexander but if HHH rumours start floating around, all bets are off.

  12. Definitely Alexander. Of all the candidates he’s by far the closest to the look of Thor. Josh Hartnett, really? They must smoke some good stuff in the casting room at Marvel. LOL. Loki, yes, Thor, NO!! The other guys mentioned aren’t even CLOSE to the right size for Thor.

As for the wrestlers, let’s just leave them in the ring where bad acting is mandatory.

  13. im for Alexander Skarsgård .
he looks the part and we know he can act.
so all he needs is a little more Bulk and let odin give Mjolnir to his Powerful son.

  14. Oh god! Just seeing tha image of Alexander… Man, HE IS THOR!!! Yeap, hands down… the best and perfect choice.

And as for Loki, Josh isn’t that bad, but I think they should keep looking for somebody else.

  15. Maguire I meant…

  16. I haven’t seen that pic of Alex yet I admit he is much bigger in that than any picture I have seen. However I was looking at pictures from this year in fact only a month ago and he was very small in those pics. So I’m confused about the massive loss in mass. Still not my first choice, but out of the currently listed contenders he is really the only option non of the others are even close to resembling Thor. A lot of people say Alex can act so I’ll just hope they’re right. I haven’t seen anything he has been in and honestly have no interest in them especially True Blood which from what I have seen previews of looks awful.

With that out of the way I think Hartnet as Loki and then putting Portman in the film is an excellent decision. I would say have Alex beef up some and have Josh slim down a little more and it would look really well. It would of star power and Josh and Natilie are both talented actors.

  17. ALEX.
    Its a no brainer.

  18. @ Daniel F,

My goal in writing this was to convince you and I looked for that pic of him just for you as well :)

    Mission Accomplished.

  19. Skarsgård. period. hartnett i could see as loki.

  20. I have seen much of Alexander Skarsgard’s work in English and Swedish. He’s wonderful and he’s not trite in his interpretations. His would be a very complex and nuanced depiction of Thor (in addition to the action)- not one dimensional. The looks and lineage are perfect. Skarsgard is the one.

Harnett as Loki could be interesting if his abilities are broader than he’s previously shown. Heath Ledger was a respected actor before he played The Joker. Playing a villian does not guarantee a good performance; but if Hartnett can use Loki to show real acting chops then it could change the course of his career.

Portman? Mixed feelings about that. The film could use her star power and beauty. Can’t picture her with Skarsgard, though. And I haven’t really liked her recent performances that much. Still, I don’t want to underestimate her. I’ll reserve judgement pending further consideration.

  21. Oh yeah! Stellan Skarsgard as Odin would rock!

  22. Just a minor Correction Rob I’m not Convinced just warmed up to the idea. Still not my first choice out of anyone just on this list. To be fair with out that pic he would still be the first one. I don’t know anyone on this list except for Hartnett and he looks more like Thor than any of these guys. He is indeed bigger than I had thought though the newest pics of him show him as much smaller than that. I also have no knowledge of his acting because all of his work has seemed like crappy films or TV so I choose not to watch.

  23. I like Nathalie Portman and feel that she is one of the few exceptions to the current trend of bad young actresses. Seriously, can you name more than 2 young actresses now that actually can act??

But the last movie I saw of hers, V for Vendetta, I wasn’t too impressed with her. But I think it was more to do with the way her character was written than her acting…

  24. Skarsgard for Asgard!

He’s Thor, just hope the guys behind the movie can see that.

  25. V for Vendetta was just a poorly put together movie. I think her poor performance was part that and part her probably not truly being supportive over the film. Most actors no matter how artistic usually at least do one or two movies just for a paycheck. My fave performance by her was in Garden State.

  26. @Carl Lee
Triple H should only be an extra just for fanboys.

Betting Alexander Skarsgård gets the main role, but Charlie Hunnam second pick.

  27. I like Portman as an actress, like Ken said she is very talented compared to the cokeheads that is considred “young Hollywood”, but also, like every other actor/actress everything is hit and miss. Halle Berry got an Oscar for Monsters Ball, then made me wonder why in Catwoman and Die Another Day.
I think Portman’s best work has been in Closer. I really enoyed V For Vendetta but I agree with Daniel that she really didn’t do it for me in that film. There are small parts where she shined but overall, not that good. Anyways, point is, my standing is that just because she is talented does not mean she is right for this. I think she would make a better Janet Pym/Wasp. That is more suited to her.
