Johnny Depp and Keith Richards Keith Richards Returning For Pirates of the Caribbean 4

By now we’re all quite familiar with Johnny Depp’s inspiration for his Oscar-nominated turn as Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film – Rolling Stone’s legendary guitarist, Keith Richards.

Richards donned pirate attire and a funny hat to boot for his cameo appearance as Sparrow’s father, Captain Teague, in the third Pirates movie and will reprise the role for the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

On Stranger Tides picks up after the events of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and finds Sparrow on a quest to locate the Fountain of Youth. Geoffrey Rush will reprise his role as Captain Barbossa, while franchise newcomers Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane will play, respectively, a woman from Sparrow’s past and the villainous pirate Blackbeard.

Captain Teague was introduced as the keeper of the pirate code in Pirates of the Caribbean 3 and only appeared onscreen for (maybe) three minutes or so. There’s no word yet as to whether or not Richards will have a larger role in Pirates of the Caribbean 4 or if moviegoers will actually be able to understand what he’s saying this time around (we kid – sort of).

Richards as Captain Teague in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End'.

At World’s End suffered from being overblown in nearly every way imaginable and On Stranger Tides should have a shorter running time and feature fewer extraneous characters and plot threads. It is a Pirates of the Caribbean movie, so there’ll still be plenty of visual FX, explosive set pieces, elaborate costumes, and Depp drunkenly cracking one-liners.

So what villainous supernatural creatures will appear in Pirates of the Caribbean 4? We’ve already had undead pirates, fish people, and a sea captain with a beard made of squid tentacles – is there anything the fourth movie can throw at moviegoers that will seem that much weirder in comparison?

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides arrives in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters in the U.S. on May 20th, 2011.

  1. As for creatures… well, looking forward to the mermaids 😉

  2. Here’s the piece of news that I’ve been anxiously awaiting!

I hated the third POC movie, but Keef’s cameo made the movie worth seeing for me. He’s pretty much my favorite person (famous person, that is) on the face of the Earth, so I’d see the movie just because he’s in it. Hell, I would see Twilight if he had a cameo.

    • I hear that Mick might be in it too, so that just makes it all the better.

      • He’ll want them “ALIIIVE”…

  3. I really enjoyed all these movies. The third movie was pretty out there but I still liked it. Johnny Depp cracks me up. I was hoping he would have shown up at the end of Alice in Wonderland. I thought it would have been hilarious if he would have shown up when she gets on the ship as Jack Sparrow. That would have been the best easter egg ever.

  4. The amount of popups and advertising on this site lately is getting quite abnoxious…

  5. Obnoxious*

    • I was gonna say… lol

  6. This is good news! I really hope this turns out better than the 3rd. That one was horrendous!

  7. Sharktopus anyone? haha

I’ve enjoyed all the Pirates films (yes the 3rd didn’t quite measure up, but it was still cool). Can’t wait for this one!!!

    • i liked them all as well Foo

    • LOL, either that or ill-tempered mutated sea bass!

      • Now, Dentist…why would they want my sister-in-law in this movie?

        • Because it’d bring a whole new meaning to the expression “married to the sea”, dan? That and tax reasons… 😛

          • Alas, the sis-in-law’s such a foul-tempered [*PROFANITY SUBSTITUTION*], she’d scare the Sharktopus into living on land!

            • LOL, dan – I feel your pain!

  8. I’m not expecting any great scripts when it comes to the PotC series, but I love them all :)

    • Missed the reply button below there!

  9. “How’s mama?”

    (Richards holds up shrunken head)

    “She looks great!”

Nice. Richards was surprisingly restrained – one of the few performances in the movie that wasn’t played for laughs – and all the better for it. Yeah, I think McShane’ll be perfect as Blackbeard providing they don’t overuse him like Barbossa. I’ve only just started watching Deadwood, and he’s a force of nature in that. Terrifying in Sexy Beast as well, just by smiling!

Talking about people being difficult to understand, I’m having trouble making out what Calamity Jane’s saying in Deadwood. Sounds as though she’s talking through a mouthful of newspaper half the time…

  10. Er… a sea captain with beard made of squid tentacles? That sounds like Davy Jones to me!

Though I have my doubts, I’m sure Pirates 4 will be fantastic! I’m thinking about going to see the midnight showing of Tron just for the Pirates trailer.

  11. I for one am glad that they are doing a POTC 4 but I’m surprised they managed to talk Depp into it after the way AT WORLDS END turned out.

  12. I love Captain Teague!! I hope he is in the movie!!

  13. Aarr me hardies couldn’t of picked a better pirate than olde Keithy.. When I realised Johnny Depp created Jack Sparrow with Keith Richards in mind I thought he was a genius.. I have loved every POC and watching Depp play Keithy was just fantastic then to have him in the third and fourth movie I just want to say Thankyou was such a pleasure to watch Congratulations on a job well done
