John Wick Chapter 2 opens this week, bringing Keanu Reeves back as the revenge-seeking former assassin. Amidst old faces like Lance Reddick and John Leguizamo, come a few new foes as John heads to Europe. Ruby Rose and Ian McShane join the fray, along with Reeves’ The Matrix co-star, Laurence Fishburne. Early buzz has been largely positive for the sequel, leading many to wonder if the possibility of a third John Wick isn’t far behind. Now, you can add one more voice to the calls for a third film.

In a recent interview, Reeves expressed interest in continuing to play the role for at least one more movie. Late last year, it was announced that a third film was in the works, with early development getting underway right as the push toward Chapter 2 was gaining steam, but while it seems like an inevitability, the star is, for now, choosing to focus on whether or not his second outing as the assassin resonates with audiences.

Reeves told EW:

“I love the character and the world. Whether or not I get the chance to do another chapter is really up to the audience. If they enjoy what we did — and hopefully they do, fingers-crossed, I really dig it — but if they do enjoy it, then I’ll have the chance to continue the story of the character and the world.”

At this point, it seems as though a third outing is everything but good to go. That’s great news for fans captivated by the world of The Continental and its clientele of deadly assassins. As cinematic world building goes, John Wick introduced one of the more fascinating original worlds seen in years. One way or another, it does seem as though we’ll eventually see some sort of expansion.

In addition to plans for a third John Wick movie, last week it was announced that Lionsgate has approached co-director Chad Stahelski about developing a television prequel series that would explore Wick’s violent past. While that remains an intriguing idea for an expansion, it would be nice if they could provide an arc in the form of a trilogy of films in order to complete Wick’s cinematic saga. That, of course, will depend on whether or not Chapter 2 is successful.

If the early reviews are accurate, fans of the first movie’s world building won’t be disappointed with this chapter in the Wickverse. While the success of a film can’t necessarily be tied to positive reviews and buzz, it’s usually a good indicator of how well a film is expected to perform financially. With so much positivity coming out of early screenings, it seems likely that John Wick Chapter 3 will be on the table for the future. That’s good news for Reeves and great news for fans.
