Keanu Reeves Talks ‘Bill & Ted 3′; First Draft 6 Weeks Away

Published 4 years ago by , Updated August 13th, 2013 at 10:28 pm,

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was an amazing discovery as a kindergartner, primarily due to how infantile, crude, and hilarious Bill S. Preston Esquire and Ted “Theodore” Logan were – as played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves.

So call me crazy, but I’ll be very happy if Bill & Ted 3 ever becomes a reality. Late last year, Reeves expressed massive enthusiasm for a second sequel, going so far as to pitch ideas involving a black and white aesthetic and directors like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Werner Herzog. Now, he says a draft of the script is just six weeks away from being finished.

According to Keanu Reeves, who talked to MTV:

“I believe [Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, the original writers of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure] are six weeks away from a draft – no pressure guys.”

When asked about the story for Bill & Ted 3, Reeves was initially tight-lipped:

“I know a little bit [about the story]. But I don’t [really] know. The fellows went off and cooked it up. I don’t know what happened when they went off and put the elements together.”

Then, after being pushed for more details, Reeves said:

“When we last got together [in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey], Bill and Ted were supposed to have written this song that saved the world – and it hasn’t happened. And so they’ve kind of now become possessed by trying to do that. And then there’s an element of time [travel] and they have to go back and – anyway.”

Unfortunately, there isn’t a whole lot of new information here. Basically, we now know that Bill & Ted 3’s plot will involve time travel – hopefully of the phone booth variety – and an aging Bill and Ted on a quest to live up to their prophesied, and world-peace inducing, musical compositions.

I assume there’s more to it than that, but just as important as the forthcoming screenplay, are A) who will direct it (it’s unlikely that Scorsese, Coppola, or Herzog would be interested but maybe Bill and Ted alum, Stephen Herek, could return) and B) who will replace the late great George Carlin as Bill and Ted’s mentor and guide.

What are your feelings on a Bill & Ted 3 film? Is this something you’re excited about, or do you think it’ll be just another in a long string of too late sequels that will likely underwhelm or worse?

Keanu Reeves’ latest film, Henry’s Crime – also starring Vera Farmiga – hits theaters April 8th, 2011. For more information about Bill & Ted 3, keep an eye on the main page.

  1. This is a bad idea, I recently watched bogus adventure, with some friends and the younger people had no idead who Bill and Ted was. I think their time has passed

  2. LOL! All I can say is “Whoa”.

  3. Thier time has passed, but I’d see a third outing. Maybe they can somehow bring Bill Sadler back as Death again lol.

  4. too outdated.

  5. why did he sound kinda english???? looool

  6. If they pretend the second one never happened, then this could be great. Time travel could easily wipe out the second one’s bad taste, so there’s great potential here.

I vote for Ted Nugent to play their new music/history mentor.

  7. My kids who range in age from 15-10 love the Bill and Ted movies! Saying the movies or the idea is outdated doesn’t fly with me. I feel it’s more kids today haven’t been exposed to these movies. Heck, the Star Wars Trilogy is outdated if no one ever took the time to show it to you!

  8. Honestly…
It was good when we were kids, but…
Something that is so hyper-edgy and super-trendy quickly fades…
    And bringing it back…
I’m going to have a lot of ‘splaining to do as it is when my kids one day get into a laugh-fest when they run across the first two online with their friends.
Bill and Ted was just too invested in one microdemographic. I think there was a microscopic window in history where the films actually worked. I think Keanu would actually have to HAVE a time-traveling phone booth in order to successfully market another installment.

  9. Could Edward Van Halen be the mentor? If not, could it be Dennis Leary?

    • Dennis Leary would be a great choice.

  10. Reeves simply doesnt need to go back to that format, he is way beyond that movie and the acting involved. He isnt 19 and the times have changed, now if they made the movie with new actors they could reinvent the first movie and make it better but I dont see the potential here.

    • I was going to post the same thing. Bill and Ted was one of those low budget films an actor has to make to get into more serious and better roles. So returning to it is a mistake and a LOT of steps backwards.

And yeah, the only way to go would be to do a reboot but I am not going to endorse the “R” word anymore for anything……..ever.

      • Lol Reeves sure has gone way past that stage in his career with great films like The Matrix and…
        and… umm… Well he’ll always have that one :P

        • oh come on…..I actually liked Constantine a whole lot. After that though, yeah I got nothing. I did also like Johnny Mnemonic, The Devils Advocate, Chain Reaction and Speed but those are all pre Matrix. :/

He definitely needs to re-energize his career but this is NOT the way to go imho. Guess we will see if 47 Ronin helps him.

  11. This idea is not excellent and is most bogus.

  12. Bogus. Heinous. Most non-triumphant. Not that I wouldn’t watch it though.

  13. No way…..NO WAY!!! YES WAY TED!!!!!!!!!

  14. If it does actually happen, this movie couldn’t be no more stupid than any others as of late.

  15. Something strange is afoot at the Circle K. My most favorite line from a movie EVAH!

  16. YES!!!!!! It’d be kind of weird to see an old bill and Ted but I would love to see another one if its done right.

    Most Excellent!! :D

  17. Duuuuuude! I LOVE it! I love Keanu Reeves, and he’s been a great actor, but I miss his comical days – everything he does now is so somber and serious. I want to see him smiling more! I think if nothing else, this is another one of those flashback movie ideas that brings us 40 somethings back to our younger days and makes us feel good. I really hope it’s good, and I’m looking forward to it. WILD STALLIONZ!!! (Insert air guitar here.) :)

  18. OH, um, bogus….I mean Wyld Stallyns! Party on dudes!

  19. I have always imagine a title for a third one.
    Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
    Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey
    ….wait for it….
    Bill & Ted’s Gnarly Expedition

  20. I have to agree with others that Bill & Ted is a little too dated to bring back now. And if they do bring it ‘up to date’ it just won’t seem the same as the previous two films. I imagine it’s going to be another film where Hollywood is taking a stab in the dark to try and make top box office money. If this film ever comes out it’ll probably end up falling flat at the theaters.

  21. Yes, please! All you haters will watch it. You know you will.

    • I am skeptical it will be live up to the two originals. But yes, you are right. I know I will most likely see it. Willingly. Though, I might add, I might wait for the dvd instead of going to the theater.

  22. Count me as crazy too Ben. I am ecstatic over this new news. B&TEA is one of my top 5 films from my childhood and one that still, surprisingly, holds up today. I love Alex Winter, after Lost Boys and EA I thought he was gonna be huge, but… Also this gives me new hope for Goonies, Gremlins and Ghostbusters

  23. They can figure out a way to bring back a computer generated version of George Carlin from the previous movies since they managed to bring back a young looking Geoff Bridges as CLU in Tron Legacy. I do have to say I am also very excited that they are going forward with a Bill and Ted 3 movie:D

  24. I am really looking forward to this. i still have the Bill & Ted movies on betamax tapes. I watch em at least once every other year.

  25. This is gonna be awesome. Finally Hollywood is putting out a great movie unliek some of the garbage they have been putting out lately. Hello this is Deputy Van Halen…CLASSIC.
