Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was an amazing discovery as a kindergartner, primarily due to how infantile, crude, and hilarious Bill S. Preston Esquire and Ted “Theodore” Logan were – as played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves.
So call me crazy, but I’ll be very happy if Bill & Ted 3 ever becomes a reality. Late last year, Reeves expressed massive enthusiasm for a second sequel, going so far as to pitch ideas involving a black and white aesthetic and directors like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Werner Herzog. Now, he says a draft of the script is just six weeks away from being finished.
According to Keanu Reeves, who talked to MTV:
“I believe [Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, the original writers of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure] are six weeks away from a draft – no pressure guys.”
When asked about the story for Bill & Ted 3, Reeves was initially tight-lipped:
“I know a little bit [about the story]. But I don’t [really] know. The fellows went off and cooked it up. I don’t know what happened when they went off and put the elements together.”
Then, after being pushed for more details, Reeves said:
“When we last got together [in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey], Bill and Ted were supposed to have written this song that saved the world – and it hasn’t happened. And so they’ve kind of now become possessed by trying to do that. And then there’s an element of time [travel] and they have to go back and – anyway.”

Unfortunately, there isn’t a whole lot of new information here. Basically, we now know that Bill & Ted 3’s plot will involve time travel – hopefully of the phone booth variety – and an aging Bill and Ted on a quest to live up to their prophesied, and world-peace inducing, musical compositions.
I assume there’s more to it than that, but just as important as the forthcoming screenplay, are A) who will direct it (it’s unlikely that Scorsese, Coppola, or Herzog would be interested but maybe Bill and Ted alum, Stephen Herek, could return) and B) who will replace the late great George Carlin as Bill and Ted’s mentor and guide.
What are your feelings on a Bill & Ted 3 film? Is this something you’re excited about, or do you think it’ll be just another in a long string of too late sequels that will likely underwhelm or worse?
Keanu Reeves’ latest film, Henry’s Crime – also starring Vera Farmiga – hits theaters April 8th, 2011. For more information about Bill & Ted 3, keep an eye on the main page.
